27 Russell Morris: The Real Thing MUSIC Review The last 90 years saw advancements in the record industry. Recordings were made so audiences could play at any time, what they first heard live on radio. Everything in the early days was recorded live, often using as few as four mics available. Singers would crowd around one microphone to get harmonies perfect. Other mics were dedicated to particular important instruments, and the rest just had to battle through to be heard, cutting direct onto an acetate disc. Decades later, recording industry started using multiple-track recording onto magnetic tape. Recording of sessions could be done at different times, on different days on the same songs. For example, the single track “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys took an exhausting 9 months to produce at three different studios back in 1966. Artists and their studios could now become creative, releasing recordings beyond previous imagination. From Labels busily exposing artists in the pre -70s, emerged an amazing blend of great writing, mixing and talent. One of them was Russell Morris. We were, as kids, amazed by the cacophony of sounds coming from awesome tracks that he sang, especially “The Real Thing”, at double the length of the normal pop song of the time. Fast forward to 2023. Russell Morris is on stage in the Brisbane Convention Centre with a massive orchestra. An experimental concert idea originally encouraged and backed by Clive Palmer. Reproducing what was originally recorded live in Melbourne - without overdubs - and again played live at the Sydney Opera House.
