Queenslanders can take a number of steps to prepare their homes and families, including checking appliances such as heaters or electric blankets before use. The most important step is ensuring compliance with smoke alarm legislation that comes into effect from January 1, 2027. From the start of winter, people across the state will have six months to ensure their smoke alarms are interconnected and powered by a non-removable battery or hardwired into their home’s power supply. When alarms are interconnected, if one goes off, they all go off. This alerts everyone in the home at the same time. This gives anyone inside the home the best chance of getting out if a fire starts, especially if they have also practiced their home fire escape plan. Queensland Fire Department Commissioner Steve Smith said compliant smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan were essential to reduce the risk of tragedy in the event of a fire in the home. "Every winter, Queensland Fire and Rescue firefighters respond to a higher number of home fires than at other times of the year," Commissioner Smith said. "It's important that you have compliant smoke alarms, and that you know what to do if a fire starts. "Smoke and fire can spread through the home extremely quickly. A smoke alarm will alert you, but you will need to know how to get out fast to survive." In 2025 alone, Queensland firefighters responded to 480 fires inside homes across winter. Commissioner Smith said appliances such as heaters and electric blankets could be a common way for fires to start. "At the start of winter people may start using appliances like heaters that have been stored during the warmer months. Before you start using them, it is important to check them over and make sure they are still in working order," he said Visit the QFD website www.fire.qld.gov.au to make a home fire escape plan or for more information.
