4 Why is this study being conducted? Gout is caused by a high level of uric acid in the blood, which builds up over time. Uric acid is produced when the body digests foods that contain a high level of a chemical called purine; purines can be found in certain types of meat, seafood, and alcohol. Normally, this uric acid is then passed through the urine. However, in people with gout, uric acid is not eliminated correctly and builds up in joints, causing very small crystals of uric acid to form; these are called urate crystals. When urate crystals dissolve, this can trigger a painful gout flare-up. Many of the current approved treatments for gout are called urate-lowering therapies (ULTs). These are designed to lower the uric acid levels in blood. However, due to how these treatments work in the body, they can disturb the urate crystals in joints, leading to a gout flare-up. Who is eligible to participate in this study? You may be able to take part in the Gout Clinical Trial if you: • Are aged between 18 and 85 years • Have high uric acid levels in blood • Have gout or a history of gout Additional eligibility criteria may apply and will be discussed directly with the Clinical Trial Coordinator. What happens during the study? The study will last up to 14 months. During the study, you will be required to: • Attend regular up to 17 study centre visits for health checks • Take your assigned study drug daily and receive additional medications to prevent gout flare-ups • Fill out an electronic diary each day to record any gout flareups Participation in this study is completely voluntary, and participants can decide to withdraw at any time. Eligible participants will be reimbursed for travel, parking, meals and other expenses associated with each study visit. 6 7 YEAR WARRANTY Save money, time & hassle with our simple tile injection method Ripping up and re-laying tiles is messy, invasive & expensive Ready to walk on in 3-4 hours DO YOU HAVE LOOSE, TENTED OR CRACKED TILES? We Can Fix That! CALL US FOR MORE INFO & A FREE QUOTE 0407 898 795 It’s a happy new year for older Australians who want to work and not lose their pension. Here’s why. National Seniors Australia has been a long-time champion for reforms to allow pensioners to earn more income without losing their payment. That’s why this new year we’re celebrating the fact that new working pensioners are up to $2,000 better off because of National Seniors’ efforts to reform pension working rules. of the $300 fortnightly Work Bonus accrued in a Work Bonus income bank. The $4,000 is a one off addition to the Work Bonus for new pensioners and is on top of the $7,800 you can earn without impacting your pension. The additional $4,000 is applied at the start of the year to the Work Bonus income bank of new pensioners. Disappointedly, if you already received the $4,000 Work Bonus in 2023 you will not receive this again up front. However, your Work Bonus can accrue to a maximum of $11,800 because it carries forward over years. It does mean that those becoming eligible for the pension can work a little bit more without losing their pension but those with ongoing work will not unless they have periods out of the workforce and accrue beyond the old $7,800 limit. The decision to make the temporary increase in the Work Bonus permanent from 1 January 2024 means a new pensioner can earn $453 per fortnight (on average) in the first year of receiving their pension and not affect their pension. That might mean you can work an extra shift. It’s important to also note that the Work Bonus operates in addition to the pension income free area, which is currently $204 a fortnight for single pensioners and $360 a fortnight for couples combined. If you don’t have any investment income or savings, this would mean a new pensioner could earn even more each fortnight without losing your pension (all told, up to a total of $657 per fortnight for a single pensioner). For more information about the Work Bonus, Services Australia can be contacted by visiting a Centrelink office in person, by phoning 13 23 00 or at Services Australia. Work Bonus win means more income! On 1 January, all new pensioners will have $4,000 added to their Work Bonus balance. It’s a victory for older Australians and for National Seniors in our ongoing campaign to remove barriers to Australians who want to work in later life. How the new system operates is complicated, but the good news is you do not need to apply separately for any part of the Work Bonus. As with other Age Pension obligations, you just need to declare your income. How it works Here are some examples of the application of the Work Bonus. Under existing rules, the first $300 of fortnightly income from work is not counted under the pension income test, with any unused part source: nationalseniors.com.au

8 Research shows that 80% of older Australians prefer to age in the comfort of their own home rather than an aged care facility. We all want what is best for our ageing loved ones, and to respect their preferences, and at Home Care Assistance Gold Coast we exist to help make this preference a reality. The idea of having Care Workers in the home for some people might impact their feelings of independence, making it more challenging as they are resistant to the idea. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, we understand this challenge, and can provide you with strategies to address the underlying concerns or fears and therefore help make the transition to receiving support easier for everyone. When is the right time for home care? It is not often easy to determine exactly when your loved one requires additional support to live well at home. There are times when it can be more apparent, for example following an accident or injury, or on return home from hospital, but at other times the indicators may not be as obvious. Things like changes in eating habits, signs of memory loss, changes to energy levels or difficulty taking part in day-to-day activities can all be signs that extra assistance could be of value. Home care funding options Care for your loved ones in the home can simply be paid for outright, but there are also full or partial funding options accessible through the government such as Home Care Packages, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Carer Gateway respite. We can support you in your exploration of these options. Paying Privately The simplest method, and a good option when urgent care is required, is simply to pay privately in full. This timely option is also great when the care need is short term, or you simply wish to keep things simple and straight forward, without involving applications and processes for seeking funding support. Should this be your preference, we offer Respecting our ageing loved ones competitive hourly rates for home care services. Home Care Packages Home Care Packages are government funded subsidies for individualised home care services. As they are personalised to everyone, they can cover everything from gardening and cooking support to more complex services requiring a co-ordinated approach such as personal care or wound care. For those on an aged pension, these packages can be fully subsidised, so there is no out of pocket cost. Let us help you Home Care Assistance Gold Coast can help. CALL SOMEONE WHO CARES! Custom made aesthetically designed natural looking dentures that you can wear with a confident smile. DENTURES DIRECT TO PUBLIC Registered with the Dental Board of Australia & Australian Dental Prosthetist Assoc. Ltd Which denture is the right choice for me? A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two types of dentures are available, complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Complete Dentures Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate." Made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made. Partial Dentures A removable partial denture or bridge usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. A fixed bridge replaces one or more teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the space and attaching artificial teeth to them. This "bridge" is then cemented into place. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position. A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns. This is a more natural-looking appliance. Are There Alternatives to Dentures? Yes, dental implants can be used to support cemented bridges, eliminating the need for a denture. The cost is usually greater, but the implants and bridges more closely resemble the feel of real teeth. Dental implants are becoming the alternative to dentures but not everyone is a candidate for implants. Consult your dentist for advice. Now is a fantastic opportunity to turn those unwanted items into cash. “We are keen buyers, especially of the items listed on our advert (see back page). Everyone has something we want to buy, and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item, as we are buying 10,000!”, says Mike Cornish, chief buyer for the company. The buyers will be in a convenient location in the area very soon (see back page). If you are in doubt about any items you wish to sell, take them in for an instant appraisal. Especially wanted by the buyers are any gold jewellery items, broken or not, antique jewellery, collectables such as military medals, old coins and banknotes, and mechanical watches. Gold and Silver still at high prices With the gold price still at higher than traditional levels, right now would be an opportune time to go through the jewellery box and dig out those old gold chains, rings and brooches and turn them into cash. Mike says, “Now is a great time to sell. We will buy anything made of gold – old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth! We also need silver in any form, including cups, cutlery, old coins, even teapots and the like.” Old coins can toss up a rarity Check those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations. We will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up!” Rolex and mechanical watches wanted Mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer, and Longines, just to mention some. These brands can command good prices depending on the condition and model. In any event we will buy any mechanical watch, even if it’s only a few dollars for parts,” says Mike. “If you are unsure, bring any watches to us at the venues to have them appraised,” he said. Whilst we have a Covid safe environment at the venues, we also offer home visits for those unable to come to us. See our advert for home visit slots and get in touch to book yours in. ROM (Read Only Memory) and DVD R/W (Read & Write). (Blank Disc and Recorded on a Computer DVD Burner). “Burning” of your data, photos or video to a DVD is a safe, cheap and reliable storage medium. DVD Drives are available in various speeds. The original hardware speed was 2 x. Recording speed progressively increased over the years to 60x. Nearly all laptop computers have a 24 x DVD R/W (Reading & Writing) speed. Care must be taken if recording a DVD at a faster speed, as the slower DVD player may not recognise the disc. We recommend to record (burn) all DVDs at 8 x or 16 x, thus allowing compatibility with both a laptop and a desktop computer. Please call Mark on (07) 5537 8382 if unsure. Generally the software included with the DVD drive, such as Nero Express, is excellent, and will allow you to copy and produce most common disc types. Playing a modern DVD movie or music CD on very old equipment with limited RAM and Processor speed, may result in poor quality and interruptions. This is called “buffer underrun”. When choosing a CD or DVD, select by laser image. Turn the disc upside down, and then turn it into the light. A laser rainbow image will appear. The sharper the laser image, the higher the quality of the CD or DVD disc. 15 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In our fast-paced lives, filled with digital screens and constant visual stimuli, it’s easy to overlook the significance of maintaining good eye health. However, regular checkups with an optometrist are not just a precautionary measure; they are essential for preserving the precious gift of sight and overall well-being. One of the primary reasons to prioritise optometric check-ups is the early detection of potential issues. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. An optometrist can detect these conditions through comprehensive eye exams, allowing for early intervention and effective management. Timely diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to the eyes and, in some cases, even save one’s vision. Moreover, optometrists are equipped with the expertise to address refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While it might be tempting to rely on over-the-counter reading glasses or online prescriptions, these solutions may not adequately address the unique visual needs of each individual. Optometrists tailor prescriptions based on a thorough understanding of the patient’s eye health, ensuring optimal vision correction. Regular eye check-ups are particularly crucial for children, as undetected vision problems can hinder their learning and development. Children may not always express vision concerns or even recognise them, making routine optometric visits essential for identifying and addressing potential issues early on. Good vision is integral to a child’s academic success and overall well-being. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. 16 0417 294 778 A Touch of Grass Garden Care GARDEN CLEANUPS / REJUVENATION & MAKEOVERS A SPECIALTY We offer an experienced, professional and reliable service Call Jeremy on ... Est. Gold Coast since 2001 Let us create your new and rejuvenated garden where you can sit back, relax and enjoy your tranquil surroundings ... Specialising Garden Makeovers & Rejuvenation * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping As well as the destruction and damage of homes and businesses, the last weeks of tremendous storms have also devastated areas of natural vegetation. Everyone in horticulture, conservation and the garden media recognise the challenges ahead in gardens and natural areas, and many are involved in clean-ups and providing support for some of those affected. The heat and humidity have been intense. Even the smallest of gardens can help reduce the effects of the sun! On the hottest of days, we all head for the shade. Some of the loveliest of small trees are in flower now and a trip to Brisbane or the older suburbs of the Gold Coast will see mature Crepe Myrtles in bloom. Many that grow in Brisbane’s parks including New Farm and the City Botanic Gardens are a legacy of Harry Oakman (1906-2002) Director of Brisbane City Parks from 1947- 1963. He was also a prolific author and champion of gardens and trees for South East Queensland. The delicate mauve form is close to a century old and grows in a heritage garden on the Gold Coast. Lagerstroemia indica is one of around fifty species of Crepe Myrtle from sub-tropical climates, first introduced to Australia in Sydney in 1836 and then available to the public through Camden Park Nursery Catalogues in 1843. It is a delightful tree, with special forms available for many years and recent cultivated forms allowing for the selection of mature tree size and flower colour. There are also dwarf forms and ground covers. And an Australian native species Lagerstroemia archeriana from the Rockhampton region which is equally delightful. The panicles of individual flowers, each 6 – 10cm across are from white to soft mauve or brilliant hot pinks develop along branch tips. Moderate pruning through the short deciduous winter period will encourage more branches and thus more flowers. Not to be outdone by the brilliant flowers, the bare winter trunks are equally beautiful with smooth mottled trunks. Crepe Myrtles require an open full sun position, and are not too fussy about soil types but the moist humid conditions may cause some mildew problems on foliage. They are in flower now at the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens. The effects of the sun can be alleviated with careful planning and planting. Even a group of large pots planted with trees offers respite in a small courtyard. It’s not only the shade offered, but also the cooling effect as hot air passes through the leaves and moisture evaporates into the atmosphere. Stay safe in the heat and the storms... 19 Navigating Driving Challenges: Age, Disability, and the Need for Constant Upskilling Driving is a dynamic skill that demands a constant adaptation to accommodate various life stages and social changes. This adaptation becomes particularly crucial when addressing the specific needs of senior drivers, individuals with disabilities, and the general driving population's need to stay abreast with evolving road conditions and regulations. The Role of Age Assessment as individuals age, driving abilities can change due to various factors like reflexes, vision, and health conditions. Regular age assessments for senior drivers are vital. These assessments help determine whether adjustments are needed to ensure the safety of all road users. They guide seniors on how to adapt their driving habits, suggest vehicle modifications for comfort and safety, and can even offer insights into alternative transportation options if needed. Driving with Disabilities represents independence, but for individuals with disabilities, it involves overcoming unique challenges. Customised driving instruction is vital in this context. It involves adapting vehicles with special modifications, like hand controls or wheelchair accessibility, and employing teaching methods tailored to each individual’s needs. This specialised approach empowers people with disabilities to gain confidence in their driving abilities, ensuring they can navigate the roads safely and independently. Keeping Up with Modern Driving. In an era where technology is rapidly advancing, upskilling in driving is essential for all. New vehicle technologies, updated road laws, and changing traffic conditions require even experienced drivers to periodically update their skills.
