In 1983, a movie was released called “The Big Chill”. The plot focused on a group of “baby boomers” (people born between 1946 and 1964) who attended the Uni in Michigan, then reunited after 12 years when their friend Alex passed way. The storyline had its own single strength with some amazingly funny actors all flashing back to their 1968 characters. “The Big Chill” subsequently snared three Academy Award Nominations - and at the 8th Toronto International Film Festival, easily won the People’s Choice Award. The 10-song soundtrack from the film blitzed the charts, and within 15 years, sold 6 million albums. It’s rumoured to have revived not only fond memories, but exposed some great old back catalogue of the nervously smiling record companies - thus the tag “Celebrating the Soundtrack that Saved Motown”. More songs were added to re-releases, up to 19 great hits. This night, at the Redlands Performing Arts Centre, the soundtracks were the self-supporting entertainment. The performance is known as “The Big Chillout”. All originally recorded music between 1962–1971, but delivered fresh and sparkling live on stage. Cleverly rotating the songs, matched both vocally and theatrically to the artists, were Asabi Goodman, Rebecca Muino and Judah Kelly. I suspect variety played a factor, however it was clear to the audience these singers were delivering their finest in each power ballad and needed a quick breather in-between. Not only did the audience sing along but loudly expressed astonishment at the emotions smoothly wrapped around the words. You’ll want to be deliberately lost in a world time almost forgot for a couple of hours. Some stand-out tracks, all played by live musicians on stage, were “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” - Aretha Franklin, “Dancing in the Street” - Martha and The Vandellas, “My Girl” - Smokey Robinson and the Temptations, and "What's Going On" – Marvin Gaye. Easily you could go three times to “The Big Chillout” - just try to make it at least once, it’ll bring “Joy To The World”, so Three Dog Night sang.
