As the Gold Coast edges into that perfect time of year—warm days, crisp evenings and a steady sea breeze—there’s one date locals already have circled: Blues on Broadbeach, returning 14–17 May 2026 for its milestone 25th year. For many, this isn’t just a festival— it’s a ritual. Over four days, Broadbeach transforms into a sprawling, open-air soundtrack, where the hum of everyday life gives way to guitar riffs, smoky vocals and the kind of live performances that stop you midstride. From park stages to tuckedaway bars, music is quite literally everywhere you turn. This year’s lineup is stacked with both international heavyweights and homegrown favourites. Headlining the celebrations are The Teskey Brothers, making their longawaited festival debut, alongside Grammy winner Ruthie Foster and the soulful Robert Finley. Australian talent is equally front and centre, with the unmistakable guitar work of Ian Moss, the high-energy The Bamboos, and crowd favourite Ash Grunwald all set to light up the precinct. Dig a little deeper into the program and you’ll find gems like Grace Cummings, MonoNeon and The Lachy Doley Trio—artists who blur the lines between blues, soul, funk and rock, keeping the festival fresh while staying true to its roots. continued page 4 > Call us on 5529 8253 Find us on Facebook STUDIO VILLAGE COMMUNITY CENTRE 87 VILLAGE WAY, OXENFORD family@studiovillage.com.au • STUDIO VILLAGE COMMUNITY CENTRE • PlaySteps Circle of Security-Parenting • For Caregivers with a child between the ages of 0-3 years • 8 week interactive program • Strong emphasis on play & caregiver-child interaction • Group education to build on family’s strengths & confidence • Meet other Caregivers VCS Inc. partner with Northern Gold Coast Communities for Children to deliver Playsteps, Circle of Security-Parenting and Seasons for Growth. Whether you’re easing into retirement, already there, or simply looking to supplement your income, there are plenty of flexible, low-stress ways to bring in extra money without sacrificing your time. One of the most popular options is pet sitting or dog walking. With so many people travelling in and out of the region, reliable animal lovers are always in demand. It’s a great way to stay active and social, and often leads to regular clients. Similarly, house sitting can provide both a modest income and a change of scenery—ideal if you enjoy variety without the expense of travel. If flexibility is key, delivery driving or local transport services can fit neatly around your schedule. With tourism and events happening year-round, there’s always demand for people who can lend a hand. Those with a spare vehicle might also consider renting out a car or caravan, creating a passive income stream with minimal ongoing effort. For creatives and home-based workers, the Gold Coast’s thriving markets and online platforms offer a fantastic outlet. Selling handmade goods, baked treats, or even quality second-hand items can turn a hobby into a rewarding side earner. Many over-50s are also rediscovering the value of their professional experience, offering freelance admin, bookkeeping, or writing services from home. Hands-on roles remain a reliable choice. Gardening, lawn care, cleaning, and small handyman jobs are always in demand across local suburbs, particularly among fellow seniors who appreciate a helping hand. These jobs often grow through word-of-mouth, making them ideal for those who enjoy building connections within their community. For those with specialist knowledge, tutoring, mentoring, or running small workshops can be both profitable and personally rewarding. From helping students with schoolwork to teaching photography, cooking, or even smartphone skills, sharing what you know is a great way to stay engaged and valued. It’s also worth noting that many of these opportunities can start small and grow over time. A few hours a week can quickly turn into a steady side income, especially when reliability and reputation come into play. The key is to choose something that suits your pace and interests, rather than feeling pressured to take on too much. Ultimately, on the Gold Coast, earning extra income doesn’t have to feel like work. With the right balance, it can enhance your lifestyle—keeping you active, social, and financially comfortable while still leaving plenty of time to enjoy everything the Coast has to offer. Smart Side Hustle Ideas!

Dog attacks remain a serious community safety issue with more than 600 reported to Council in 2025, averaging 54 per month. Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel said responsible dog ownership was key to preventing these serious incidents. “Of the attacks reported to Council last year, a majority occurred outside the home or while the owner was present,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. “Let’s keep the Gold Coast a safe and enjoyable place to live by ensuring dogs are on a leash in public, safely contained at home, and under voice control and supervision in designated off leash areas. “With many dog attacks still going unreported we urge anyone who experiences an incident to report it immediately for the safety of our community.” The new campaign is aimed at preventing dog attacks and reminding residents of tougher penalties brought on by changes to State law. The campaign ‘One bite can cost your dog’s life - Leash. Contain. Supervise.’ will feature across various channels including TV, YouTube, social media and outdoor advertising. “Owners can face hefty fines and potential jail time for serious attacks, with stricter requirements for regulated dogs involved in repeat incidents,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. Suburbs with most reported attacks in 2025: • Southport - 33 • Labrador - 30 • Surfers Paradise - 28 • Nerang - 25 • Pimpama - 24 • Palm Beach - 21 • Helensvale - 20 • Coomera - 18 • Mudgeeraba - 16 • Carrara - 16 • Pacific Pines - 16 • Upper Coomera – 16. In addition to attacks, there were 320 aggressive dog-related requests in 2025, including fence rushing and aggressive behaviour on and off leash. from front cover ... What makes Blues on Broadbeach special, though, isn’t just the lineup— it’s the atmosphere. It’s catching a world-class act by accident while grabbing a drink, it’s dancing barefoot on the grass with strangers who quickly become friends, and it’s the unmistakable buzz that rolls through the streets long after the sun goes down. In a time where many festivals are scaling back, this one continues to grow—fuelled by a loyal local crowd and a genuine love of live music. And in 2026, with a quarter-century milestone to celebrate, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest and best yet. For more information bluesonbroadbeach.com

5 In the realm of vision correction, your optometrist serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path to visual clarity through the selection of suitable eyeglasses. Beyond merely prescribing lenses, they play a pivotal role in aiding individuals in selecting glasses that not only correct vision but also complement their lifestyle, preferences, and unique facial features. One of the primary responsibilities of an optometrist is to conduct comprehensive eye examinations to determine the precise prescription needed for optimal vision correction. This involves assessing various factors such as refractive errors, astigmatism, and potential eye diseases. Armed with this information, the optometrist can recommend the most appropriate lens type, whether it be single vision for near or distance vision, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses for individuals with presbyopia. Choosing the right frames is equally crucial, blending functionality with style to enhance not only sight but also personal aesthetics. Optometrists are adept at guiding patients through the myriad of frame options available, considering factors like face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle preferences. Frames come in diverse styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, minimalist to bold, catering to individual tastes and preferences. Optometrists can recommend specialised lenses to meet specific visual needs. For individuals frequently exposed to digital screens, blue light filtering lenses can mitigate eye strain and discomfort. Those engaged in outdoor activities may benefit from photochromic lenses that adapt to varying light conditions, providing optimal vision in any environment. They can advise on lens coatings to enhance performance and durability. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and reflections, particularly beneficial for night driving or computer use. Scratchresistant coatings prolong the lifespan of lenses, ensuring long-term clarity and visual comfort. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 25 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Visual changes and hearing problems are the two most common changes, both of which can make communicating and being involved in social situations difficult. This can lead to social withdrawal and can contribute to dementia. The most common cause of visual changes are cataracts. This is not always noticeable, as the two eyes “age” at the same rate. There is no “benchmark” apart from husbands / wives and friends pointing out golf balls, road signs and other objects not seen by the patient. Many think cataracts only cause blurred vision, but they also increase the risk of falling by 3 times, which can result in life threatening injuries, including hip fractures and head injuries. This is because the cataract causes: Poor contrast vision → difficulty seeing steps, curbs, or uneven surfaces Reduced depth → trouble judging distances or perception step height Glare sensitivity → difficulty seeing in bright sunlight or with headlights Blurry vision → making obstacles harder to notice see What is a Cataract? A cataract is the clouding in the lens of your eye (which is located behind the coloured part of our eye (iris)). People commonly notice: • Blurry or dim vision; • Glare or halos around lights (especially at night); • Needing more light to read; • Colours appearing faded or yellow; and • Trouble judging distances or steps. What can you do ? The good news is that cataracts can be removed by a safe and highly effective day surgery which restores vision and depth. Recent studies show that cataract surgery decreases people’s risk of falls and dementia in the 10 years following surgery, by 30%. Don’t ignore visual changes ! See your GP or Optometrist for a referral and the Team of Ophthalmologist at Coastal Eye Surgeons will be able to assess your vision and suggest treatment tailored to you. 8 “As communities across Australia and New Zealand navigate increasingly busy, screen-heavy lives, a growing body of research points to a simple, accessible solution for better health — time in nature. This May, Botanic Gardens Week returns for its 11th year with the theme “Where Your Health Grows”, inviting locals to step into their nearest botanic garden and experience the proven benefits firsthand. “ www.bganz.org.au Our Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens is valued as a safe, welcoming space. A walk along its shady paths will leave you feeling refreshed, but don’t forget to pause and look at your surroundings. See the detail, look more closely at plants, listen and notice the insects and hear the birds. Stop off at the Friends Centre and pick up a map before you select your walk. Perhaps follow the main path to the She Oak Grove – pause and listen. Step off the main path and wander along the side trails, including the Story of our Country and Bush Foods Plant Collections, which represent flora important to our First Nation Peoples. Walk among rainforest trees planted in honour of Australian Defence Force lives lost in the Afghan Conflict. Wander down to the Nerang River via more regional trees, and loop back through the Gum Tree Corridor. Based on bark types or regional ecosystems, and like so many of the Plant Collections planted by Friends and the community. Later, discover the Callitris Grove planted by local school children, together with visiting Turkish Artists to mark the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. For a shorter walk from the Friends Centre, head along the northern edge of the Feature Lake through the Friendship Force and Curators Avenue to the Closed Forest Gorge Plant Collection and Fountain. Backtrack and cross the Ring Road to the QE II Jubilee Walk. Fast becoming a favourite for its silent forest track, with some trees dating from the early development of the Gold Coast. Emerging at the heritage Rosser Orchard, walk to the bush steps back to the lake, passing the grand old Blackbutt. Even the shortest of walks in nature will leave you feeling refreshed. Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens is one of over 50 gardens taking part in events celebrating Botanic Gardens Australia New Zealand (BGANZ) Botanic Gardens Week 18- 24 May. Low-key activities, including guided walks and regional native plant sales will be held throughout the week. 10 As we get older, life naturally changes. Our pace might slow, our social circles can shift, and everyday tasks can feel a little different than they once did. But one thing that becomes more important than ever is routine. Now, routine doesn’t mean rigid schedules or boring repetition. It’s really just about having a familiar rhythm to your day—and for many older Australians, that sense of rhythm can make a big difference to overall wellbeing. A Little Predictability Goes a Long Way There’s comfort in knowing what your day looks like. Something as simple as a cuppa at the same time each morning, a walk before lunch, or your favourite tv show in the evening can create a reassuring sense of structure. When life feels a bit uncertain—whether due to health changes, memory lapses, or spending more time at home— these small, predictable moments help reduce stress and bring a sense of calm and control. Keeping the Mind on Track Routine is also great for brain health. Familiar habits help take the pressure off memory, making day-to-day life feel more manageable. Waking up and going to bed at the same time can improve sleep, while regular medication times help avoid confusion. For those experiencing memory loss, even small routines—like a regular morning ritual or a favourite afternoon activity—can provide comfort and clarity. It’s not about strict rules, but gentle consistency. Finding Purpose in the Everyday One of the biggest changes in later life can be the loss of structure, especially after retirement or losing a loved one. Without a bit of routine, days can start to blur together. Having something to look forward to—even small things— can really lift the mood. It might be a daily crossword, tending to the garden, a chat with a neighbour, or a weekly tradition like fish and chips on a Friday. These moments help keep a sense of purpose and connection alive. Eating Well, Made Easier It’s quite common for older adults to skip meals or eat irregularly, often without realising it. Setting regular times for meals or snacks helps keep energy levels steady and supports overall health. It can also turn mealtimes into something enjoyable rather than a chore. Sitting down properly, adding a bit of music, or sharing a meal with someone can make all the difference. Staying Active Without Overthinking It We all know movement is important, but it can be harder to stay motivated. That’s where routine helps again—building small amounts of activity into the day makes it feel natural. A short stroll to the letterbox, a bit of stretching after breakfast, or some light gardening can all add up. When it becomes part of the daily flow, it doesn’t feel like “exercise”—it’s just part of the day. Support That Works With You There’s a common misconception that bringing in help at home takes away independence. In reality, good support does the opposite. The right care professionals work alongside existing routines, not against them. Whether it’s helping with meals, reminders, or simply being a friendly, familiar face, their role is to make daily life easier while keeping things as normal as possible. When Routine Starts to Slip Sometimes, changes in routine can be a sign that a bit of extra support is needed. Things like missed meals, poor sleep, forgotten medications, or losing interest in usual activities are worth keeping an eye on. Catching these early can help get things back on track before they become bigger issues. At the end of the day, routine isn’t about being strict—it’s about creating a gentle rhythm that makes life feel easier and more enjoyable. With more support options now available for ageing at home, it’s never been easier to find help that fits around your day, not the other way around. And with the right balance, routine can help keep life feeling familiar, comfortable, and connected. 12 Healthy Vision Month: Why Regular Eye Checks Matter More After 50 May is recognised as Healthy Vision Month, a useful prompt to pause and check in on your eye health, especially as we get older. For many people over 50, this is the stage of life where eye health begins to change. You may notice more difficulty with night driving, increased glare from headlights, or needing more light to read comfortably. While these changes can be a normal part of ageing, they can also be a sign that your prescription or eye health needs attention. Even if you haven’t noticed any changes, it’s still important to have your eyes checked regularly. Many eye conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic eye disease, can develop slowly and without obvious symptoms in the early stages. “It’s very common for patients to tell us their vision feels perfectly fine,” says optometrist Michael Hare from VISION Michael Hare Eyecare Plus. “But a comprehensive eye examination can reveal early signs of eye disease long before a person notices any change.” An eye examination involves much more than reading letters on a chart. Modern imaging technology allows optometrists to closely examine the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels at the back of the eye. “These technologies allow us to detect subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed, often well before they affect vision,” explains optometrist Jonathan McCorriston. “That gives us the opportunity to monitor or manage conditions before they begin to affect vision.” Many people delay an eye test because their vision feels “good enough.” The challenge is that many eye conditions don’t affect vision until they are more advanced. Importantly, an eye examination doesn’t just assess vision. The eyes can also provide early signs of general health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Having your eyes checked regularly means advice can be tailored to you, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Healthy Vision Month is a good reminder not to wait until something feels wrong. For most adults over 50, an eye examination every one to two years is recommended, or more frequently if advised. If we’re not already your optometrist, we’d like to be. see advertisement page 13 GOLD COAST FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Steps to Creating a Tree As impossible as it is NOT to digress while researching, these basic suggestions are a strong foundation. 1. Work from the present time backwards. You, your parents, grandparents etc. 2. Found a connection on someone else’s tree? Often reference sources when checked are non-existent or unreliable. Check the sources, mentioned family, their relationship and timelines. Don’t assume it’s correct. If possible, contact the author of a record and ask for their source of information. Any queries can then be discussed. When you’re happy with the authentication of a source record it with your notes. 3. Simply ask family, long lost and otherwise for family stories, legends, photos, documents and records. Then based on new information search for records and verification. 4. Follow every trail. Never boring 5. While it can be expensive purchasing records/ certificates, many are free or have a small fee. The information provided is worthwhile by providing conformation and valuable content about an individual and connections to other family members, places or dates that will prove or disprove its relevance to your tree. Read thoroughly. 6. While documenting on paper is an option by the non-computer savvy, consider genealogy specific software to keep order. It will make collating information chronological and consistent. Some software is free and others reasonably priced. Organisation is a must and these programs provide proven systems. 7. Back up, Back up, Back up. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. The priest says, “Sister, I’m sure the Lord would understand if we share the room. I’ll sleep on the sofa, and you can take the bed.” “That sounds perfectly fine,” the nun replies. They say their prayers and settle in for the night. The priest switches on the TV, and the nun takes out her needlework. About ten minutes later, the nun calls out, “Father, I’m very cold.” The priest sighs and says, “Alright, Sister, I’ll get you a blanket from the closet.” Another ten minutes pass. “Father… I’m still terribly cold.” “Don’t worry,” he says. “I’ll get you another blanket.” A few more minutes go by. Then the nun speaks again, this time softly: “Father… I’m still very cold. I don’t think the Lord would mind if, just for one night, we acted as husband and wife…” There’s a pause. “Oh, alright,” says the priest. “Get your own blanket woman, I’m trying to watch the game!” c t i q e n h e u WordWheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel. Answers P 31

15 Have you ever found yourself saying, “I can hear people talking, but I can’t quite understand what they’re saying?” You’re certainly not alone. This is one of the most common early signs of hearing loss—and it can be incredibly frustrating. To understand why this happens, we use a hearing test to measure the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches. Think of it like a piano keyboard—on the left are the low, bass sounds (like a drum), and on the right are the high, treble sounds (like a whistle). It’s important not to confuse pitch with volume: low pitch doesn’t mean soft, and high pitch doesn’t mean loud. The test shows which parts of this sound range you hear clearly, and which parts may be missing. In many cases, people continue to hear the lower-pitched sounds quite well, including vowel sounds like “ah” or “oh.” However, the higher-pitched consonants—such as “f,” “s,” “th,” and “t”—are often reduced or missing. These sounds may be softer, but they carry much of the clarity in speech. Without them, words begin to blur together. For example, “fake,” “fate,” “face,” and “safe” can all sound remarkably similar when those crisp consonant sounds are no longer fully audible. So while speech may still seem loud enough, it isn’t clear. Your brain, however, doesn’t give up easily. It steps in to fill the gaps—working harder to piece together meaning using context, memory, and even visual cues like lip movements. While this is an incredible ability, it comes at a cost. Listening becomes effortful, concentration increases, and over time, many people feel mentally drained after conversations. Social situations that were once enjoyable may start to feel overwhelming, leading some to withdraw altogether. The good news is that this is exactly what modern hearing technology is designed to address. Hearing aids don’t simply make everything louder. When properly fitted by an audiologist, they selectively amplify the specific speech sounds you are missing—particularly those high-frequency consonants—while leaving sounds you already hear well largely unchanged. This restores balance to what you hear, bringing clarity back into conversations. The brain no longer has to work overtime to “guess” what was said. Communication becomes more natural, less tiring, and far more enjoyable again. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re hearing everything you should be, it may be time to take a closer look. Sometimes, it’s not about volume—it’s about clarity. Why is it that I can hear, but not always understand what people say?

The kid was demanding lollies, toys — you name it — and making quite the scene. Through it all, the granddad stayed calm, softly saying, “Easy now, Ethan… we’ll be done soon, buddy.” A few minutes later, another meltdown… “Hang in there, Ethan… just a little longer,” he said, still cool as ever. By the checkout, the kid was tossing things out of the cart, but the granddad didn’t raise his voice once. “Alright, Ethan… relax now, we’re almost out of here,” he said gently. I was honestly impressed, so I followed them out to the parking lot and said, “Sir, I just wanted to say — you handled that amazingly. Staying that calm with little Ethan… that takes patience. He’s lucky to have you.” The granddad smiled and said, “Thanks… but I’m Ethan. That little brat’s name is Jason.”

17 Denture Problems Dentures can be an important solution to tooth loss. Today's dentures, also called false teeth, are not like the ones your grandmother wore. They are more comfortable and natural looking than they were in the past. Still, if you don't take proper care of your dentures, problems can occur. Common Denture Problems If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. You should also only wear dentures that fit properly. Otherwise, the following problems may occur: Gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, dentures that move around in your mouth causing mouth infections. Treating Denture Problems If you have problems with your dentures, see your dental professional right away. Your dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. Here are some ways to treat various denture problems: Make sure your dentures fit. Over time, your gums and bones will change and your dentures won't fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, modified, or replaced by your dental professional. Never try to adjust your dentures yourself. Speak slowly. When you first get dentures, it may be hard for you to say certain words. Be patient. Practice saying the challenging words aloud and speak slowly. If your dentures move around when you laugh or smile, gently bite down and swallow to put them back in place. Check with your dental professional to adjust the fit. Eat soft foods. If you are having trouble eating, follow these tips: • Take small bites of soft foods, such as eggs and yogurt, try to avoid sticky foods, chew your food slowly. When you chew, use both sides of your mouth at the same time this prevents your dentures from moving forward or tipping. Eating will become easier as you get used to your dentures. In time, you should be able to eat most foods. • Use an adhesive. Denture adhesives help your dentures stay in place and make them feel more secure. But denture adhesives should not be used to fix old or poorly fitting dentures. When using an adhesive, follow the instructions carefully. Use only a small amount. 18 NO NEED TO REPLACE YOUR KITCHEN Kitchen Rescue ENJOY THE LOOK & FEEL OF MARBLE prestigebenchtopcoatings.com.au 0422 757 163 ABN 453 739 803 48 FREE QUOTE MarbleCoteTM Benchtop Restoration: Repairs & Resurfacing Stain, Heat & Scratch Resistant 1/5 of the replacement cost Splashbacks: MarbleCote TM to match benchtops Cabinet doors & panels: Repairs & Satin or gloss finish The first question people ask when enquiring about the MarblecoteTM benchtop restoration system is “how does it compare to a brand new factory produced laminate or so-called ‘stone’ benchtop?” The MarblecoteTM system first developed here on the Gold Coast over 10 year ago, has been refined and improved to where we are today. MarblecoteTM is completely seamless (there are no joins). A brand new factory made ‘stone’ or laminated benchtop will have joins sometimes only one or two, often three or four. Does this difference really matter? Well, yes, it does, especially if you want your benchtop to be hygienically superior. A quick question... how many bacteria can fit on a pinhead? Answer... (fun fact) six million. Bacteria includes e-coli, salmonella, Covid and many more. The second most popular place for bacteria to dwell and thrive in the home - after doorknobs - is the kitchen benchtop. And no matter how tight those joins appear to be, to bacteria they are like the Grand Canyon... party central! MarblecoteTM is stain, heat and scratch resistant. Whilst very resilient (finished with three coats acrylic cross-linking polymer), it is not bulletproof. So if someone drops a brick on it (yes, we’ve had that happen!) damage will occur. Unlike other benchtops, damage like that can be repaired in around one hour and the repair won’t be visible. MarblecoteTM is handcrafted so that each benchtop is unique and there’s a three year warranty. Once warranty expires...we also offer a ‘re-fresh’ (light sand plus 2 coats benchtop clear $200) which includes extended warranty for a further three years Cost comparison - the MarblecoteTM System is one quarter to one fifth the cost of a new replacement bench.
