2 as single-leg stands and simulated tightrope walking, can yield significant improvements. Tai Chi, with its deliberate movements and focus on posture, stands out as an effective practice for enhancing balance, particularly among seniors. Additionally, activities that enhance lower limb strength, like chair squats, and regular walking contribute to overall stability. Incorporating dance, yoga, or Pilates into one’s routine can further augment balance and strengthen the entire body. The key lies in consistency—there’s no cap on safe balance training frequency. Research indicates that engaging in three to six balance training sessions per week, each comprising four exercises, over an 11- to 12-week period can yield tangible improvements. In essence, as we navigate the journey of aging, prioritising balance isn’t merely a recommendation—it’s an imperative for safeguarding health and well-being. By embracing a holistic approach to wellness, we can fortify our foundation and stride confidently into the years ahead. The importance of maintaining balance as we age As we progress through life’s stages, prioritising our health becomes increasingly crucial. Embracing a proactive approach entails regular medical check-ups and adopting lifestyle adjustments to ward off chronic ailments. Central to self-care is the preservation and enhancement of our balance, which naturally diminishes over time. It’s a simple equation: use it or lose it. Balance is indispensable for a myriad of everyday activities, from navigating uneven terrains to tying shoelaces. But what exactly is balance, and why does it merit our attention? Essentially, it’s our ability to regulate our body’s position, whether stationary or in motion. This encompasses everything from maintaining an upright stance to executing fluid movements. Achieving balance involves the harmonious coordination of various bodily systems. Our visual (eyes help to perceive direction and motion), vestibular (inner ear and semi-circular canals help to monitor motion and provides orientation clues), and somatosensory (sensation feedback from joints in ankles, knees, spine and neck to help to understand where our body is in space) systems collaborate to provide crucial sensory feedback, enabling us to stay steady on our feet. However, this integration tends to deteriorate with age, making older individuals more susceptible to falls. The benefits of incorporating balance exercises into our routine are manifold. Not only do they mitigate the risk of falls and associated injuries, but they also enhance proprioception—the body’s spatial awareness. Bolstering balance instills confidence, allowing individuals to navigate daily life with assurance. So, how can one cultivate and sustain optimal balance? 3 Griffith University’s Clinical Trial Unit is looking for adults: 60 years of age or older In good general health No current immunodeficiency disease/condition No previous allergic reactions to vaccines HELP ADVANCE RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS (RSV) RESEARCH BY JOINING THIS CLINICAL TRIAL Participants will be reimbursed for study-related time and travel Seeking Volunteers for an Investigational RSV Vaccine Trial Register your interest by scanning the QR code For more information email clinicaltrialunit@griffith.edu.au VAE00017_Poster_2_GUCTU_v1.0_06Feb24 Why is this study being conducted? The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) mRNA vaccine candidate in adult participants 60 years of age and older. Respiratory syncytial virus is a leading cause of respiratory illness in adults (second to the flu) with no specific treatment options. Who is eligible to participate in this study? Men and women 60 years of age or older who: • Are in good general health • Have no current immunodeficiency disease/ condition • Have not had previous allergic reactions to vaccines Applicants who express interest in participating in this study will be reviewed and contacted as other requirement criteria must also be met. What happens during the study? At the first visit the study doctor and staff will ask participants questions to determine their eligibility to participate in the study, and if all requirement criteria are met, participants will be assigned to a treatment group. Vaccine assignment Each participant will be assigned by chance (like the flipping of a coin) to the study vaccine or placebo vaccine. Participants will have a 1 out of 2 chance of receiving the study vaccine and a 1 out of 2 chance of receiving the placebo vaccine. What Participants will need to do Participation in this study will involve around 2 onsite clinic visits (or 3 onsite clinic visits if participants are included in an Immunogenicity Subset), 2 scheduled phone contacts for safety follow up (or 1 scheduled phone contact if participants are included in an Immunogenicity Volunteers Needed for RSV mRNA Vaccine Study Subset), and active surveillance contacts (phone, email or text) every two weeks to check if participants have experienced any respiratorylike illness, over a 6 month period. Why should individuals consider participating in this study? If a person is eligible to participate, his/her data may help the research team learn more to advance the development of a vaccine that may protect against disease caused by the RSV virus. Respiratory syncytial virus is a leading cause of respiratory illness in adults (second to the flu) with no specific prevention or treatment options. While RSV can infect anyone, for some people, especially babies, older adults, and those with heart or lung problems or weakened immune systems, symptoms can be more severe. RSV infection can cause problems like worsening congestive heart failure (when your heart can’t pump enough oxygen to your body) or pneumonia (an infection of the lungs). Participation in this study is completely voluntary, and participants can decide to withdraw at any time. Eligible participants will be reimbursed for their time and travel associated with each study visit. Thank you for your service in my time of need. It is wonderful to see how much you are there to help others in their time of need.” Sincerely Cath and Cheryl Planning a trip is always an exhilarating endeavour, but setting a realistic budget can swiftly turn stressful, particularly for those inclined to overspend. However, the real challenge arises in adhering to that budget, come what may. While some individuals find budgeting second nature, for others, it’s a skill worth mastering. Why Travel With A Budget? The initial step is to define your objective. Why create a budget for your vacation? Whether it’s to save for a larger trip, manage expenses, or alleviate post-travel guilt, having clarity on your motivation is crucial for commitment. Getting To Your Destination Transportation typically consumes a significant portion of any budget. Whether you choose to travel by air, road, or bus, it’s essential to weigh cost against convenience. Booking flights early, seizing seat sales, and minimizing baggage fees can help trim transportation expenses significantly. Accommodation Your choice of accommodation can substantially impact your budget. Conducting thorough research on actual rates online, considering the duration of your stay, and your room preferences will provide a realistic estimate of accommodation costs. It’s advisable to explore a range of options, from hotels to vacation rentals, to find the best balance between comfort and affordability. A Daily Spending Limit Can Go A Long Way Setting a daily spending limit is pivotal in maintaining financial discipline while travelling. Temptations to splurge on souvenirs or indulge in extravagant dining experiences are common pitfalls. Establishing a daily budget for essentials like food, water, local transportation, and entertainment helps foster responsible spending habits. Any surplus funds can either be rolled over to cover future expenses or saved for larger purchases later in the trip. Creating a travel budget and sticking to it Expect a few bumps along the road in adhering to your budget. It’s okay not to stick to it perfectly the first time around, but the key is to strive for improvement. Additionally, it’s prudent to allocate funds for emergencies and always carry a credit card as a backup. Creating and sticking to a travel budget requires foresight, discipline, and adaptability. By understanding your motivations, making informed choices regarding transportation and accommodation, and setting daily spending limits, you can enjoy your travels without financial worries. Remember, the goal isn’t just to save money, but to maximize the enjoyment of your journey within your means. With careful planning and conscientious spending, you can make the most of every travel experience while staying financially responsible.

6 Explore and Engage by Volunteering The Naturally GC Volunteer Landcare Program is an initiative by the City of Gold Coast that encourages community involvement in the protection and enhancement of the city’s natural areas. But as we age, the aches and pains that creep in can threaten our ability to do the things we love. Truth is that, staying active and strong isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity for maintaining independence and enjoying a vibrant life. Here's why: Movement is Medicine: • Improved Bone Density: As we age, our bones naturally lose density, increasing the risk of fractures. Weightbearing exercises, like strength training, help combat this by stimulating bone growth and keeping our skeletons strong. • Enhanced Balance and Coordination: Falls are a major concern for older adults. Regular exercise, including balance and agility training, can significantly improve coordination and reduce the risk of falls. • Increased Energy and Stamina: Feeling tired all the time? Exercise is a natural energy booster. It improves cardiovascular health, which translates to better endurance for everyday activities, allowing you to explore the Gold Coast with renewed vigour. • Mental Wellbeing: Exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress, anxiety, and even depression. It releases endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, and promotes positive mental well-being. Building a Supportive Community: Taking the first step towards a more active lifestyle can be daunting. That's why finding a supportive community is crucial. At Club 40FIED, we understand the unique challenges faced by adults over 40. We offer a holistic approach to strength, movement, and health, focusing on individual needs in a nonjudgmental and encouraging environment. We are passionate about helping you move better, get stronger, and feel confident to embrace all that the Gold Coast offers. Naturally occurring widely in tropical woodlands of Brazil to Central America the striking deep blue to violet racemes of Dichorisandra thryisifolia Blue Ginger ushers the beginning of Autumn. Its similarity to ginger provides its common name, but the plant is not a ginger at all and belongs instead to the Commelinaceae Family. First introduced into Australian gardens in William Macarthur’s Camden Nursery Catalogue in 1857, it proved unable to survive frost and cold and was delegated to heated greenhouses in cooler areas of the southern states. Enjoying the warmth of coastal areas and in Northern NSW and Queensland It has been recorded as an invasive garden escapee in some areas, a consequence of garden refuse being dumped illegally. The large, spirally arranged leaves along segmented stems stand out best against the sheltered and shady backdrop of a fence or wall. Blue ginger produces new stems on underground rhizomes and left unpruned can develop a dense clump that can be split and divided. It readily propagates from the stem. Rare, and now listed by the International Union of Conservation in Nature (IUCN) as Critically Endangered in the wild, the beautiful Worlseya procera Empress of Brazil is equally rare (and expensive) for gardeners to locate. While its pale lilac flower is beautiful it is fickle in flowering, and alone, the Gardening by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant arching, recurved leaves that grow from a bulb are not particularly attractive. Its major threats include illegal collection and fire. Its story is not unlike that of Blue Ginger, discovered for plant science and gardening by 19th C explorers and botanists. Unlike widespread Blue Ginger it is found only in a very limited area of less than 70 sq km. Now almost extinct in nature it grows naturally on misty mountain peaks and cliff edges in Brazil, above 1200m altitude. The world of gardening has not been kind to some species after their discovery. Some have the potential to become weeds away from their natural places or where there are no natural predators, others are so rare as to be collected almost to extinction.

DENTURES DIRECT TO PUBLIC Registered with the Dental Board of Australia & Australian Dental Prosthetist Assoc. Ltd Dental Health and Dentures What are the types of Denture Adhesives? Paste application. Apply this denture adhesive to a dry or preferably wet denture. Avoid placing adhesive close to the denture borders. If the adhesive oozes, use less of the product. For dentures on the upper jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - along the ridge area and one down the centre. For dentures on the lower jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - in the centreof the ridge area. Powder application. Sprinkle a thin, uniform layer throughout the tissue-bearing surface of the denture. Shake off excess powder and press the denture into place. Powders may be preferred over pastes because they are easier to clean off the denture and tissue. In addition, they don’t have the same tendency as pastes do to “shim” (keep the denture away from the tissue). Will Dentures Change How I Speak? After getting dentures, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words. If so, practice by saying the difficult words out loud. With practice and with time you will become accustomed to speaking properly with dentures. If dentures “click” while you’re talking, contact your dentist. Dentures may occasionally slip when you laugh, cough, or smile. Reposition the dentures by gently biting down and swallowing. If any speaking problem persists, consult your dentist or prosthodontist. Are Dentures Worn 24 Hours a Day? Your dentist or prosthodontist will instruct you as to how long to wear dentures and when to remove them. During the first several days after receiving your denture, you may be asked to wear it all the time, including while you sleep. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it is the quickest way to identify the areas on the denture that may need adjustment. Once adjustments are made, you should remove dentures before going to bed. This allows gum tissues to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. The denture can be put back in the mouth in the morning. Should I Use a Denture Adhesive? A denture adhesive may be considered under the following circumstances: • To enhance satisfaction with a properly constructed denture. Adhesives enhance retention, stability, bite force, and an individual’s sense of security. • To assist individuals with dry mouth conditions that lessen denture adherence, such as individuals taking cold medications, those with neurologic disabilities including strokes, and the elderly. • To provide added stability and security for those who place unusual demands on facial muscles, such as public speakers or musicians. PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In the intricate workings of the human body, the eyes are remarkable organs that require a myriad of nutrients to function optimally and stave off diseases. The adage “you are what you eat” holds particularly true when it comes to maintaining eye health. A balanced diet is not just beneficial for your waistline but also for your eyesight. The connection between nutrition and eye health is well-established. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play pivotal roles in maintaining eye health and preventing conditions like cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting the eyes from oxidative stress that can lead to chronic eye diseases. Vitamin C, found abundantly in citrus fruits and vegetables, supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. It’s believed to combat cataract formation and, when combined with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of AMD and visual acuity loss. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, can be sourced from nuts and seeds and contributes to cell protection from free radicals. Zinc, a mineral present in high concentrations in the eyes, plays a crucial role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina, aiding in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Meat, poultry, fish, and legumes are excellent sources of zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. They are natural sunblock for the eyes, filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protecting against oxidative damage. Leafy greens, eggs, and other foods are rich in these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are vital for cell membrane health in the retina and may help prevent AMD. Fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3s. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, exemplifies a dietary pattern that supports eye health. It’s not just about individual nutrients; the synergy of a nutrient-rich diet contributes to overall eye health and function. The significance of nutrition in eye health cannot be overstated. As we age, our eyes are susceptible to various conditions, but a diet rich in specific nutrients can help protect our vision. It’s a simple yet powerful truth: the food we consume can have a profound impact on our eyesight. Schedule Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting potential eye conditions before they manifest symptoms and cause irreversible vision loss or blindness. Firstly, they enable seniors to age in place, surrounded by familiar surroundings and cherished memories. This fosters a sense of comfort and security, which is essential for overall well-being. Home care services promote independence by empowering seniors to retain control over their daily routines and lifestyle choices. Whether it’s assistance with medication management, meal preparation, or mobility support, home care services are flexible and adaptable to meet the changing needs of individuals as they age. Independence: Perhaps the most significant benefit of home care services is the ability for seniors to maintain their independence and autonomy. By receiving care in their own homes, seniors can continue to live life on their terms, making decisions about their daily routines and activities with the support of their caregivers. Comfort and Familiarity: For many seniors, their home is a place of comfort and familiarity. By receiving care in their own homes, seniors can maintain their routines, stay connected to their community, and enjoy the familiar surroundings that bring them comfort and peace of mind. Improved Quality of Life: Ultimately, the goal of home care services is to improve the overall quality of life for seniors. By providing support, assistance, and companionship, home care services help seniors to remain engaged, active, and connected to their communities, enhancing their wellbeing and quality of life as they age. Companionship and Social Engagement: Beyond practical assistance, Home Care Assistance aged care services also emphasise the importance of companionship and social engagement. Loneliness and isolation can have detrimental effects on seniors’ mental and emotional health. To combat this, many aged care providers offer socialisation programs, group activities, and outings designed to foster connections and build meaningful relationships. These opportunities for interaction not only alleviate feelings of loneliness but also promote cognitive stimulation and emotional well-being. The Role of Caregivers: At the heart of aged care services are the dedicated caregivers who provide compassionate and professional support to seniors. Caregivers play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for their clients, offering not only physical assistance but also emotional support and companionship. 14 Enhancing Mobility: Key features to consider when purchasing a Walker/Rollator Choosing the right walker or rollator is essential for maintaining independence and regaining mobility. As the market offers many options, it can be overwhelming to navigate the sea of features and make an informed decision. Let’s explore the crucial features you should consider when purchasing a walker/rollator. Safety and Stability: A paramount concern is the walker/rollator’s stability. Look for features such as sturdy frames, reliable brakes, and non-slip handles to ensure a secure walking experience. Adjustable height options and ergonomic grips are vital to promote proper posture and reduce strain on the body. Ease of Use: Consider the manoeuvrability of the walker/rollator. Lightweight models with swivel wheels provide greater agility, while larger wheels offer better stability on various terrains. Additionally, features like foldability, one-hand operation, and intuitive locking mechanisms simplify transportation and storage. Comfort and Customisation: A walker/rollator should provide optimal comfort during use. Padded seats and backrests offer convenient resting spots, while cushioned handles minimise discomfort and pressure. Fit and Adjustability: Proper fit is crucial for user comfort and safety. Look for adjustable handle heights that suit your individual stature. Consider seat height if you plan to use the rollator for resting. Assess the weight capacity to ensure it can accommodate your needs. Real-Life Reviews: Don’t overlook the power of user experiences. Seek out reviews and testimonials from individuals who have already purchased the walker/rollator you are considering. Their insights can provide valuable information and help you make an informed decision. Remember, choosing the right walker/rollator is a highly personal decision. See advert page 15 > What to try when your family tree leaves you stumped When you hit a brick wall in your family tree, frustration and confusion can be overwhelming. As someone who's been down this road, I've discovered a few strategies that might help you navigate through these tough spots. Firstly, take a step back. Sometimes, staring at the same documents or names for too long can cloud your judgment. Put the research aside for a few days or even weeks. Clear your mind and return with fresh eyes. You might spot something you missed before. Next, broaden your search. If you're fixated on one particular ancestor, try exploring their siblings, cousins, or even neighbours. Sometimes, the key to breaking through a brick wall lies in the periphery of your research. Consider alternative spellings and variations of names. Our ancestors weren't always consistent with their names on official documents, leading to discrepancies in records. Don't dismiss a potential lead just because the name doesn't match perfectly. Utilise different sources and repositories. Libraries, archives, and online databases each have their own set of records and resources. If you've been focusing solely on one source, try branching out to others. Lastly, don't hesitate to seek help. Whether it's joining genealogy forums, hiring a professional researcher, or collaborating with distant relatives, fresh perspectives and collective knowledge can often provide the breakthrough you need. Remember, building your family tree is a journey, not a race. Embrace the challenges, learn from setbacks, and celebrate every small victory along the way. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. When asked why he was in such a hurry, the driver explained he was an entertainer – a magician and juggler – and was running late for his show in the next town. The officer, intrigued by the idea of juggling, mentioned he’d let the speeding slide if the driver could show him a bit of his act. Unfortunately, the driver had already sent his gear ahead to the venue. Undeterred, the officer suggested using some road safety flares from his car for the impromptu performance. The juggler agreed, and soon he was juggling the lit flares as the officer watched. During the act, another vehicle pulled up. A fellow, who seemed to have enjoyed a few too many, stepped out to watch. After a short while, he wandered over to the patrol car, opened the back door, and climbed in. The officer, noticing this, walked over and asked what he was up to. The man replied, “Mate, I might as well be heading to the station with you because there’s no way I can do that!” TO ENTER SEND YOUR COMPLETED CRYPTIC CROSSWORD TO: “Over 50s Cryptic Crossword Competition” PO Box 3302, Burleigh Town City Q. 4220 Write your name and address on the back of an envelope.
