Sometimes during these routine checks your veterinarian will hear a murmur. What is a murmur? A murmur is an abnormal sound to the heartbeat as blood passes across abnormal heart valves or across abnormal structures within the heart. These can either be congenital (at birth) or acquired (not present at birth) and has developed a degenerative change to the valve structure. What tests are needed to diagnose/investigate? 1. Chest radiographs are useful in assessing the size of your pets heart, or if there is any fluid on the lungs requiring diuretics. 2. Echocardiography is a heart ultrasound to enable us to see your pets heart beating in real time which enables a more specific diagnosis. What should I keep an eye out for at home? Measuring your pets respiratory rate whilst deeply asleep, checking for how many breaths per minute (how many times the chest moves up and down). If your pet starts coughing, then this may be respiratory or cardiac in origin. Cats don’t generally cough as a result of heart failure, but dogs frequently do if they develop fluid on their lungs. If you are concerned about your pets heart and would like a consultation please give Pimpama City Veterinary Surgery a call on 07 5670 971. 10 • 1 cup plain flour (all purpose flour) • ▢1 cup rolled oats • ▢1 cup desiccated coconut, unsweetened • ▢3/4 cup white sugar , preferably caster / superfine • ▢150g unsalted butter • ▢4 tbsp golden syrup • ▢1 tsp baking soda (bicarbonate soda) Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (160°C fan forced). Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Mix flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl. Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium high heat and stir until butter has melted. Add baking soda and stir to combine - it will fizz up, this is normal. Immediately remove from heat. Pour butter mixture into flour and mix until just combined. Roll level 1 tablespoon mixture into balls, flatten into patties. Place balls, 2.5 cm apart, on prepared trays. Bake for 15 minutes or until deep golden. (Bake 12 min for chewy biscuits!) Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool - they harden as they cool! ANZAC BISCUITS Anzac Biscuits are a cherished treat in Australia, adored for their rich buttery caramel taste, satisfying crunch, and the ease of their recipe—not to mention the profound historical significance they hold. These biscuits are traditionally baked by Australians in honor of ANZAC Day. The acronym “ANZAC” refers to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day, observed on April 25th each year, is a solemn day of remembrance for Australians, commemorating the anniversary of the initial significant military engagement undertaken by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War, a battle marked by substantial losses. Legend has it that soldiers’ wives invented the original Anzac Biscuits, carefully choosing ingredients that would ensure the biscuits remained edible over the long journey to their husbands abroad. The original versions were reportedly so tough that soldiers sometimes ground them into porridge. Prep: 15min | Cook: 15mins | Makes 16-18 Congratulations February Winners! $50 GIFT CARD SUDOKU: L. April is National Heartworm Awareness Month FIVE FACTS ABOUT HEARTWORM DISEASE THAT WILL SHOCK YOU ... It’s everywhere! Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in Australian states. They look like spaghetti. Mature heartworms look like long strands of spaghetti. Dogs are more susceptible. Dogs can have hundreds of heartworms in their bodies. We need to act fast. In most cases, the treatment often comes too late to cure the animal fully. Decreased appetite might be a sign. If your cat or dog is not eating well, it might indicate heartworm disease. Heartworm disease, a perilous condition affecting both cats and dogs, is caused by a parasitic worm dwelling in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Its insidious presence can lead to severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to vital organs in these beloved pets. Dogs are a host of heartworms, meaning they can grow and reproduce in the animal, while cats are a dead-end host, meaning the worms cannot reproduce in the animal. Most cats are infected with only a few worms and may not be fully mature, though the disease can be just as deadly for cats as it is for dogs. Transmission of heartworms occurs through mosquitoes, which acquire larvae from the bloodstream of infected dogs during feeding and subsequently transfer them to other animals. Once transmitted, these larvae develop into adult worms, perpetuating the cycle of infection. Preventative measures are paramount, including monthly oral medications that target immature worms. Strict adherence to preventive schedules is crucial, as heartworm larvae can mature rapidly, rendering prevention ineffective within as little as 51 days. Detecting heartworm disease early is pivotal for successful treatment. While dogs may exhibit symptoms such as coughing, fatigue, decreased appetite, and weight loss, many remain asymptomatic initially. Regular blood tests are indispensable for diagnosis, preferably during routine veterinary visits. However, detecting heartworms in cats proves challenging due to the low worm burden and absence of definitive symptoms. Antigen and antibody tests, supplemented by imaging techniques like x-rays and ultrasounds, aid in diagnosis. Treatment for heartworm disease in dogs necessitates a multifaceted approach. Upon confirmation of diagnosis, strict activity restriction is imperative to mitigate further damage to the heart and lungs. Stabilizing the dog’s condition may be requisite, particularly in cases with underlying health issues. Treatment protocols typically involve several steps, followed by post-treatment testing to ensure complete elimination of parasites. Unfortunately, effective treatment options for heartworm-infected cats are lacking, underscoring the critical significance of preventive measures. In conclusion, heartworm disease poses a grave threat to the wellbeing of companion animals, emphasizing the need for proactive prevention, early detection, and appropriate treatment. Consultation with a veterinarian is indispensable to tailor preventive strategies and ensure timely intervention in cases of infection, safeguarding the health and longevity of cherished pets.

13 Peachey CG News PRESIDENT MIA’S TIP Harvesting Pumpkins.. Look for a pumpkin that sounds hollow to tap, has a dried curly vine near the stem and then cut it off leaving quite a bit of the stem attached. This helps to preserve the pumpkin. When stored in a dry, cool place pumpkins can be preserved anywhere from 3-8 months. When you start to use the pumpkins, collect the seeds, wash them and dry them for next year’s seeds or wash them, coat them in oil, add salt, your favourite herbs and spices and roast them in oven. A delicious snacks to add to salads, sprinkle on soups or anything that needs a crunchy spice kick. Pumpkins seeds are rich in zinc, are anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. They’re a great flavour addition to any dish. WHAT TO GROW THIS MONTH FROM MIA During the 1st quarter after the new moon: is the best time to plant our leafy vege. I’d be putting in the brassica family, broccoli, cauliflower and kale, lettuce, and flavoursome winter herbs like dill, coriander and the staples like chives and spring onions. During the 2nd quarter of the rising moon: is the best week to plant your fruity vege. Easy ones are your beans, broad beans, yummy sweet peas, chilli’s and tomatoes. After the full moon: when the moon starts to descend, is the best week to plant your root vege. My pick to plant is beetroot, carrots, leeks, onions and now is a great time to plant your garlic. I remember hearing a saying about planting your garlic in the ground by Mother’s day and harvest on Remembrance day 11/11. Home grown garlic is amazing. Since garlic grows from cloves, find some organic cloves, place the cloves in the fridge to break their dormancy, soak overnight in seaweed solution then plant pointy end up, in good sunny spot with loose free draining, friable soil. Mark their positions and keep weed free as garlic hate competition. Put your garlic in the fridge today! KID’S CORNER To celebrate all the women role models in our lives, let’s create a living gift in a pot, we’ve got time for Mothers Day. Imagine a tea garden pot, herb garden pot, fragrant flower garden pot, a favourite colour pot or even a low care succulent garden pot. The kids will enjoy asking mum about her favourites from the garden or they may want to inspire mum with more fresh herbs or greens to use in cooking. Establish a theme, grab a pot/ container of any shape size, with holes in the bottom. Fill with a good quality potting mix to suit your mini themed garden. Fill with either saved seeds, seedlings, cuttings from the garden or friends and neighbours, add some little features like mini fences made from twigs glued together, decorative rocks, tree branches sawn into little stumps or anything fun to create interest in the pot. If you just sow seeds it’ll be fun for mum to watch as the garden evolves into something pretty or edible. Anything goes and give a special lady a living gift. COMMUNITY SHARE CHEST is on site at Peachey. This is a service of a community pantry for all if you are passing by drop in and take a look. Grab something for your drive or grab something for someone else. Gifts of nonperishable food and small household items are welcome. HERB OF THE MONTH WITH ANNEMAREE Herb / salad greens for the month - Ceylon/ malabar spinach . This rich green spinach grows happily in gardens with moist soil. The more moisture available to it, the bigger the leaves. Leaves will grow the size of a dinner plate with a little shade. Preferably grow under a tree. Will climb. Great for balcony gardens in pots for an ongoing spinach all year round. This spinach originated in India, contains mucin, fibre and protein as well as your vitamins A, B’s and C. Including calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and iodine. The young tips and leaves can be picked and added to salads, sandwiches, used as a garnish or served with a dip.
