Visual changes and hearing problems are the two most common changes, both of which can make communicating and being involved in social situations difficult. This can lead to social withdrawal and can contribute to dementia. The most common cause of visual changes are cataracts. This is not always noticeable, as the two eyes “age” at the same rate. There is no “benchmark” apart from husbands / wives and friends pointing out golf balls, road signs and other objects not seen by the patient. Many think cataracts only cause blurred vision, but they also increase the risk of falling by 3 times, which can result in life threatening injuries, including hip fractures and head injuries. This is because the cataract causes: Poor contrast vision → difficulty seeing steps, curbs, or uneven surfaces Reduced depth → trouble judging distances or perception step height Glare sensitivity → difficulty seeing in bright sunlight or with headlights Blurry vision → making obstacles harder to notice see What is a Cataract? A cataract is the clouding in the lens of your eye (which is located behind the coloured part of our eye (iris)). People commonly notice: • Blurry or dim vision; • Glare or halos around lights (especially at night); • Needing more light to read; • Colours appearing faded or yellow; and • Trouble judging distances or steps. What can you do ? The good news is that cataracts can be removed by a safe and highly effective day surgery which restores vision and depth. Recent studies show that cataract surgery decreases people’s risk of falls and dementia in the 10 years following surgery, by 30%. Don’t ignore visual changes ! See your GP or Optometrist for a referral and the Team of Ophthalmologist at Coastal Eye Surgeons will be able to assess your vision and suggest treatment tailored to you.
