23 The literal road-testing of new entertainment concepts by the Robertson Brothers over the last few years led to one of the most spectacular aural and optical smorgasbord on offer. Already a hard-working family organisation, one of their many versions of “The Robertson Brothers 1960’s Variety TV Show” featured the inclusion of - and I’ll say it right here – Australia’s premiere Roy Orbison tribute artist - Dean Bourne. He’s overburdened in the “Talent Department” to the point of suggesting that perhaps some serious time-travel may have occurred on RPAC’s stage. His register, pitch control, vocal growl, original key register and guitar craft points to professionally honed perfection over years. Senior fans will remember the Roy’s early hits; younger fans relish the later 80’s tracks. And the iconic looks? It happened in 1963, when on tour with John, Paul, George and Ringo. Roy left his regular glasses on the plane and had to perform in his prescription Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunnies. The moody blue look clicked big time then, just as it did with Dean Bourne today. Geoff and Ben Robertson, as seasoned entertainers, easily doubled the impact of the show delivering a wide variety of Everly Brothers songs complete in their 60’s business suits. Both went on to triple the effect by providing the backing and vocals to Dean as Roy Obison. The Robertson Brothers harmonized by blending Music Review Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson (no relation) www.101fm.com.au | Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography) their voices using complementary notes (like thirds and sixths) instead of just a single melody. It’s truly a “close your eyes and reimagine” type of experience. Along with Dean, Ben and Geoff showcased their uniquely cool cohesive cocktail of hits. Famed Australian session guitarist Dieter Kleeman also provided stunning riffs and licks filling the sound to maximum enjoyment. And the amazing optics? Nothing short of an awesome, full backscreen of moving AI graphics, the like that has never been seen in this pop environment. This is seriously an epic entertainment production. Book yourself a seat! Everly Brothers & Friends and Roy Orbison In 1956, two of the most influential acts of the 1950s and ’60s — The Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison — stepped into the recording studio for the very first time. Australia’s #1 vocal duo, the much-loved Robertson Brothers, join forces with the internationally acclaimed Dean Bourne — the world’s greatest Roy Orbison tribute artist — and the Variety Show team for an unforgettable 2-hour audio-visual spectacular.
