June 2026 - No. 133 As the Australian art world continues to navigate changing tastes and economic pressures, one regional Queensland exhibition is quietly proving that passion for representational art remains stronger than ever. This June, the annual The Doyles Art Award returns to Mudgeeraba, bringing with it an extraordinary level of national interest. Organisers have revealed that nearly 1,000 entries were received for the 2026 award — a remarkable figure that highlights both the prestige of the competition and the enduring appetite for traditional fine art in Australia. Held from 19–28 June, the finalist exhibition has become one of Queensland’s most anticipated cultural events, drawing artists, collectors and visitors from across the country. Best of all, entry to the exhibition is completely free, offering the public rare access to a significant national art prize without the barriers often associated with major gallery events. What makes The Doyles particularly unique is its grassroots foundation. The award is run by a dedicated team of volunteers and operates as a notfor-profit organisation, with a strong focus on supporting Australian artists and fostering community engagement through the arts. In an era where many cultural events struggle for funding and continuity, The Doyles continues to thrive through local support, sponsorship and sheer determination. The award’s major acquisitive prize of $20,000 ensures the winning artwork becomes part of the event’s legacy, while the total prize pool of $33,000 positions the exhibition among the country’s more substantial representational art prizes. Categories span landscape, figurative, still life, junior and all-ability sections, reflecting the inclusive ethos the event has become known for. Transforming the Outdoor Stage into an intimate new theatre venue, Winter Season brings some of the most exciting theatre, comedy and contemporary performance touring the nation directly to the Gold Coast – and places audiences closer to the action than ever before. Across a curated program of eight standout works, Winter Season invites audiences to immerse themselves in the energy and excitement of live performance. Audiences can return to HOTA throughout the winter months and enjoy a diverse mix of performances spanning dynamic storytelling, mind-blowing visual theatre, life-affirming comedy and cabaret, riotous gigtheatre, and moving original music. The Winter Season is designed to bring fresh experiences to the Gold Coast, giving locals the chance to see nationally touring productions. It’s also the perfect opportunity to gather friends, enjoy dinner or drinks before a show, and make a night of it at HOTA. Tickets for individual performances and season information are available through the HOTA website, with early booking recommended as the intimate theatre setting means seats are limited. Winter Season 8 July - 22 August 135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise hota.com.au Importantly, the exhibition is not simply about competition. Hundreds of artworks will be available for purchase throughout the event, giving visitors the opportunity to support working Australian artists directly and perhaps discover the next major name in contemporary representational art. This year’s judging panel is expected to once again bring together respected voices from the Australian arts sector, continuing the award’s reputation for credibility and artistic integrity. For many visitors, however, the real appeal lies beyond the prizes. The exhibition has become a celebration of artistic craftsmanship, storytelling and community spirit — all set against the backdrop of the historic Gold Coast hinterland village of Mudgeeraba. At a time when regional arts events are increasingly important to Australia’s cultural identity, The Doyles stands as a reminder that world-class artistic experiences do not belong solely to capital cities. Sometimes, they happen in small villages powered by volunteers, passion and a deep belief in the value of art.

It’s no longer just about living longer, it’s about staying strong, independent, and energised for as many years as possible. At the centre of this shift is nutrition, and more specifically, a growing understanding that what we eat plays a critical role in how we age. One of the most important changes happening in the body over time is the gradual loss of muscle mass, known as sarcopenia. While it’s a natural part of ageing, its impact can be significant, affecting strength, mobility, balance, and even the ability to recover from illness. What’s often overlooked is that as we age, our need for protein increases, even though appetite and overall food intake tend to decline. This creates a nutritional gap that many older Australians unknowingly fall into. Protein is no longer just a nutrient associated with fitness; it has become essential to healthy ageing. Adequate intake supports muscle maintenance, immune function, and overall resilience, helping older adults remain active and independent for longer. Without enough protein in the diet, the body struggles to preserve muscle, increasing the risk of frailty and falls. And yet, for many seniors, meeting these needs isn’t always straightforward. A reduced appetite, changes in taste and smell, fatigue, and the effort required to shop, and cook can all make regular, balanced eating more difficult. At the same time, the body’s demand for key nutrients including protein, calcium, vitamin D, and B vitamins, continues to rise. This paradox means that meals need to work harder, delivering more nutrition in smaller, more manageable portions. This is where the idea of nutrient-dense eating becomes so important. Rather than focusing on quantity, the emphasis shifts to quality, meals that are thoughtfully balanced to provide high-quality protein, a variety of vegetables, wholegrains, and healthy fats. It’s about ensuring that every bite contributes meaningfully to overall health, supporting not just physical strength but also energy, cognition, and overall wellbeing. This is why ready-made meals have taken on a new role in the conversation around healthy ageing. No longer seen as a compromise, they are increasingly recognised as a practical and effective way to support consistent nutrition. When designed well, these meals provide balanced portions, reliable protein content, and the reassurance that nutritional needs are being met without the daily effort of planning, shopping, and cooking. For those looking to make that shift, there’s never been a better time to explore what’s available. Gourmet Meals continues to expand its range of dietitian-informed, proteinbalanced meals designed specifically to support healthy ageing and independence at home. With the introduction of four new large meals, one new regular meal, and a delicious new dessert, there are now even more options to enjoy, without compromising on nutrition or convenience. Whether you’re looking to increase your protein intake, simplify your routine, or simply enjoy a greater variety of meals, you can order today and have nutritious, readymade meals delivered straight to your door. 6 For many older Australians, ageing in place isn’t just about staying at home — it’s about staying together. Increasingly, couples in their 70s, 80s and 90s are choosing to remain in the homes they’ve shared for decades rather than being separated because their care needs differ. With the right support in place, this is becoming more achievable than ever. appropriate care. Professional support can also ease the pressure on spouses who gradually take on a caregiving role. While caring for a partner often comes from love and commitment, it can become physically and emotionally demanding. Bringing in professional carers allows the relationship to remain centred on companionship rather than full-time caregiving responsibilities. Planning support early can make a significant difference. Home care is not simply a last resort — it can be a proactive way for couples to maintain independence, stay connected and continue enjoying life together in the place they know and love most. see advert page 7 > Home Care for Couples: Keeping Partners Together While Getting the Help They Need Home care for couples offers a practical and compassionate solution, allowing both partners to receive the support they need while continuing to enjoy the comfort, routines and connection of home life. Whether one partner requires personal care while the other remains largely independent, or both are managing age-related challenges, tailored home care can help preserve dignity and quality of life. As Australians are living longer, many couples are reaching later life together, often with differing health needs. One partner may need assistance with mobility or medication management, while the other simply requires help around the home. In the past, this may have meant moving one partner into residential care. Today, flexible home care services provide another option, helping couples remain together while receiving individual support. One of the greatest benefits of home care is maintaining emotional wellbeing. Couples who have spent decades together often rely on shared routines, daily conversation and companionship. Remaining together can reduce stress and improve emotional health for both people. Home care also allows support to be tailored to each individual. One partner may need help with showering, dressing or continence care, while the other may only require assistance with shopping, meal preparation or household tasks. Care plans can adapt as needs change, supporting independence while ensuring both partners receive Mudgeeraba Show Time One of the Gold Coast’s Favourite Weekends is Back There’s something about the Mudgeeraba Agricultural Show that just feels like home. Maybe it’s the smell of hot chips and fairy floss in the air, the sound of kids laughing on the rides, or seeing the showgrounds come alive with colour and excitement. Whatever it is, the much-loved show returns on 27–28 June 2026, and for plenty of Gold Coast locals it’s one of those weekends that’s marked on the calendar every year. When people think of the Gold Coast, they usually picture beaches, surf and skyscrapers. But our region has always had another side too – a country side. Before all the growth and development, places like Mudgeeraba were at the heart of the area, and the annual show is still a great reminder of those local roots and traditions. And if you haven’t been for a while, there is a lot more happening than many people realise. The showgrounds will be packed with favourites including horse events, livestock judging, woodchopping, working dog demonstrations, arts and crafts displays, showbags, rides and plenty of food stalls. The pavilion is always worth a wander too, with local baking, photography, produce and handmade creations on display. Kids will love getting close to the animals, while the Norco Milking Station gives everyone a chance to try their hand at milking a cow and learn a little more about life on the land. There’s also live music, heritage displays and a few crowd favourites that have become part of the tradition over the years. As the sun goes down, the atmosphere steps up another level. The always-popular Horse vs Bike race and the Young Farmers Challenge bring plenty of laughs, before the night wraps up with fireworks lighting up the winter sky. Whether you go for the rides, the animals, the food or simply for a fun day outdoors, the Mudgeeraba Show still delivers that classic country-show feeling right here in our own backyard.

8 Antique Buyers in the Area In most Australian homes, there's a drawer. You know the one. It holds the tangle of old jewellery nobody wears anymore — the broken chain from an aunt's estate, the ring that no longer fits, the earring whose partner disappeared a decade ago. It holds the coins collected on overseas trips, the broken old watch, the bracelet bought in a different chapter of life. Most of us assume these things have sentimental value, or no value at all. What we rarely consider is that they might have real, financial value — sitting quietly while the gold price holds near historic highs. That's where father-son buying duo Mike and Nate come in. Mike and Nate are enthusiastic antique buyers with a particular eye for gold jewellery — broken or intact — gold and silver coins, mechanical watches, military medals, banknotes, and all other kinds of coins. "Everyone has something we want to buy," says Mike, "and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item as we are buying ten thousand." With gold still trading well above traditional levels, now is an opportune time to dig out those old chains, rings, and brooches and find out what they're actually worth. "This is an ideal time to sell," Mike emphasises. "We will buy anything made of gold — old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth. We also need silver in any form, including coins and bars of any size." Don't overlook the coins. That old tin of foreign currency at the back of the cupboard could contain a rarity worth far more than face value. "We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations — bags, tins, folders, however they come," says Mike. "We'll go through them on the spot and give you a fair idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up." Mechanical watches are also in urgent demand. Brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Longines, and even some Gents Seiko’s can command strong prices depending on model and condition — and many people have no idea what a vintage watch sitting in a drawer is currently worth to a serious collector. In today's era of downsizing and decluttering, there has rarely been a better moment to open those drawers, go through those cupboards, and turn forgotten items into real money. Mike and Nate will be in the Gold Coast area this coming month, doing home visits. Call today to book yours. For more details see back cover. 9 Denture Repairs Over the life span of your dentures there comes a time where they will need repairing. Talk to the team at Noble Denture Design if you think your dentures might need repairing or relining. We encourage all of our patients to maintain their dentures and reduce risk of breakage. However, in the event that a denture becomes damaged or broken, denture repairs can ensure continued comfortable and stable denture wear. Typically, dentures become damaged or broken when dropped during the process of being placed in the mouth or cleaned. When dentures fall on hard surfaces, such as a tiled floor or in a ceramic basin, they may fracture or crack. Instead of attempting to fix the denture yourself or going without them, get in touch with our clinic immediately and we will safely and professionally repair your dentures. If you are unsure about the condition of your dentures talk to our Dental Prosthetist about your repair or replacement options. Relines When your dentures start to cause irritation or discomfort it’s important that you see your Dental Prosthetist as your dentures may require a reline. Dentures should not be painful or cause irritation as you are wearing your dentures everyday so comfort is all that matters. Poorly fitted dentures can become irritating and it’s important at the first signs of pain you contact Denture Professional. A Denture reline can eliminate irritations and pain as we reline your denture so it fits your mouth perfectly. This consists of adding a new base material to the tissue side of the denture (fitting area) so that it fits properly. An impression is taken inside your existing denture, and in most cases the reline is completed on the same day the impression is taken. Relining affects only the fit of your denture, and will not change the appearance. Relines are required when tissue changes occur due to resorption (shrinking). This could be due to: - Loss of weight - Loss of teeth - Ageing - Disease or illness - Tooth extraction At Noble Denture Design we do Same Day, Repairs and Relines. 10 Have you done your free bowel test? Australian residents aged between 45-74 are invited to screen for bowel cancer through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. The bowel screening tests are completed at home in private and returned in the mail. Why is it important to do the test? Bowel Cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, and the second highest cause of cancer death. Around 400 Gold Coast residents are diagnosed each year. Most bowel cancers develop without symptoms in the early stages. Bowel cancers found through routine screening are usually less advanced than those diagnosed at a later stage, often after symptoms appear. When detected early almost all bowel cancers are treatable. How does the test work? The bowel screening test looks for tiny amounts of blood in poo, which may be a sign of changes in the bowel. If blood is found in either of the two test samples, the next step is usually a diagnostic test, such as a colonoscopy, to check the bowel for any abnormalities. Most people who have blood detected in their samples will not have bowel cancer, but many will have small growths in their bowel called polyps. If polyps are found during a colonoscopy they are usually removed, which stops them from potentially turning into a cancer at a later stage. Are the tests suitable for everyone? Bowel screening tests are intended for healthy people who have no obvious bowel symptoms (such as blood in your poo, persistent changes in bowel habits, weight loss you can’t explain, extreme tiredness for no reason, or abdominal pain or lumps). Anyone with bowel symptoms should discuss them with their doctor as soon as possible and not wait for a screening test. How do I get a bowel screening test? The free test kits are automatically sent in the mail to eligible people aged 50-74, and people aged 45-49 can join the program by requesting their first test kit. Kits will be mailed to the address registered with Medicare or DVA, so it’s important to keep this up to date. If your test kit has expired, was thrown away or never arrived, a free replacement test can be requested online at ncsr.gov.au/boweltest or by phoning 1800 627 701. GOLD COAST FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Putting the Family Story Together It can take a while but once you’re at a stage where your research is ready to be put together think about how to translate all the facts. Specific genealogical software or good organisation of paper copy will do a lot of the work but for others to enjoy and want to read your results, take the time to turn notes and facts into an easy read. Keeping birth, death, marriage and other life milestones, as lists, add your story next, to help lead the reader through the stages of a person/ families life. Consider: • Chronological order • Generational skills or traits. Describe the period for scholars, tradesmen, farmers, labourers, convicts, criminals, clergy • Were life aspirations realised. How? Why? • Describe family secret or suspicion • Religious or cultural differences. Consequences? Changes? • The personal impact from war • Traditions, locations and languages spoken in your family • Generational financial and educational circumstances • Medicinal or healing remedies or rituals from another age or culture • Extended family relationship • Generational mental health impact • Was music, art, imagination, and creativity encouraged or suppressed? Why? • Have hobbies been passed down • Was sports or competition traditional • The story or mystery of photographs or objects passed down for generations • What was the role of humour in your family. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. For further information visit http://www.goldcoastfhs.org. au or attend our rooms at the Bicentennial Building, 833 Nerang-Southport Road, Nerang.

12 0417 294 778 A Touch of Grass Garden Care GARDEN CLEANUPS / REJUVENATION & MAKEOVERS A SPECIALTY We offer an experienced, professional and reliable service Call Jeremy on ... Est. Gold Coast since 2001 We’ll bring your garden back to life - creating a refreshed space where you can relax and enjoy your tranquil surroundings * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping I’m writing just as London opens the gates to the Chelsea Flower Show, remembering how inspiring it is, and how I would like to be there for a sixth time. I’ve been fortunate enough to spend long days revelling among the flower displays in the Grand Marquee, walking along the Avenues, and vying for a space to take in the inspiring Designer Gardens. As an Australian at Chelsea, I have been struck by the immense interest of the crowds in Australian-designed gardens and Australian flora. One of many sponsored by Australian Nurseryman Wes Fleming and a Gold Medal Winner in 2008 for celebrity gardener Jamie Durie was inspired by the natural landscapes of Kakadu. In 2011, Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) Melbourne, with several sponsors including the Victorian Government, was another Gold Medal winner. Landscape Designer Jim Fogarty, with Dr Philip Moors, then Executive Director of the RBG Melbourne, based the garden on the remarkable landscapes of the Australian Garden at RBG Cranbourne. I missed this one at Chelsea, but I eventually saw it recreated at London’s Capel Manor Environmental College. A few years later, I was back cheering for another Wes Flemingsponsored garden, which took out a Gold Medal and the Grand Prize - Best in Show. There was a procession of Chelsea visitors standing in awe at the brilliant design by Landscape designer Phillip Johnson. This inspiring garden featured Australia’s native plants and, like the gardens before this, wowed everyone with Australia’s native flora. A more extensive version of this landscape has been reproduced at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges. This year, a small garden titled ‘Journey Beyond the Tracks – from Adelaide to Perth’ picked up a SilverGilt Award for British designer Max Parker Smith. The design showcases the climate-resilient flora of South and Western Australia and uses reclaimed and environmentally responsible materials. At the end of the show, they are to be introduced into London’s Kensington Gardens. Chelsea Flower Show never fails, evolving with the changing environment and leading sustainable gardening practices. Australian plants and Australian landscapeinspired designs have made an impact in Britain, stunning Chelsea audiences and contributing to ethical, low-impact gardening. The Gold Coast region has an amazing number of plant species that can be introduced into the landscape palette of our private and public gardens to showcase our own local character. LURE Someone opened a brand-new “Husband Superstore” — and the rules alone are hilarious. A new shop opens where women can go pick out a husband. At the entrance, there’s a big sign explaining how it works: The store has six floors. The quality of the husbands improves as you go up. You may choose a husband from any floor… but once you go up, you can’t go back down. You may only visit the store once. A woman decides to check it out. First Floor sign: These men have steady jobs. She thinks, “Well, that’s a good start,” but heads upstairs. Second Floor sign: These men have jobs and love kids. “Nice,” she says, “but let’s see what’s upstairs.” Third Floor sign: These men have jobs, love kids, and are very good-looking. “Now we’re talking!” she says — but curiosity keeps her going. Fourth Floor sign: These men have jobs, love kids, are incredibly handsome, and help with housework. She gasps. “Wow… that’s amazing!” Still… she keeps climbing. Fifth Floor sign: These men have jobs, love kids, are movie-star handsome, help with housework, and are extremely romantic. She nearly stops… but decides to peek at the last floor. Sixth Floor sign: You are visitor number 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men here. This floor exists only to prove that women are impossible to please. Thank you for visiting the Husband Store. Across the street, the same owner opened a Wife Store. First Floor: Wives who love romance. Second Floor: Wives who love romance, enjoy a cold beer, and bring money to the table. Floors three through six have never been visited.
15 When Cheap Hearing Aids Become an Expensive Mistake We have all seen advertising that makes us stop and wonder: Am I being ripped off somewhere else? It might be a “limited time offer” that never seems to end, a sale built on inflated prices, or a product promoted so cheaply that every other option suddenly looks unreasonable. Some advertising in hearing care is designed to be memorable — even confronting — with the suggestion that people may be getting “ripped off” if they pay more elsewhere. But this message can quietly reduce hearing care to one question: “How cheap is the hearing aid?” But hearing care is not the same as buying a toaster. A hearing aid is a medical device. More importantly, it is only one part of a successful hearing solution. Yes, some hearing aids are cheaper. But cheap can come at a cost too. It is just not always printed on the price tag. The real cost often appears later, after the devices have been fitted and the sale has been made. The person is still struggling to follow conversation, exhausted in background noise, avoiding social situations, or wondering why they spent thousands of dollars on something that now lives in the top drawer. That is where hearing care can go wrong. Best-practice hearing care takes time. It requires careful assessment, real ear measurements, speech-in-noise testing, counselling, fine-tuning, follow-up, troubleshooting, and ongoing support. Sometimes it may also include auditory training or additional assistive technology. When hearing aids are treated as a quick sale rather than part of an ongoing healthcare process, people do not just lose money. They lose trust. They may start to believe “hearing aids don’t work” or “they just wanted to sell me something.” Sadly, that mistrust can stop people from seeking help again, even when better care could have changed the outcome. Affordable options absolutely have a place. But people deserve to understand what they are paying for. Good hearing care is not about charging more for the sake of it. It is about expertise, verification, adjustment, support, and a clinician who is invested in the outcome — not just the sale.

He growled, “Well, friend - whatcha gonna do about that?” Well..I just burst into tears. I said, “My friend, today has been, by far, the worst day of my life. I was two minutes late to a meeting, and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, my car was gone - stolen - and I don’t have any insurance. Then, I left my wallet in the cab I took home. When I got home, I found my wife in bed with my Joe, my best friend… and to top it off, my dog bit me as I stormed out. So I came here to get the courage to end it all. I bought a drink… I dropped the poison in it… I sat here watching it dissolve… and then you walked in and drank the lot!” “But hey, anyway… enough about me. How’s your day going?”
17 As winter settles over the Gold Coast and temperatures drop, many locals begin to experience the uncomfortable effects of dry eyes. Cold air and indoor heating can strip moisture from the environment, leaving eyes feeling dry, irritated, or gritty. Fortunately, there are simple ways to help keep your eyes comfortable and healthy throughout the chilly season. Here are some effective tips to help manage dry eyes this winter. Keep Hydrated - It’s easy to forget to drink water during the colder months, but staying hydrated is key to maintaining moisture in your eyes. Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day to support natural tear production. Warm herbal teas or hot water with lemon are great alternatives if plain water doesn’t appeal in the cold. Add Moisture to the Air - Heating systems in homes and offices can create dry indoor air, making dry eye symptoms worse. Using a humidifier helps restore moisture to the air, which can benefit not just your eyes, but your skin and sinuses too. Remember to Blink - We often blink less in cold or windy weather, especially when spending time outside. Regular blinking helps spread tears evenly across the eyes, reducing dryness and irritation. Be mindful of blinking, particularly if you’re staring at screens. Shield Your Eyes Outdoors - Wind and cold air can quickly evaporate moisture from your eyes. Wearing wraparound sunglasses or protective eyewear when outdoors can shield your eyes from the elements and help retain natural Combatting Dry Eyes in Winter lubrication. They also offer protection from dust, pollen, and wind-borne irritants. Use Lubricating Eye Drops - If your eyes still feel dry despite your best efforts, over-thecounter lubricating drops can provide fast relief. Opt for preservative-free options if you use them frequently, as they’re gentler on the eyes. Dry eyes are a common issue during our cooler months, but with a few simple lifestyle adjustments, you can minimise discomfort and keep your eyes feeling their best. If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms, we’d be happy to help with a comprehensive dry eye assessment. Get in touch— we’d love to see you!
