Presented by the Rotary Club of Gold Coast, the Botanical Bazaar has earned a loyal following among gardeners, community groups, retirees and those seeking practical inspiration for healthier, more sustainable living. This year the event will be held as one vibrant day from 9am to 4pm, bringing together expert speakers, specialist growers, gardening clubs, community organisations, artisans and entertainers in a relaxed country setting. Rotary Club of Gold Coast organiser David Baguley said the event offers far more than just plants. “People come to Botanical Bazaar to learn, connect and be inspired. Whether you’re an experienced gardener, just starting out, or simply enjoy spending time in beautiful surroundings with likeminded people, there is something here for everyone. Many visitors tell us they leave with new ideas, new friendships and renewed enthusiasm for their gardens and their communities,” said David Grow, Learn and Thrive at Rotary Botanical Bazaar 2026 A rewarding day out for gardeners, plant lovers and lifelong learners -Saturday 1st August - continued page 2 >
2 Antique Buyers in the Area In most Australian homes, there's a drawer. You know the one. It holds the tangle of old jewellery nobody wears anymore — the broken chain from an aunt's estate, the ring that no longer fits, the earring whose partner disappeared a decade ago. It holds the coins collected on overseas trips, the broken old watch, the bracelet bought in a different chapter of life. Most of us assume these things have sentimental value, or no value at all. What we rarely consider is that they might have real, financial value — sitting quietly while the gold price holds near historic highs. That's where father-son buying duo Mike and Nate come in. Mike and Nate are enthusiastic antique buyers with a particular eye for gold jewellery — broken or intact — gold and silver coins, mechanical watches, military medals, banknotes, and all other kinds of coins. "Everyone has something we want to buy," says Mike, "and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item as we are buying ten thousand." With gold still trading well above traditional levels, now is an opportune time to dig out those old chains, rings, and brooches and find out what they're actually worth. "This is an ideal time to sell," Mike emphasises. "We will buy anything made of gold — old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth. We also need silver in any form, including coins and bars of any size." Don't overlook the coins. That old tin of foreign currency at the back of the cupboard could contain a rarity worth far more than face value. "We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations — bags, tins, folders, however they come," says Mike. "We'll go through them on the spot and give you a fair idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up." Mechanical watches are also in urgent demand. Brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Longines, and even some Gents Seiko’s can command strong prices depending on model and condition — and many people have no idea what a vintage watch sitting in a drawer is currently worth to a serious collector. In today's era of downsizing and decluttering, there has rarely been a better moment to open those drawers, go through those cupboards, and turn forgotten items into real money. Mike and Nate will be in the Gold Coast area during July, doing home visits. Call today to book yours. For more details see page 3 or www. heritageint.nz Gardening for Health and Wellbeing Research continues to highlight the physical, mental and social benefits of gardening, from reducing stress and increasing physical activity to improving wellbeing and creating meaningful social connections. The Botanical Bazaar embraces these benefits by providing visitors with opportunities to learn new skills, discover fresh ideas and connect with others who share a love of gardening and nature. This year’s theme, Garden to Plate, reflects growing interest in producing fresh food at home and understanding where our food comes from. Facilitated by Legendary International Michelin Star Chef Bruno Loubet, Garden to Plate invites visitors to explore plant-based cooking, seasonal produce, native flavours, and sustainable food ideas through a day of live demonstrations and fresh inspiration. Guided by Bruno and special guest presenters, this is a hands-on culinary journey from soil to supper. Learn from Gardening Experts One of the major attractions of the Botanical Bazaar is its extensive education program. Award-winning gardening presenter and Organic Gardening Magazine editor Chloe Thomson will join Brisbane horticulturist Kat Pearson and a range of gardening and sustainability experts to share practical advice throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy presentations, demonstrations and workshops from respected gardening educators, horticultural experts and sustainability advocates, introducing awardwinning gardening presenter Chloe Thomson and Brisbane horticulturist Kat Pearson, as well as regulars Phil Dudman, Morag Gamble, Claire Bickle and Jordan Alexander. Topics will cover everything from edible gardening and soil health to sustainable gardening practices, pollinator-friendly gardens, composting, herbs, indoor plants and growing food in small spaces. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions, gather expert advice and take home practical ideas that can be applied immediately. A Plant Lover’s Paradise With more than 90 exhibitors expected to attend, Botanical Bazaar offers one of the largest collections of plants and gardening products available on the Gold Coast. Specialist nurseries, growers and horticultural suppliers will showcase a diverse range of plants, including natives, ornamentals, fruit trees, indoor plants and rare varieties. Visitors can also browse garden décor, tools, sustainable gardening products, botanical art and handcrafted items while speaking directly with growers and experts. “One of the things that makes Botanical Bazaar special is knowing that your visit helps support local causes while enjoying a wonderful day out,” Mr Baguley said. Queenslanders can take a number of steps to prepare their homes and families, including checking appliances such as heaters or electric blankets before use. The most important step is ensuring compliance with smoke alarm legislation that comes into effect from January 1, 2027. From the start of winter, people across the state will have six months to ensure their smoke alarms are interconnected and powered by a non-removable battery or hardwired into their home’s power supply. When alarms are interconnected, if one goes off, they all go off. This alerts everyone in the home at the same time. This gives anyone inside the home the best chance of getting out if a fire starts, especially if they have also practiced their home fire escape plan. Queensland Fire Department Commissioner Steve Smith said compliant smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan were essential to reduce the risk of tragedy in the event of a fire in the home. "Every winter, Queensland Fire and Rescue firefighters respond to a higher number of home fires than at other times of the year," Commissioner Smith said. "It's important that you have compliant smoke alarms, and that you know what to do if a fire starts. "Smoke and fire can spread through the home extremely quickly. A smoke alarm will alert you, but you will need to know how to get out fast to survive." In 2025 alone, Queensland firefighters responded to 480 fires inside homes across winter. Commissioner Smith said appliances such as heaters and electric blankets could be a common way for fires to start. "At the start of winter people may start using appliances like heaters that have been stored during the warmer months. Before you start using them, it is important to check them over and make sure they are still in working order," he said Visit the QFD website www.fire.qld.gov.au to make a home fire escape plan or for more information.
5 Common Denture Problems A common problem among denture wearers is ill-fitting dentures, which cause pain. Pain is directly related to the way dentures fit. When a denture rests snuggly against the gums and doesn’t slide around, then pain shouldn’t be an issue. But when dentures begin to rub against the gums, it leads to soreness and swelling. Left untreated, this can make wearing dentures intolerable. If dentures don’t fit well and you experience pain, you are likely to eat less or eat softer foods. Not eating foods that you used to enjoy is another sign of unstable or uncomfortable dentures. Poor diet and lower nutritional intake could lead to a variety of health and digestive problems. Furthermore, ill-fitting dentures constantly rub on the gums and can create a callus, called an Epulis, which may require oral surgery to remove. Natural changes in the gums and jaw over time can be another factor that causes denture pain. Gums change, and over time bone underneath the gum can shrink. The change is progressive, so you may not notice it, and over time your dentures no longer fit properly. Fixing Denture Discomfort No matter what the cause, a dental health professional can fix ill fitting dentures. Three techniques are typically used: a simple denture adjustment can sometimes fix the problem however. Relining the denture will seat the denture closely to the shape of the gums therefore stabilizing the denture giving more comfort. Depending on the individual you should have your dentures relined every two to three years to compensate for the constant change in your jaw bone. Depending on the way you use your denture, for instance you could have a very hard bite or you could be grinding your teeth in your sleep or similar, your denture should last you from five to eight years. If your denture is worse for wear then a new denture is the solution. Remember wearing the same denture past its due by date is doing you no favours, it will certainly cause problems to your gums and your jawbone later on making it more difficult to get a proper fitting denture as you age. Colder weather, shorter days and lower energy often mean cooking becomes less appealing, especially when you’re living independently. The good news is you don’t need to spend hours in the kitchen to eat well. Having simple, nourishing meal options on hand can help you stay healthy, enjoy comforting winter favourites and maintain your independence at home. During winter, good nutrition is especially important. Regular, balanced meals support energy levels, immune health and overall wellbeing, but preparing them from scratch isn’t always practical. That’s where convenient solutions, like prepared meals, can make a real difference. Keeping a selection of ready-made meals in the freezer can reduce the effort of shopping and cooking, while providing peace of mind that a healthy option is always available. It also helps improve safety by limiting time spent using stovetops and heavy cookware. Warm, hearty meals like soups, casseroles and slow-cooked dishes remain popular for good reason, they’re comforting, satisfying and can be nutritionally balanced when they include protein and vegetables. For many older Australians, ready-made meals offer a flexible way to stay independent. On days when cooking feels manageable, you can still enjoy preparing your own meals. On busier or lower-energy days, you have a convenient option ready to go. A Simple Solution with Gourmet Meals Gourmet Meals has been supporting Australians for over 30 years with chef-prepared, dietitian-reviewed meals designed to make everyday life easier. 8 Gold Coasters and visitors to the city will be able to view Botanical Art at the Royal Queensland Art Society of Queensland Gallery, 25 Broadbeach Blvd, Broadbeach from the 5th July to 31st July. The exhibition is jointly presented by The Botanical Art Society of Australia (BASA), Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens (FGCRBG) and Native Plants Queensland (NPQ). Showcasing 71 paintings and some graphite pencil works from botanical artists across Australia, the works include three categories – Eucalypts, Native Plants and Non-Native Plants and will be judged on 4th July. Everyone is welcome – entry is free. It is also an opportunity to purchase the works exhibited Some of the works on show may include all relevant parts of the plants, providing a scientific record that enables detailed identification. Others may represent parts of a plant, a flower, foliage or perhaps a fruit, but must also be botanically correct. The work can be painstaking, as in this Giant Spear Lily Doryanthes palmeri by Mali Moir in 2005, from a specimen growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. 9 Looking After Your Eyes in an Outdoor Paradise One of the many joys of living on the Gold Coast is the lifestyle. Whether it's an early morning walk along the beach, a round of golf with friends, fishing on the Broadwater, cheering on the grandchildren at weekend sport or simply enjoying a coffee in the sunshine, our days are often spent outdoors. But while most of us remember to slip on sunscreen and wear a hat, protecting our eyes is something that can easily be overlooked. Australia has one of the highest levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the world, and long-term exposure can contribute to a range of eye conditions, including cataracts and damage to the surface of the eye. Wearing quality sunglasses that provide adequate UV protection is one of the simplest ways to help safeguard your vision while still enjoying everything our beautiful region has to offer. Regular eye examinations are equally important. Many common eye conditions develop gradually and without obvious symptoms. In fact, changes in vision can occur so slowly that people often don't realise there's a problem until it begins affecting everyday activities such as reading, driving at night or recognising faces from a distance. An eye test does much more than determine whether you need glasses. Eye health professionals can detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, often before you PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au notice any changes yourself. Early detection can make a significant difference in managing these conditions and preserving vision. Our reliance on screens is another modern challenge. From smartphones and tablets to computers and televisions, many of us spend hours each day focusing on digital devices. If your eyes feel tired, dry or strained, try following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It gives your eyes a chance to reset. Good vision plays a vital role in maintaining independence, confidence and quality of life. It allows us to enjoy the simple pleasures that make the Gold Coast such a wonderful place to call home. So, as you head out to enjoy another sunny day, remember to take care of your eyes. After all, life is best experienced when you can see it clearly. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for 25 years. 10 How Support at Home helps both seniors and their families Looking after an older person you care about might bring meaning to your days – yet it can drain your body, heart, and mind. Juggling jobs, kids, private duties, while meeting a parent’s rising needs tests nearly everyone. Help within the home isn’t just for elders – it eases pressure across every member of the household. How Home Support at Home Helps Families Stay Strong Staying put as you get older? That’s what lots of Aussies want. It feels right being where things are known, where life has settled. One thing people don’t always mention – family members often find relief when help arrives. Care that comes to the house does more than assist one person. Relief spreads. When support walks through the door, it doesn’t just serve tasks. Families feel less strain when skilled helpers handle everyday duties. Because someone else steps in, loved ones can stop being on duty all the time. Suddenly, they’re back to simply being a sister, brother, spouse, or companion. Things settle into place more naturally then. Less stress for family caregivers Carers in families often start without training, pulled into the role by affection or obligation. Slowly, exhaustion creeps in, then frustration, then deeper weariness. Finding help where you need it can ease tough days. When trained support steps in, even just weekly for a short while, things often get better without drama. Family members who give care might finally find moments to breathe, tend to their jobs, or sit quietly with a cup of tea. Enhancing How People Exchange Ideas and Grasp Each Other Most of the time, those who care for older adults at home build real trust with both the person they support and their relatives. Noticing small shifts each day – then passing along clear reports keeps loved ones aware without guesswork. Decisions feel steadier when someone reliable is watching closely. Families get included right away when plans take shape around the individual. Talking clearly sets the pace, while teamwork guides each step forward. Worries find a response before they grow, simply because attention stays focused where it belongs – on the person being cared for. Supporting families with work life balance Life today moves fast. Juggling work, kids, time for aging parents – soon the weight piles up. When home care assistance visits follow a set routine, life feels steadier for relatives. A trusted helper checking in means family can pay attention elsewhere, knowing things are covered. Relief comes quietly when someone reliable shows up each week. Emotional wellbeing support for all Worries creep in when a family member grows older. Sadness shows up too. Frustration might follow close behind. Guilt can appear without warning. Help arrives through consistent home care. Shared responsibility makes things lighter. The weight feels less each day. Older adults feel better inside when things at home settle down. A quieter house often comes from less pressure on relatives. With people knowing they’re not alone, bonds grow stronger. Moods lift all around simply because care is shared. When someone recovers from sickness, help can start right away. As things shift, so does the kind of support at home offered. For those needing daily guidance, aid stays steady but adapts quietly. If dementia enters the picture, trained care steps in without delay. Needs change – services move alongside them. Families begin to trust the process instead of bracing for crisis. Building Trust and Meaningful Connections A good match slips easily into daily life, almost like kin. What matters most is a real connection between caregiver and senior. Matching goes beyond training – it includes how people think, feel, lives fit together. Comfort grows when personalities align, not just qualifications. Families notice the difference when care feels natural. Stability comes from shared rhythm, mutual respect. Trust builds slowly, quietly, without force. Taking the First Step Towards Support at Home Picture life a little easier when days feel overwhelming. What if support at home came right to your door, quietly helping out? Someone shows up who gets it – the small things that make each day matter. Confidence grows when you are not alone in managing changes. Care feels natural, never forced, simply there when needed. A DANCE Last night I was chillin’ on the couch watching TV when I heard my wife call from the kitchen: “What do you want for dinner, my love - chicken, beef, or lamb?” I smiled and said, “Chicken, please, my love.” She yelled back…“Not you, Mister! You’re having Weight-Watchers soup. I was talking to the cat!” H H H H H H H H A nun wakes up and starts walking through the convent. The first nun she meets says, “You got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.” She shakes it off and keeps walking. Then the second nun says the same thing — “You got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.” Now she’s a bit annoyed... but keeps walking. She hears the same comment from three more nuns. Now she’s fuming! She storms straight to the Mother Superior’s office. Before the Mother Superior can say a word, the nun snaps: “DON’T TELL ME I GOT OUT OF THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED THIS MORNING!” The Mother Superior calmly replies, “I wasn’t going to say that at all. I was just going to ask...why are you wearing the Bishop’s slippers?” H H H H H H H H A couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary at the quiet little restaurant where they had their very first date, when a beautiful fairy appeared. She said, “As you’ve been such a faithful and loving couple - I’ll grant you each of you one wish!” The wife took her husband’s hand, smiled into his eyes and said lovingly: “I’d love to travel around the world with my darling husband.” The fairy waved her wand and Poof! Two first-class tickets for a luxury world cruise appeared. Next it was the husband’s turn. He thought long and hard and eventually took hold of his wife’s hand looked into her eyes and said: “Well… as this is once in a lifetime and although still very beautiful... I’m sorry to say , my love, but my wish is to have a wife who is 30 years younger than me.” The fairy frowned at him, ‘Are you sure?’ “Yep,” I’m sure the husband said. “ Okay, a wish is a wish,” said the fairy and she waved her wand... Poof! Suddenly the husband was 92 years old!
13 Tinnitus — is it really true that nothing can be done? If that sounds familiar, you’re far from alone. Tinnitus — ringing, buzzing or hissing with no outside source — is more common than people realise, especially as we get older. And while there’s no magic switch to turn it off, the old idea that “nothing can be done” is well out of date. Here’s what most people are never told: tinnitus usually isn’t a problem in the ears at all. It’s the brain paying too much attention to a signal it should be filtering out. A little like blood pressure — you may not make the number vanish, but you can manage it so it stops running your life. When we’re stressed, tired or sitting in silence, the brain turns the volume up; with the right understanding, it can learn to let the sound fade into the background — the way you stop noticing a clock ticking in a room you’ve been sitting in for a while. So where do you start? With a proper tinnitus assessment — understanding your tinnitus, checking your hearing, and ruling out anything that needs attention. You leave with a clear explanation and some practical first tools, not just a label. From there we build a plan around you. Depending on what we find, that might include gentle “sound enrichment” to give the brain something else to settle on; treating any underlying hearing loss, which often takes the heat out of tinnitus; simple retraining, breathing and sleep strategies for the harder nights; and, where it helps, the right hearing support. Real change usually takes a few months, so we track your progress and you can see it improving, not just hope it is. One caution: be wary of anyone promising a “cure,” or reaching for the same device for everyone. Because we’re independent — not tied to any one manufacturer — we start with you and your hearing, not a product on a shelf. If tinnitus is wearing down your sleep, focus or peace of mind, don’t resign yourself to it. The first step is a tinnitus assessment — and you don’t have to take it on your own. She was only 50 when the ringing started. Within months it was the first thing she heard each morning and the last thing at night. She’d been told to simply live with it — and by the time she came to see us, what frightened her most was the thought that it might never stop.

H H H H H H H H When people asked a 100-year-old man his secret to good health and longevity was. The old man said: “I’ll let you into a secret. I’ve been married for 75 years. When we got married, I promised my wife that whenever we quarrelled, the loser would have to walk 5 kilometres. So, I’ve been walking 5 kilometres every day for 75 years!” Someone then asked, “But how is your wife still so healthy too?” The old man replied: “You wanna know the truth… she’s been following me to make sure I really finish the 5 kilometres!”
