19 Burleigh Heads & Miami Senior Citizens Club commenced on 7th July 1976 with a small group of local residents who met regularly in their homes. They were extremely keen to establish a facility where seniors could come together, enjoy social activities and improve their lifestyle. Several years later, the Club had raised sufficient funds to hire the Catholic Parish Hall in Burleigh, where regular meetings and activities were held. With private funding raised by the Committee, support from Council and a 99-year lease of land at 42 Matilda Street, Burleigh, plans were drawn up in 1982 by Mr Cec Maher for the construction of a hall. The hall was completed in 1984 and is where the Club continues to operate today. The Club now has more than 200 members and provides five funfilled activities, including Indoor Bowls, Cards, Trivia, Line Dancing and Table Tennis, all operating at various times throughout the week. New members aged 50 years and over are warmly welcome to participate in any of the activities once they become a member. Membership is currently just $1 for the year, with each visit costing $3, which includes morning or afternoon tea. Membership also includes the opportunity to attend the Club’s complimentary Mid-Year and Christmas lunches, providing members with a great chance to catch up and enjoy some good company. Maher Hall is also available for hire. The hall has reverse-cycle airconditioning and ample parking, making it a convenient venue for a range of functions and activities. The Burleigh Heads & Miami Senior Citizens Club continues to provide a friendly place for seniors to meet, make new friends and enjoy a variety of activities in a welcoming social environment.
