19 It was their 41st delivery of their “The Robertson Brothers 1960’s Variety TV Show” this year, this one in Toowoomba’s historic art deco Empire Theatre, restored in 1997. A different Variety 60’s styled show than previously performed – again - outrageously successful. Tonight the “Boomer Awards” were part of the gentle satire humour which accompanied music, set in a mock live TV studio on-stage. A poke at the way life was: The clothing, the jingles and commercials, the culture that came with the massive hits. The Robertson Brothers harmonies, (as real brothers Geoff, Ben and Stuart) are solid and dynamically sonic - a result of decades in the industry. They have toured nationally, and around world supporting ELO, America and John Denver. Joined by Dieter Kleeman who has worked with the likes of Leo Sayer, Glen Shorrock, and Doug Parkinson, the sounds are as what you would expect from this humble world class guitarist. Cosimo De Vito, a beautiful Western Australian who appeared in 2003’s Australian Idol now joins the team this year and sings selected ‘60’s songs such as Dionne Warwick’s “Say a Little Prayer” and Cilla Black’s “You’re My World” and of course lots of others. Find yourself believing you are in his presence, transported back in time, reliving the emotion of each of his songs. Mark Shelley is simply brilliant in his characterisation of Roy. He not only has the vocal range and tone to honour his songs, he also has the sensitivity and artistic ability to ‘be’ Roy. Orbison’s life was littered with personal tragedy and career highs and lows. His wonderful resurgence in popularity in the late ‘80s through his legendary ‘Black & White Night’ Concert, solo album Mystery Girl, and the formation of the Supergroup The Traveling Wilburys, was a fitting final chapter for such a creative genius. Hear all your favourite songs… Only the Lonely, Running Scared, Sweet Dream Baby, Candy Man, Blue Bayou, In Dreams, Anything You Want, Crying, Working for the Man, Penny Arcade, Pretty Woman and many more. Music Review The Robertson Brothers Empire Theatre Toowoomba | 16th August 2025 Simon Brook-McLachlan whose high vocal register allows for some amazing versions of pop hits, fits comfortably into even more of the “harmonic brotherhood” with Ben, Stuart and Geoff. The professionalism entertaining us with the Beatles, Beach Boys, Everly Brothers and so many more, was nothing short of epic. The audience reaction to these music-inspired “TV Variety Shows” was always one of what movie producers hoped for: The Suspension of Disbelief. Of course, it’s not a real TV Studio – but it IS for tonight - because perception is king for a few hours. If the clapping, laughter and interaction could be interpreted from this wide aged audience, it would say “How I wish I could go back in time and quarantine the future.” The Robertson Brothers got the formula right.
