2 The human brain acts as an extraordinary control centre, facilitating a myriad of tasks, from simple acts like recalling the location of car keys to more complex endeavours such as conducting online banking transactions. Around the clock, we depend on our brains to navigate the challenges of daily life. Crucial to optimizing brain function and sustaining clear thinking throughout the day is the maintenance of a healthy, wellbalanced diet. Embracing a diet rich in nutrients becomes a potent strategy for supporting cognitive functions. As we progress through life, it's natural for our cognitive abilities to encounter challenges with age. However, this presents an opportunity to prioritise and enhance our cognitive wellbeing. Now, more than ever, it is imperative to fuel our minds with nutrient-dense foods that not only invigorate our thinking but also contribute to the preservation of precious memories. To promote brain health, consider the following foods which are packed with nutrients that can significantly enhance brain power. Low Glycemic (GI) Carbohydrate Foods: Glucose serves as the primary fuel source for the brain, and the rate at which carbohydrate foods are broken down affects blood glucose levels. Opting for low GI carbohydrate options, such as whole grains, certain types of rice, most vegetables and fruits, and legumes, ensures a gradual release of glucose, providing a steady and sustained fuel source for the brain. Combining these with lean protein sources and vegetables at lunch can combat the common afternoon brain slump. Foods Rich in Omega-3s: Given that 60% of the brain is composed of fat, healthy fats containing omega-3s play a vital role in building brain and nerve cells. Oily fish like tuna and salmon, as well as avocado, walnuts, and flaxseed oil, are excellent sources of omega-3s, offering benefits not only for brain health but also for the heart. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO): EVOO, rich in omega-3s and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, contributes not only to cognitive function but also to heart health, gut health, and immunity. Integrating EVOO into daily cooking and meal preparation, whether drizzled over salads or used in marinades, provides a flavourful and healthful addition to the diet. Foods Rich in Vitamin C: Vitamin C plays a crucial role in brain health, influencing tasks such as attention, focus, working memory, decision speed, and recognition. Fruits like kakadu plums, cherries, oranges, and vegetables like broccoli and kale are high in vitamin C, emphasising the importance of a varied fruit and vegetable intake. Water: In addition to fat, water is a significant component of the brain. Adequate hydration supports optimal blood flow, nutrient transport, and waste removal from the brain. Maintaining hydration, with a recommended starting point of up to 2 litres per day, is fundamental for overall brain health. By incorporating a diverse range of low GI carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, omega-3s, EVOO, and staying well-hydrated, individuals can not only nourish their bodies but also provide the essential nutrients required for optimal brain function and memory retention, ensuring they never misplace their car keys again. 6 My Aged Care Home Care Packages: What You Need to Know When it comes to your My Aged Care Home Care Package, it is important to know that it is not a ‘one size fits all’ service. In fact, how you choose to spend it, may differ vastly from the next person, as not all of us have the same needs. The great thing with this, is that you have choice and flexibility in the way it is used, ultimately providing the aged care services and support that is right for you. Support and Services With your My Aged Care Home Care Package, you have various support and service options to choose from. There really is no ‘right’ way to allocate your My Aged Care Home Care Package, but it is essential that your care program is custom-made to help you achieve your lifestyle requirements. At Home Care Assistance, we can help guide you through the process of utilising your My Aged Care Home Care Package efficiently, to ensure your health, home and wellbeing needs are met, while providing you with the assurance and option to live safely and independently at home, as you age in place. Time Waits for No One Once you have been assigned a My Aged Care Home Care Package, you are allocated a referral code to give to your selected home care provider. At this juncture, it is important to know that your referral code is only valid for 56 days – there is no time like the present! Don’t wait. Start your research as soon as you receive your home care package approval to avoid unnecessary delays and unwanted stress. Researching in-home care for a loved one ageing in place can be overwhelming, not to mention challenging when it comes to deciding what’s best for your family. The relationship with your home care provider is an important one, which makes it all the more imperative to compare at least two to three home care providers before settling on the one that meets all your requirements, and has the best offering. For most families, in-home care is the best option, as your loved one can stay in the comfort of their own home, while continuing to live as they have, but with the additional support of professional in-home care assistance. There is a Difference Choosing an in-home care provider for the first time can be tricky, with many assuming that they are all the same. They aren’t. When it comes to selecting the best in-home care services for a loved one, the importance of a reliable and experienced in-home care provider is paramount, and here are just a few of the questions you need to be asking: • Are they a government approved provider of home care packages? • Are Care Professionals employed by the company directly or are they contractors? • What level of training do their Care Professionals receive? • What are the package management/administration fees? • Can you contact someone 24 hours 7 days a week if there is a problem or concern with care? • Do they charge an exit fee? Support of an in-home care provider like Home Care Assistance, can bring enormous benefit and comfort to your quality of life while living independently at home. Home Care Assistance has viable solutions when it comes to supporting independent living. For more information, get in touch with us on 5528 1643. THE WOMEN by Kristin Hannah From the worldwide bestselling author of The Four Winds, The Nightingale and Firefly Lane (a Number One series on Netflix), The Women is a story of devastating loss and epic love. It is both an intimate portrait of a woman coming of age in a dangerous time and a story of a nation divided by war. It would be the journey of a lifetime . . . ‘Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path. As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause. The Women is the story of one woman who goes to war, but it shines a light on the story of all women who put themselves in harm’s way to help others. Women whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has been all too often forgotten. A novel of searing insight and lyrical beauty, The Women is a profoundly emotional, richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose extraordinary idealism and courage under fire define an era. 10 Frangipani’s are making a colourful splash this summer. There’s a rainbow of flower colours and lovely lush green foliage. As trees they make great shade, and the smaller varieties can be kept fairly bushy with a bit of careful pruning. One enemy of Frangipani’s is rust! The leaves are prone to a specific rust fungus Coleosporium plumeriae which causes brownish/yellow pustules. It often starts after rain or during humidity and worsens as the summer months extend into autumn. It is worth inspecting your Frangipani regularly in order to start control early. If the yellowish pustules are spotted early it may be possible to effectively control with careful plant hygiene. Remove rust affected leaves and pick up leaves from under the tree. These fungal spore covered leaves are not for the compost bin! Wrap them and put in with the garbage. There are specific fungicides that target Frangipani rust, and a quick browse of labels at the garden centre or hardware store will show the diseases that each is registered to control. There is a highly concentrated organic potassium bicarbonate and also a copper Gardening by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant Frangipanis based fungicide which are also useful. Alternatively there are stronger systemic fungicides that are absorbed into the plants system. A healthy tree is less likely to fall prone to disease. Frangipani trees prefer slightly acidic, fertile free draining soil, pH around 6 to 6.5. They flower best in full sun (but will grow in part shade, sometimes with reduced flowering.) Once established they don’t require great amounts of water, the roots should be kept cool with a light application of mulch kept well away from the trunk. Regular applications of seaweed soil conditioner will help strengthen cell walls to aid in disease resistance and organic fertilisers will keep your tree healthy. Prune them to shape, but first stand back and assess the shape required. Use a sharp pruning saw and cut away from a branch join to promote wider branching, or flush with the branch join to prevent branching and promote height. Try to make the cut slightly angled to the ground so water runs off to avoid disease entry points. Frangipani’s are a beautiful symbol of summer and are very long lived. There are specimens still around which were planted well over a century ago. Look after them and they will reward you. 0417 294 778 A Touch of Grass Garden Care GARDEN CLEANUPS / REJUVENATION & MAKEOVERS A SPECIALTY We offer an experienced, professional and reliable service Call Jeremy on ... 11 So, maybe it’s time for you to consider a walker? Our clients tell us a similar story when they look at purchasing a Walker to assist them when they go shopping or mixing in the community. Do you use the Shopping Centre’s shopping carts to support yourself so you can mobilise up and down the aisles to make your purchases? If so you should consider the time has come for this aid. This is but one of the many tales we hear, along with reaching for support within the home so you don’t have a fall. This brings us to why should I have one? If you had a fall what would be the repercussions to you? If you were unfortunate to fracture a hip as a result of a fall, the outcome as we age is not good, and you could possibly lose your independence and ability to take care of yourself. So, what type of Walker do you select that suits your needs and is right for you? Walkers come in a huge variety of makes and models, but they all achieve the same result for you the end user. If you are looking at your first Walker, it is hard for someone to know which one is right. Issues to consider are, where am I going to be using the Walker the greatest percentage of time, inside or outside, who is going to be lifting it to put into a car, are you going to use it for walking exercise, when walking how far can you go before you need to have a sit down to recharge your battery? These are just some of the considerations you need to think about A walker that someone gave you that belonged to someone else is not a good thing to consider. Why? Is the seat too low, do the brakes work properly, are the wheels wobbling, are the brake cables flopping around? These are all trip/ fall hazards. Walkers come with different seat heights, seat widths, handlebar height and most importantly weight. A basic walker will weigh around 7.5kg, be of Zimmer design with either 6inch or larger wheels. The larger the wheel the easier it is to push. Weights of walkers range from around 4.5kg up to 10kg for a larger walker for specific needs. A lot of people have the misconception that a carbon fibre walker is the lightest you can buy and the best. Not so I’m afraid. Most carbon fibre walkers come in around 6kg+ and can cost $600-800. One of the lightest Walkers available weighs 4.5kg and sells for around $450, a marked difference. At Scooters & Mobility we have an extensive range of Walkers suitable for all, so drop in and see our trained staff to identify what Walker best suits your needs. We will set the walker up so it is adjusted correctly for your needs. You are purchasing a medical device so there should be no GST and the item needs to be Therapeutic Goods Approved (TGA). 12 DRIVE QUEENSLAND North Stradbroke Island is the second largest sand island in the world and located just one hour from the Coast. It is the perfect destination for a getaway and more than suitable for a self drive tour. Unlike other sand islands, Straddie – as it is affectionately known by the locals – is easily accessible with a conventional vehicle as the townships are networked with bitumen roads. The island is renowned for its natural beauty and there are a diversity of beautiful spots, pristine beaches and National Parks. Book your car on to the vehicular ferry for a 45-minute trip from Cleveland to North Stradbroke Island. On arrival at Dunwich, the first excursion into nature is only a five minute drive away. Brown Lake is located 4 kms east on the Trans-Island Road. Around the edge of the lake are walking trails from which different types of native wildlife in the surrounding bush land can be spotted. It is also suitable for swimming and has amenities. From Dunwich it is only 5 kilometres along East Coast Road to Myora Springs, which is located on the left hand side of the road. These springs have been a source of fresh water for thousands of years and still have an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding forest. If you are a nature lover and feeling a little more adventurous you shouldn’t miss Blue Lake. Blue Lake is located 8.5kms from Dunwich but the lake itself is only accessible by foot or 4WD. A 5.2 km return walk from the car park will take you to the lake. Keep an eye out for wildlife and don’t forget to bring your swimmers. Just make sure you are carrying enough water with you as there are no facilities at the lake or car park. Amity Point, which is 8.5km from Dunwich, is a quaint little fishing village. It is popular with families, fishermen and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the mainland. After continuing back to the main road it is another 6.5kms to Point Lookout, the holiday destination of the island. The “Point” is only 4kms in distance with East Coast Road being the link between all the accommodation, attractions and beaches. From Dunwich, it is 18km to Point Lookout. The North Gorge headland walk is a must do at Point Lookout. The walking track offers spectacular views across the South Pacific Ocean and is the perfect spot for viewing abundance of marine life that frolic in the waters off the headland. Turtles, dolphins and manta rays can be seen all year round, with the Humpback Whales making an appearance from June to November. There are several beaches at Point Lookout, however the two that are patrolled are Cylinder Beach and Main Beach and both are popular with surfers, swimmers, sunbathers and fishermen. A trip to North Stradbroke Island would not be complete without a visit to the famous Straddie Pub now known as the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel Spa Resort. CALL SOMEONE WHO CARES! Custom made aesthetically designed natural looking dentures that you can wear with a confident smile. DENTURES DIRECT TO PUBLIC Registered with the Dental Board of Australia & Australian Dental Prosthetist Assoc. Ltd How often should I have my denture checked? If you currently wear removable dentures of any kind, it is advisable that you have these checked regularly. It is recommended if you have any remaining natural teeth you should have these and your dentures reviewed every six months or as directed by your dental professional. If you have no natural teeth and wear removable full dentures, your dentures should be reviewed at least every two years. Why does my denture need to be relined? The rapid shrinkage of bone following extractions means the denture will soon need to have the fitting surface relined once that shrinkage has slowed down enough, approximately six months post extractions. This can vary depending on the individual. After a reline, patients report a much better fit. This relining maybe done between three and six months after an immediate denture has been fitted. Your dentist will advise you when an immediate denture is ready to be relined. Relining involves an additional fee, but this is going to be cheaper than a new set of dentures and it is often very much appreciated. All dentures lose their fit through natural changes within your mouth. Chewing gum, biting your nails or grinding your teeth can accelerate this. You should see your dental professional yearly for a denture check, when refitting or relining may be necessary. For example, many patients report that their full dentures are loose after a period of rapid weight loss. The program which began in 2008 started with just nine workshops and 560 participants and has expanded significantly in 2022-23 to 236 workshops and 17,913 participants. When the program started there were 6580 trees planted in the first year, which increased to 52,834 last financial year. With workshops booking out quickly, the City is exploring options to expand NaturallyGC’s workshops. “NaturallyGC is celebrating 15 years connecting the community with the environment and increasing public understanding of the Gold Coast’s natural environment,” said Mayor Tom Tate. “Over the next decade, the City of Gold Coast is dedicated to taking further measures to restore our environment and protect our wildlife. Community involvement is an integral part of making that happen.” Suggestions for more nature-based recreation opportunities included guided hikes, kayaking tours, snorkelling, nature art courses and environmental education. NaturallyGC currently includes nature photography, nocturnal wildlife spotting, monitoring fauna populations, kids’ wildlife encounters, research, rescue and rehabilitation programs, koala tree planting and indigenous culture experiences. “The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most biodiverse cities with over 3000 native animal species and around 2500 native plant species – there is so much to explore and discover,” Acting Mayor Gates said. “NaturallyGC gives people an improved knowledge of the environment as well as a sense of achievement and the chance to be out and about making new friends.” Along with community involvement, external environmental partners play an integral role in delivering the NaturallyGC workshops each year. 2022-23 NaturallyGC program achievements: - 236 NaturallyGC educations workshops held - 99 Citizen Science and Landcare activities - 17.913 NaturallyGC and Landcare participants - 52,834 trees planted - 4845 volunteer hours contributed - 49 environmental partners

16 Embracing Freedom: The Liberating Benefits of Owning a Mobility Scooter In a world that constantly evolves, so should our approach to inclusivity and accessibility. Mobility scooters, once relegated to a niche market, are now emerging as powerful tools for enhancing the quality of life for individuals with limited mobility. Beyond the convenience of moving from point A to point B, owning a mobility scooter brings forth a multitude of benefits that contribute to personal freedom, social engagement, and overall well-being. First and foremost, mobility scooters provide a sense of independence that is often compromised by physical limitations. Whether due to age, injury, or disability, individuals facing mobility challenges can regain a measure of control over their daily lives. Unlike traditional wheelchairs, scooters offer a more comfortable and userfriendly alternative, allowing users to navigate various terrains with ease. This newfound freedom fosters a positive mindset, as individuals can actively participate in social activities, shopping, and outdoor adventures without the constraints of limited mobility. Moreover, the social benefits of owning a mobility scooter are profound. The ability to move freely encourages increased social interaction, reducing feelings of isolation and dependence. People who may have once felt confined to their homes can now participate in community events, visit friends and family, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll in the park. This not only enhances their own mental wellbeing but also enriches the social fabric of communities by fostering inclusivity and diversity. In addition to the personal and social advantages, owning a mobility scooter contributes to a more sustainable and ecofriendly lifestyle. These electric-powered vehicles produce zero emissions, making them an environmentally conscious choice for transportation. As society becomes increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability, embracing mobility scooters aligns with the global commitment to reduce our carbon footprint. The benefits of owning a mobility scooter extend far beyond the convenience of personal transportation. These devices empower individuals, enabling them to reclaim their independence and actively engage in the world around them. By fostering inclusivity, promoting social connections, and contributing to environmental sustainability, mobility scooters emerge not just as tools of mobility but as catalysts for a more vibrant, interconnected, and accessible society.
