Volunteer Positions Available - NO Age Limit KEEPING YOU AHEAD OF THE GAME: Two-Part Series on Bank Accounts and Estate Planning Part 2: Signatories on Accounts and the Risk of Getting It Wrong In Queensland, many people add a spouse, partner or child to a bank account so that person can help with transactions, pay household expenses or manage banking if illness, age or work commitments make things difficult. It sounds simple. Often, it is not. The common misunderstanding is that if someone can access the account, they must also own the money. In many cases, that is incorrect. An authorised signatory may have permission to operate the account, but does not usually have a beneficial interest in the funds. The money remains the account holder’s asset during life and, on death, will generally form part of the estate to be administered by the executor. That distinction matters. A spouse or partner who has long paid the bills from the account may understandably feel the money is effectively shared. An adult child who has assisted with banking may assume they were “put on the account” as an owner. If the arrangement was only a signatory authority, those assumptions can quickly unravel after death or incapacity. Poorly documented signatory arrangements can lead to disputes about ownership, allegations of undue influence, or questions about whether funds were used properly. In 2026, there are also practical banking issues: stricter identity checks, fraud controls, account restrictions, and delays in recognising attorneys or executors. The key point is simple: authority to sign is not ownership. If an account arrangement was made “just to help”, it should be reviewed alongside the Will and Enduring Power of Attorney. It holds the tangle of old jewellery nobody wears anymore — the broken chain from an aunt's estate, the ring that no longer fits, the earring whose partner disappeared a decade ago. It holds the coins collected on overseas trips, the broken old watch, the bracelet bought in a different chapter of life. Most of us assume these things have sentimental value, or no value at all. What we rarely consider is that they might have real, financial value — sitting quietly while the gold price holds near historic highs. That's where father-son buying duo Mike and Nate come in. Mike and Nate are enthusiastic antique buyers with a particular eye for gold jewellery — broken or intact — gold and silver coins, mechanical watches, military medals, banknotes, and all other kinds of coins. "Everyone has something we want to buy," says Mike, "and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item as we are buying ten thousand." With gold still trading well above traditional levels, now is an opportune time to dig out those old chains, rings, and brooches and find out what they're actually worth. "This is an ideal time to sell," Mike emphasises. "We will buy anything made of gold — old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth. We also need silver in any form, including coins and bars of any size." Don't overlook the coins. That old tin of foreign currency at the back of the cupboard could contain a rarity worth far more than face value. "We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations — bags, tins, folders, however they come," says Mike. "We'll go through them on the spot and give you a fair idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up." Mechanical watches are also in urgent demand. Brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Longines, and even some Gents Seiko’s can command strong prices depending on model and condition — and many people have no idea what a vintage watch sitting in a drawer is currently worth to a serious collector. In today's era of downsizing and decluttering, there has rarely been a better moment to open those drawers, go through those cupboards, and turn forgotten items into real money. Mike and Nate will be in the Gold Coast area this coming month, doing home visits. Call today to book yours. For more details see back cover. In addition to attacks, there were 320 aggressive dog-related requests in 2025, including fence rushing and aggressive behaviour on and off leash. The City has launched a new campaign to highlight the consequences of irresponsible dog ownership, with most reported attacks occurring in public spaces when animals are not properly contained or under effective control. Dog attacks remain a serious community safety issue with more than 600 reported to Council in 2025, averaging 54 per month. Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel said responsible dog ownership was key to preventing these serious incidents. “Of the attacks reported to Council last year, a majority occurred outside the home or while the owner was present,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. “Let’s keep the Gold Coast a safe and enjoyable place to live by ensuring dogs are on a leash in public, safely contained at home, and under voice control and supervision in designated off leash areas. “With many dog attacks still going unreported we urge anyone who experiences an incident to report it immediately for the safety of our community.” The new campaign is aimed at preventing dog attacks and reminding residents of tougher penalties brought on by changes to State law. The campaign ‘One bite can cost your dog’s life - Leash. Contain. Supervise.’ will feature across various channels including TV, YouTube, social media and outdoor advertising. “Owners can face hefty fines and potential jail time for serious attacks, with stricter requirements for regulated dogs involved in repeat incidents,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. Prepping Your Property for a Picture-Perfect Sale Runaway Bay Lions News Story Dogs team Meschelle and ‘Zena’ (Dog breed groodle) First impressions are everything, especially when it comes to selling your home. In today’s competitive real estate market, capturing the attention of potential buyers requires more than just a well-worded listing. It’s about presenting your property in its best light, and that starts with stunning photographs that showcase its full potential. Joe Farr, a seasoned real estate agent with over two decades of experience at Farr Real Estate selling Gold Coast homes, shares invaluable insights on how to get your property ready for a photo shoot that will leave buyers eager to see more. “Photographs are often the first point of contact between a buyer and your property,” says Joe Farr. “They set the tone for the entire viewing experience, so it’s crucial to make sure your home looks its absolute best.” One of the first steps in preparing for a photo shoot is decluttering and depersonalising your space. Remove any personal items such as family photos and knick-knacks, as they can distract potential buyers from envisioning themselves in the home. “You want to create a blank canvas that allows buyers to imagine their own life in the space,” advises Joe. Next, focus on cleaning and organising each room. Pay special attention to high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and bathrooms, ensuring that countertops are clear, surfaces are gleaming, and clutter is kept to a minimum. “A clean, tidy home not only looks more appealing in photographs but also gives the impression that it has been well-maintained,” In addition to cleaning, consider making small cosmetic updates to enhance the overall appearance of your property. This could include freshening up paint, replacing outdated curtains, or adding strategic touches of staging to highlight the home’s best features. “Simple changes can have a big impact on how your home is perceived by buyers,” says Joe. “It’s about creating a sense of warmth and welcoming that invites people in.” When it comes to staging your home for photographs, less is often more. Focus on highlighting the key selling points of each room, such as architectural details, natural light, and views. “You want to create a sense of flow that allows potential buyers to envision themselves living in the space,” explains Joe. “Avoid overcrowding rooms with furniture and decor, as this can make them appear smaller and less inviting.” Finally, don’t forget about street appeal. The exterior of your home is the first thing buyers will see, so it’s important to make a good impression from the moment they arrive. “Investing in landscaping, painting the front door, and ensuring that the exterior is well-maintained can go a long way in attracting buyers,” advises Farr. By following these expert tips from Joe Farr, you can ensure that your property is photo-ready and poised to make a great first impression on potential buyers. With a little preparation and attention to detail, you can set the stage for a successful sale that exceeds your expectations. If you’re getting ready to sell, call Joe Farr on 55 007 007 for a free consultation on how to get the best price for your home. FRONT 4
7 In the realm of vision correction, your optometrist serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path to visual clarity through the selection of suitable eyeglasses. Beyond merely prescribing lenses, they play a pivotal role in aiding individuals in selecting glasses that not only correct vision but also complement their lifestyle, preferences, and unique facial features. One of the primary responsibilities of an optometrist is to conduct comprehensive eye examinations to determine the precise prescription needed for optimal vision correction. This involves assessing various factors such as refractive errors, astigmatism, and potential eye diseases. Armed with this information, the optometrist can recommend the most appropriate lens type, whether it be single vision for near or distance vision, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses for individuals with presbyopia. Choosing the right frames is equally crucial, blending functionality with style to enhance not only sight but also personal aesthetics. Optometrists are adept at guiding patients through the myriad of frame options available, considering factors like face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle preferences. Frames come in diverse styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, minimalist to bold, catering to individual tastes and preferences. Optometrists can recommend specialised lenses to meet specific visual needs. For individuals frequently exposed to digital screens, blue light filtering lenses can mitigate eye strain and discomfort. Those engaged in outdoor activities may benefit from photochromic lenses that adapt to varying light conditions, providing optimal vision in any environment. They can advise on lens coatings to enhance performance and durability. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and reflections, particularly beneficial for night driving or computer use. Scratchresistant coatings prolong the lifespan of lenses, ensuring long-term clarity and visual comfort. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 25 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. QPS officers made an incredible 658 donations during last year’s Lifeblood Drive, earning the title of Queensland’s leading emergency service for blood donations, helping to save countless lives in the process. This year QPS officers are determined to continue the friendly rivalry with other emergency services and together, contribute to the good cause. Senior Constable Darin Carruthers has been in the QPS for 36 years and having attended many frontline emergencies, knows just how critical blood can be to save lives. He has the rare blood type of AB negative, which he shares with about one percent of Queensland’s population. “Every blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives so by participating in the drive I’m helping to keep other Queenslanders safe,’’ Senior Constable Carruthers said. First-year constable Amber Johnson, 22, was nervous about being a first-time donor but was pleased she could contribute and wants to encourage community members to give blood as a simple, but powerful way to help others. “As a QPS officer, helping people is at the core of what I do every day, so taking part in the Emergency Services Drive is another way I can help outside of my frontline duties,’’ Constable Johnson said. “Being a first-time donor has been a positive experience, and it feels rewarding knowing that such a small act can make a real difference to someone’s life, and I hope to continue to donate regularly.’’ To find out more about giving blood, visit the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood website at www.lifeblood.com.au to find your nearest donation centre.
