3 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In our fast-paced lives, filled with digital screens and constant visual stimuli, it’s easy to overlook the significance of maintaining good eye health. However, regular checkups with an optometrist are not just a precautionary measure; they are essential for preserving the precious gift of sight and overall well-being. One of the primary reasons to prioritise optometric check-ups is the early detection of potential issues. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. An optometrist can detect these conditions through comprehensive eye exams, allowing for early intervention and effective management. Timely diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to the eyes and, in some cases, even save one’s vision. Moreover, optometrists are equipped with the expertise to address refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While it might be tempting to rely on over-the-counter reading glasses or online prescriptions, these solutions may not adequately address the unique visual needs of each individual. Optometrists tailor prescriptions based on a thorough understanding of the patient’s eye health, ensuring optimal vision correction. Regular eye check-ups are particularly crucial for children, as undetected vision problems can hinder their learning and development. Children may not always express vision concerns or even recognise them, making routine optometric visits essential for identifying and addressing potential issues early on. Good vision is integral to a child’s academic success and overall well-being. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. 4 Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch It has been memorable start to the year given the tornado that barrelled through last month and record rain falls. Further disruptive weather can be expected according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The Firees, who attended our last meeting, have warned that El Niño may still lead to periods of exceptionally hot weather when our district will be at greater risk of fires. Tall grass and dead wood from the tornado add to the risk. Please ensure that your property is protected, cut back and remove flammable vegetation and detritus from storms to a safe area away from your property. Always ensure there is easy access to your property for the Firees. In addition, we need to consider those in our neighbourhood who are more vulnerable. Reaction to the tornado demonstrated the excellent work from volunteers, ensuring the more vulnerable are safe and cared for. It is useful to maintain contact numbers for those in your street who may need assistance if adverse conditions arise. We all need to maintain a ‘survival-kit’ in this challenging period. A further fire hazard arises from recharging lithium-ion batteries. Extensive damage to property has occurred in the past year. Those at most risk are young adults, tradespeople, and families with older teens. Warnings include never charging in direct sunlight, avoid charging on flammable surfaces, avoid over-charging, and when leaving home always switch off all charging devices. Great news that the QPS have launched an active stolen vehicle public portal allowing the public to play a crucial role in assisting police in tracking down car thieves; dozens of stolen cars can be viewed on the website. Click on www.police.qld.gov. au/stolen-vehicles for more information. This initiative will assist the police in locating stolen vehicles; an important step in returning property to victims and holding perps accountable. Information online includes the make, model, colour, registration number and suburb from which the vehicle was stolen. A search function enables you to identify the registration and confirm if a suspicious vehicle has been stolen. QPS are keen to empower our community and hope to benefit from our continued vigilance. The public can interface with QPS at a number of levels. For areas of concern contact Policelink using the online suspicious activity form at www.police.qld.gov.au/reporting, or call 131 444. Alternatively report crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers either on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersqld.com.au. As always, a serious threat should be reported by calling Triple Zero (000). Cybercrime remains an increasing problem. Please remember that if you experience a scam, report it to the ACCC via Scamwatch – visit www. scamwatch.gov.au. We were reminded of the opportunistic youth in action seeking out those less vigilant and forgetting the ‘lock it or lose it’ warning. There was suspicious activity in our neighbourhood over the weekend, but we were pleased to note that barking dogs and blazing security lights proved to be a suitable deterrent. Our next NHW event will be on the 14th of May 2024 with a 7.00 pm start, location at the Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. We will welcome our community Police Officer, our new local Counsellor, and our State member for Parliament. As always, we will close with a raffle and light refreshment to ensure a stimulating evening. We Look forward to welcoming you. Now is a fantastic opportunity to turn those unwanted items into cash. “We are keen buyers, especially of the items listed on our advert (see back page). Everyone has something we want to buy, and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item, as we are buying 10,000!”, says Mike Cornish, chief buyer for the company. The buyers will be in a convenient location in the area very soon (see back page). If you are in doubt about any items you wish to sell, take them in for an instant appraisal. Especially wanted by the buyers are any gold jewellery items, broken or not, antique jewellery, collectables such as military medals, old coins and banknotes, and mechanical watches. Gold and Silver still at high prices With the gold price still at higher than traditional levels, right now would be an opportune time to go through the jewellery box and dig out those old gold chains, rings and brooches and turn them into cash. Mike says, “Now is a great time to sell. We will buy anything made of gold – old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth! We also need silver in any form, including cups, cutlery, old coins, even teapots and the like.” Old coins can toss up a rarity Check those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations. We will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up!” Rolex and mechanical watches wanted Mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer, and Longines, just to mention some. These brands can command good prices depending on the condition and model. In any event we will buy any mechanical watch, even if it’s only a few dollars for parts,” says Mike. “If you are unsure, bring any watches to us at the venues to have them appraised,” he said. Whilst we have a Covid safe environment at the venues, we also offer home visits for those unable to come to us. See our advert for home visit slots and get in touch to book yours in. 6 The City wages war on mosquitoes with $1 million pledge The City has waged a war on mosquitoes, pledging an additional $1 million to the mosquito treatment program to tackle the escalating issue across the Gold Coast. The recent rain has provided ideal conditions for mosquito breeding and as such City crews have ramped up these activities and will continue them for the foreseeable future. Mr Baker said the additional resources will be used to purchase more all-terrain vehicles and trailers, increase our aerial program, and continue our drone trials. “We have dedicated all possible resources to getting this situation under control, and will continue to prioritise this work as we know it is a priority for our community right now,” Mr Baker said. CEO Tim Baker said as well as fogging and aerial treatments our pest management teams would be checking and treating all known mosquito breeding areas throughout the City every day until the situation had eased. “We know the mosquito breeding has ramped up over the past month and with little respite from the rain and humidity, this will be an ongoing problem,” Mr Baker said. “We are committed to reducing numbers through our programs but we can all do our bit to reduce numbers and keep ourselves and families safe from these pests. “Residents can help reduce mosquito numbers by emptying all containers that can hold water following rain.” He said some of the less obvious places to look include in the water reservoir of self-watering pots, in some plants and on top of rainwater tanks. Locations where mosquito treatments are taking place can be found at the City’s alerts page here: http://news. goldcoast.qld.gov.au/alert-section. You can protect yourself from mosquitoes by: • Limiting your time outdoors around dawn and dusk • Applying mosquito repellents regularly • Wearing loose fitting, light coloured protective clothing when outdoors • Screening doors and windows or using mosquito nets or air-conditioning. • Using mosquito coils. You can help prevent mosquitoes breeding on your own property by: • Disposing of all water-holding containers in your yard • Emptying flower vases, pot plants and other containers which hold water, at least once a week • Ensure house gutters are kept free of leaves and they drain freely, leaving no pools of water in low points • Screen all openings to tanks, wells or other large water containers with wire gauze, not coarser than 1 millimetre aperture mesh. 10 Prep Time | 10 Minutes Cooking Time | 10 Minutes Quesadillas are a versatile appetizer (or dinner!) — we used corn and capsicum here, but feel free to swap out and in whatever combination of cheese and vegetables you prefer. These are a great finger food to serve at parties. • 1 x 400g tin tinned sweet corn • 1 x capsicum • 1 x red onion • 1 ½ cups grated tasty cheese • 8 soft white round wraps • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 avocado • ½ cup tomato salsa • ½ cup sour cream Heat the grill pan over medium-high heat. Drain the corn and place in the large mixing bowl. Cut the 4 sides and the base off the capsicum and place in the food processor. Peel and quarter the onion, and place in the food processor. Blitz until finely chopped. Add to the corn in the mixing bowl. Stir through the cheese. Brush some oil on the grill plate. Place 2 wraps on the grill and top each with ¼ of the corn mixture. Spread to about 2cm from the edge. Top each wrap with a second one, and brush with oil. Using an egg flip and tongs if necessary, carefully turn the whole round upside down and cook for a further minute. Remove to a chopping board and cut into 6 pieces with a pizza wheel or sharp knife. Repeat with the next 4 wraps and filling. Divide the quesadillas between four plates. Halve the avocado and run a knife through the flesh to create slices within the skin. Scoop out with a spoon and divide between the plates. Top with a dollop of salsa and sour cream, and serve.
