4 The city’s community champions have been recognised for their outstanding work to enhance safety on the Gold Coast at an awards ceremony recently. Fight 4 Youth, Senior Police Liaison Officer Darwin Huang and the Gold Coast Youth Service Foyer Program were among those recognised for their contribution to the city at the biennial Safer Suburbs Awards held at HOTA. Mayor Tom Tate said these awards were a reminder of the strength of the Gold Coast community and the commitment we share to making it a safer city. “This year we had a total of 40 nominees across the three categories, and of such high calibre that it was difficult to choose the winners,” he said. “And when you take a close look at what these programs are achieving, for some of our most vulnerable residents, it’s important we take a moment to thank them and recognise their efforts.” The Safer Suburbs Awards is one of many City initiatives enhancing safety with commitments to expand the Safety Camera Network, increase the number of publicly available defibrillators and enhanced graffiti reduction programs. The Safer Suburbs award winners are: Meritorious Award - Fight 4 Youth - Through a proactive early intervention model Fight 4 Youth engages young people to address the underlying causes of disengagement, crime, and antisocial behaviour. By integrating therapeutic mentoring and physical activities the program equips participants with practical tools for selfregulation, resilience, and positive decision-making. Designed to re-engage high-risk youth, the program focuses on hands-on learning, building trust with mentors, and fostering real-world connections. Committed to removing barriers, Fight 4 Youth offers free programs, flexible delivery options, and culturally safe practices – filing critical service gaps, reducing the risk of crime and empowering young people to become future leaders and mentors. Individual award - Darwin Huang - As a Senior Police Liaison Officer Darwin brings cultural knowledge and multi-lingual skills to assist the Queensland Police Service. In her own time, Darwin supported the establishment of Queensland E Watch to deliver critical information to the Chinese community including crime prevention strategies, government updates and police alerts. The platform fosters positive perceptions of safety, connection and belonging, while ensuring vital information is communicated. Project or initiative - Gold Coast Youth Service Foyer Program - Since 2021, the Gold Coast Youth Service Foyer Program has enhanced the safety of young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The program provides 40 self-contained units and 24/7 on-site support through a ‘hand up, not a handout’ approach. Since opening, over 100 vulnerable young people have been supported, providing not only a home, but a foundation for a brighter future based on empowering them to take ownership of their lives. Group Award - Youth Outreach - Youth Outreach plays a pivotal role in fostering a safe and connected community by supporting young people aged 16 - 25 who are experiencing or at risk or homelessness. In addition to providing housing, the organisation offers wraparound case management, life skills training, and tenancy support. By addressing key areas such as health, education, and social inclusion Youth Outreach helps young people confidently transition into adulthood.
