Phone Geoff Yates 0412 11 32 11 08/26 One of the Gold Coast's most spectacular annual events is set to return this August, with the Pacific Airshow Gold Coast taking to the skies from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 August 2026. As the largest airshow event ever held in Australia, it promises three unforgettable days of breathtaking aerial displays over the iconic Surfers Paradise beachfront. Whether you're a lifelong aviation enthusiast, someone with an appreciation for history, or simply looking for an exciting day out with family and friends, the Pacific Airshow offers something for everyone. The action takes place daily from approximately 10.30am to 3.30pm, with the main Show Centre located on the beach opposite Pacific Airshow Returns to Thrill the Gold Coast Cavill Avenue. Locals will once again have the opportunity to witness some of the world's most impressive military and civilian aircraft without leaving the Gold Coast. Previous airshows have featured incredible performances from the United States Air Force F-22 Raptors, Australia's powerful F/A-18 Super Hornet, the precision flying of the RAAF Roulettes, gravity-defying Jet Suit demonstrations, daring parachute teams landing directly onto the beach, and beautifully restored vintage aircraft including the legendary Spitfire. Of course, the excitement isn't limited to the skies. The Show Centre will also feature live entertainment, food trucks, children's activities, performer signing sessions and licensed areas where visitors can relax and enjoy the atmosphere between flying displays. continued page 2 >
2 While vitamins and other supplements can be beneficial, seek advice about what’s right for you. Take care when taking supplements Older Australians are being urged to take greater care with vitamin and supplement use, amid growing evidence that many people are selfprescribing without expert advice and may be putting their health at risk. An investigation by British consumer group, Which?, found widespread confusion among supplement users, with many people taking multiple products daily and uncertain about correct dosages or whether they are needed at all. Three-quarters of adults surveyed reported using supplements, but a majority had not sought professional advice, raising concerns about inappropriate use and potential overdosing. Similar trends are evident in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, one in three Australians (33.6%) took a dietary supplement in 2023, with vitamins and minerals the most common products. While some supplements can play a role in addressing deficiencies, particularly in older people, they are not a substitute for a balanced diet and should be used carefully. Health experts warn that supplements are often perceived as harmless, but this is not always the case. Like any medicine, they can cause side effects, interact with prescription drugs, and lead to harm when taken incorrectly. Older Australians are particularly vulnerable because they are more likely to be managing several health conditions and medications, increasing the risk of dangerous interactions. Recent Australian cases highlight these risks. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has tightened controls on vitamin B6 after reports last year of more than 100 people experiencing serious nerve damage linked to excessive intake. Many cases involved people unknowingly consuming the vitamin from many different products, leading to cumulative overdosing. The TGA stresses that vitamins and supplements are regulated as medicines in Australia, but levels of scrutiny vary. Lower-risk products, which make up the bulk of supplements on shelves, are not individually assessed for effectiveness before sale. This means consumers need to take an active role in checking what they are taking and why. Key risks include taking unnecessary supplements, exceeding recommended doses, and combining products that have the same ingredients. Interactions with common medications, including blood thinners, heart medicines, or antidepressants, can reduce effectiveness or increase side effects. Experts consistently advise that the safest approach is to seek guidance from a GP, pharmacist, or accredited dietitian before starting any supplement. They can assess whether a supplement is needed, recommend appropriate doses, and check for interactions with existing treatments. Supplements can be helpful in specific circumstances, but careful use and professional advice are essential to ensure they support good health rather than undermine it. Article supplied by National Seniors. Join National Seniors today! For more information www.nationalseniors.com.au With more than 250,000 spectators expected across the three days, the event brings a wonderful buzz to the Gold Coast while showcasing our city to visitors from around Australia and overseas. Even if you don't purchase a ticket, you'll still be able to enjoy many of the flying displays from beaches, parks and other public viewing areas along the coastline. If you do plan to attend the Show Centre, organisers strongly recommend travelling by public transport. With affordable fares available and limited parking around Surfers Paradise, it's by far the easiest way to enjoy the event without the stress of traffic. Tickets are already on sale, with one-day, three-day, family and premium packages available. The full flying program will be announced closer to the event, but if previous years are any indication, Gold Coast residents can once again look forward to one of the most exciting weekends on the local events calendar. 4 The Hidden Chemicals You Can’t Wash Off Most of us wash our fruit and vegetables before eating them. It’s a sensible habit, but washing can only remove what’s on the surface. If a substance has already been absorbed while food is growing, it can’t simply be rinsed away. That’s one reason recent headlines about paraquat have attracted so much attention. Paraquat is one of the world’s most widely used herbicides. While it has been banned or heavily restricted in more than 70 countries, it remains approved for use in Australia under strict regulations. The renewed public discussion has encouraged many Australians to think more carefully about the environmental chemicals we encounter every day. A Dead Platypus. One Water Test. A Bigger Question for the Gold Coast. When a dead platypus was discovered in Ourimbah Creek on the NSW Central Coast earlier this year, it prompted investigators to test the surrounding waterways. The results revealed elevated PFAS levels in parts of the catchment, with some readings exceeding national guideline levels. Investigators believe the contamination may date back decades. Although these findings relate to one location, they raise a much broader question. What contaminants may be present in the catchments and waterways that supply the water flowing into our own homes on the Gold Coast? PFAS, often called “forever chemicals”, are a group of thousands of manmade chemicals used since the 1940s in products such as firefighting foams, non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics. Because they resist heat, oil and water, they break down extremely slowly, allowing them to persist in the environment for decades. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Measures Survey, more than 85% of Australians aged 12 years and over had detectable levels of several common PFAS chemicals in their blood, reflecting decades of environmental exposure. You can’t control everything. You can control your water. Paraquat and PFAS are different substances with different sources. But they highlight the same reality. We can’t control every environmental exposure. We can’t control how every crop is grown. We can’t undo decades of contamination. What we can control is the quality of the water flowing through our homes. Whether you’re renting, renovating or building your forever home, there’s a water filtration solution to suit your lifestyle. From renterfriendly benchtop systems and portable bath and shower filters you can take with you when you move, to undersink and reverse osmosis systems that integrate seamlessly with your existing plumbing, through to complete whole-home filtration, Pure Water Systems offers solutions for every stage of life. Yet somehow, he emerges with his kindness intact. This is one of the most inspiring stories I’ve ever encountered.’ - HUGH VAN CUYLENBURG I understand there may come a day when I read these words and no longer recognise them as my own. But when that day arrives, I hope I still feel something within them. I hope I still recognise the love. Because this is not only a story about what can be taken from us. It is a story about what remains. When Jim Rogers was diagnosed with Youngonset Alzheimer’s at just 55, it was another devastating blow to a family all too familiar with loss. But with the support of his husband and children, Jim refused to disappear. Instead, he became one of Australia’s most recognisable voices for people living with dementia, and those who love them. Written with his daughter Millie, in Holding on to Happiness, Jim reflects on a life shaped by heartbreak and extraordinary devotion: from losing his adored wife and raising three young children through grief, to unexpectedly falling in love again and searching for meaning in the face of uncertainty. Funny, tender and fiercely alive, Jim’s story will crack your heart open and leave it fuller than before. Much more than a memoir about dementia, this is a story about family, identity and resilience. Above all, it is a reminder that when we have the courage to keep our hearts open through life’s hardest moments, there is always happiness to be found. Gold Coast since 2001 We’ll bring your garden back to life - creating a refreshed space where you can relax and enjoy your tranquil surroundings * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping With spring around the corner and various local garden events and Open Gardens on the calendar, it could be a productive time to source some of the very hard-to-find flowering gems. One of these is Dombeya, a genus of around 200 species and worth seeking out. All but twenty Dombeya species are found growing naturally only in Madagascar and its surrounding islands, where some have been listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List as Critically Endangered. The rest are found on continental Africa, and are generally widespread. With large, sometimes maple-shaped foliage covered in a velvety surface, Dombeya are a perfect backdrop for their stunning flowers. Putting on a show for winter, Dombeya ianthrotricha can be grown, with support, as a climber, or as a sprawling ground cover or low shrub. The clustered flowers are bell-shaped, an unusual reddish-pink, dusted with golden pollen on the edge of the petals. With similar flowers and foliage, Dombeya cacumium ‘Winters Joy’ is a large tree with exceptionally large, smooth foliage. The stunning flowers, also dotted with pollen, become almost translucent in sunshine. Planted as a lawn specimen, it provides a shower of hot pink on the grass as the flowers drop! In its natural habitat in Madagascar, the native Malagasy people crushed and beat the fibrous bark, using it as fibre for cloth weaving. Also flowering through winter are white and pink forms of D. burgessiae, a more compact, multi-branched tree that can be pruned as a medium shrub. The flowers have a slightly sweet fragrance. Known as the Pink Ball Tree, Dombeya wallichii is a medium bushy tree with very dense, ball-shaped clusters of flowers and is the parent of some outstanding cultivars. Just a sample of this wonderful Genus, and worth a spot in the garden after assessing the planting location, which should be free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. In the early growing phase add organic fertilisers and keep it moist through the summer months. In many societies, record‑keeping systems were built around men because property, inheritance, and legal authority typically passed through the male line. As a result, documents such as land deeds, tax rolls, and court records often listed only male heads of household, leaving wives and daughters unnamed or described only in relation to a man. Marriage traditions also contributed to the loss of information. When women adopted their husband’s surname, their birth identity effectively disappeared from many records, making it difficult to trace them across life events. In some regions, church registers listed only the father at baptisms or recorded a bride simply as “spinster” without noting her or her parents. Death records might identify a woman only as “wife of” or “widow of,” offering no independent details. Social norms further limited documentation. In cultures where women could not own property, sign contracts, or act legally on their own, they generated fewer official records. In some places, women were not counted individually in a census or were grouped under a male household head. These gaps force genealogists to rely on indirect clues, making the reconstruction of women’s lives far more challenging. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. As the wife turned around she was surprised to discover that her husband had gone missing. She was annoyed because they had a lot to do, so she called him on the mobile and asked him where he was. In a quiet voice he said, “Do you remember the jewellers we went to about five years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we couldn’t afford back then, and I told you that I would get it for you one day?” The wife choked up and with a lump in her throat and a tear in her eye, said, “Yes, my darling, I do”. He replied, “Well, I’m in the pub next door!”

Husband: “Scientists say men speak about 10,000 words a day, while women speak around 20,000” Wife (from the kitchen): “That’s because we have to repeat everything.” Husband: “What?” So I saw an old dude with a fishing rod outside my local bar, fishing in a puddle. He looked so sad and cold. I said to him, “Come in for a drink and get warm.” As we sipped our double whiskeys, I thought I’d humour him. I asked, “How many have you caught today old buddy?” He took another sip, riased his glass with a smile and replied, “You are the 8th!!” My husband recently called an old engineering buddy of his and asked what he woas working on these days. He replied that he was working on “aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium, and steel under a constrained environment.” He was impressed - until he learned that his buddy was actually just washing dishes with hot water under his wife’s supervision! 19 By the end of a long family lunch, Margaret was exhausted. She’d followed the conversation - mostly - but keeping up had taken everything she had, and by dessert she’d quietly stopped trying. Those around her had begun to wonder if her memory was “starting to slip.” In fact, the trouble started somewhere she’d never have thought to look: her ears. If Margaret’s story sounds familiar, you’re in good company. As our hearing changes - often so gradually we don’t notice - the brain quietly picks up the slack, working harder to fill in the sounds it can no longer catch clearly. And that effort comes at a cost. Think of your brain a little like a phone with too many apps open at once: run enough in the background and everything slows, and the battery drains far faster. When hearing fades, so much energy goes into decoding speech that there’s less left for remembering, concentrating and enjoying the moment. Here’s what most people are never told: struggling to follow conversations isn’t only an ear problem - it’s a brainworkload problem. Research now counts untreated hearing loss among the most significant things we can actually do something about to help protect our memory as we age. The encouraging part? Easing that load helps. Well-fitted hearing aids don’t simply make life louder - they make listening easier, freeing the brain to spend its energy on the conversation, not the effort of catching it. But the device is only half of it: it’s the careful fitting and the ongoing support along the way that turn hearing aids into lasting help - which is why we stay alongside you well beyond the first appointment. Because we’re independent, we start with you, not a product on a shelf. Sometimes the answer is a hearing aid; sometimes it’s simply knowing where you stand. If conversations leave you drained, or loved ones are repeating themselves, it’s worth a proper hearing check. Book online or call 07 5619 3007 - no pressure, just a clearer picture.
