2 Spending time with family and friends not only can be fun, but research also shows it benefits your mental and physical health. Dr. Craig Sawchuk, a Mayo Clinic psychologist, agrees that socialising is key to good health. Socialising is good for your mind and body. “We are social animals by nature, so we tend to function better when we’re in a community and being around others,” Dr. Sawchuk says. He adds that people who spend a lot of time alone, such as older adults or new mums, may have an increased risk of depression and lower quality of life. You don’t have to be supersocial to see benefits of connecting with others. “Just being able to shoot the breeze about certain things, anything really, can be a very, very positive type of thing,” Dr. Sawchuk says. Socialising not only staves off feelings of loneliness, but also it helps sharpen memory and cognitive skills, increases your sense of happiness and well-being, and may even help you live longer. In-person is best, but connecting via technology also works. Risks of distancing yourself from social activity Social, psychological and medical research has now demonstrated conclusively that there is a direct correlation between the degree to which a person feels connected to others and their physical and mental health. Some commonly known effects from not feeling connected to others: • Generally decreased feeling of vitality, less energy and feeling tired more often • Greater likelihood of chronic illness such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. • More frequent bouts of sickness, such as colds or flu, and longer recovery times • Longer recovery times from injury • Regular feelings of loneliness • Increased likelihood of depression • Decreased level of happiness and satisfaction with life in general • Shorter life spans Feeling lonely and isolated common among older adults It is estimated that among those aged over 65, between 5%-16% report loneliness and 12% feel isolated. Studies show that acute loneliness and social isolation can impact gravely on wellbeing and quality of life, with demonstrable negative health effects. Some reasons that might make you feel lonely or isolated: • Geographic isolation • Feeling lost in the crowd • Lack of close family ties • Living alone • Difficulties in meeting new people due to access issues, an introverted personalities, or feeling like you don’t belong • Losing a loved one or friend through death or relocation • Feelings of loss or grief • Poor physical health, frailty, mobility issues • A mental health condition such as depression or anxiety • Fear of rejection from others or feelings of being “different” or stigmatised by society • Inability to participate in activities due to access issues, mobility, illness, transport • Retirement from work, home relocation, starting out in a new role or community • Lack of purpose or meaning in life • Language or cultural barriers, or reduced connection with your culture of origin How loneliness and isolation can affect your health Being lonely has a significant and lasting negative effect on blood pressure and is associated with depression (either as a cause or as a consequence). Feeling alone or socially isolated for a long time can be harmful. You might experience physical or mental problems or do things that are bad for you. Below are some signs stemmed from isolation and/or loneliness to look out for: • Physical symptoms – such as headaches, feeling ill, having pains, feeling tired, having sleep problems or lacking motivation • Mental health conditions – such as depression, feeling anxious, having panic attacks or feeling paranoid • Low energy – tiredness or lack of motivation • Sleep problems – difficulty getting to sleep, waking frequently or sleeping too much • Diet problems – such as putting on weight, losing weight or losing your appetite • Negative feelings – such as feeling worthless or hopeless or thinking about self-harm • Substance abuse – such as drinking a lot of alcohol, misusing medicines or taking drugs Four ways to help overcome isolation and loneliness The fact that loneliness feels so uncomfortable is a reminder to pay attention to and nurture these relationships that can further your happiness. No matter how many people are around you or in your life, depression can still bring loneliness. There are a few simple activities that will help avoid loneliness and isolation and improve your life. Start by: • Connecting with family and friends – visit, phone, email or use video technology • Getting out of the house – go shopping, church, exercise, join a club or enrol to a class / study • Volunteering – meet new people to feel connected and valued • Getting a pet – pets are great conversation starters. They can improve your physical and mental health Risks of distancing yourself from social activity

Denmark, 1589. Princess Anne is betrothed to King James VI of Scotland - a geo-political royal marriage designed to forever unite the two countries. But first, she must pass the trial period: one year of marriage in which she must prove herself worthy of being Scotland’s new Queen. If the King and the Scottish royal court find her wanting, she faces disgraced and permanent exile. Determined to fulfil her duties to King and country, Anne resolves to be the perfect royal bride. Until she meets Lord Henry. By her side is Kirsten, her loyal and pious lady’s maid. But whilst tending to Anne’s every need, she has her own motives for the royal marriage to be a success . . . On the other side of the border in North Berwick, a young housemaid by the name of Jura is dreaming of a new life. With an abusive master and a soured relationship with a young farmer’s son, she secretly practises the charms taught to her by her mother. When the tension reaches breaking point, Jura makes a run for it: to Edinburgh. But it isn’t long before she finds herself caught up in the witchcraft mania that has gripped the capital, and her freedom and her future are on the line. Enter To Win BOOK GIVEAWAY Twilight Transitions: Navigating Dusk and Dawn on the Gold Coast Roads As the soft hues of dawn and dusk paint the Gold Coast sky, the transitioning light can transform our familiar roads into a canvas of challenges for drivers. In this month’s editorial, we’re shedding light on the art of driving during these beautiful yet potentially tricky times of day. The Serenity and Peril of Dusk and Dawn There’s undeniable tranquillity in starting or ending your day with a drive as the sun flirts with the horizon. However, the low light levels during these hours can cause visibility issues for drivers. Our eyes are constantly adjusting between the fading or emerging daylight and the increasing reliance on artificial lighting from streetlights and vehicles. Driving Safely with the Sun At Spotto Driving School, we emphasize the importance of defensive driving techniques tailored for these twilight hours. We advise drivers to: - Use headlights to increase visibility, even if the sun hasn’t fully set or risen. - Watch for pedestrians and cyclists who might be less visible during these times. - Be alert to wildlife activity, particularly in the less urban areas of the Gold Coast where animals are more prevalent. The Illusion of Empty Roads Dusk and dawn often give the impression of less traffic, leading to a false sense of security. We stress the need for constant vigilance - other road users may also be struggling with visibility, and their reactions might be less predictable as a result. Educational Empowerment Driving education doesn’t stop after you pass your test. It’s an ongoing process that adapts to your experiences on the road. Spotto Driving School’s advanced lessons cover the strategies for handling the unique challenges presented by these transitional light conditions, ensuring that you're as confident driving at these times as you are during the day. A Community Effort for Safer Roads Safe driving at dusk and dawn isn’t solely the responsibility of individual drivers. It’s a collective commitment to road safety. We encourage all members of our community to take these simple steps to heart. Together, we can ensure that the beauty of our coastal city’s sunrise and sunset is matched by safe and serene travels. Join Spotto Driving School in Championing Safe Twilight Driving As we continue our educational journey, Spotto Driving School remains dedicated to empowering drivers with knowledge and skills for all driving conditions. We’re here to guide you, not only under the midday sun but also in the quiet allure of dawn and the soft glow of dusk. Stay safe, Gold Coast, and remember that with the right approach, every moment on the road can be as secure as it is scenic.

6 We do Home Care Assistance differently... We believe home is where the heart is, and our heart is in providing high quality care, without compromise. We are distinguished by the calibre and responsiveness of our team and our expertise in live-in care. It all starts with a chat - Sit down with us and talk about how you want to be cared for in the golden years of your life. We understand that we’re all different as we age – Some of us deny our age so that we can continue to live our vibrant social lives, others like to relax and take stock of our lifetime of memories, and then there are some who like a balance somewhere in the between. At Home Care Assistance, a big part of how we are different to other government approved providers, is that we take the opportunity to understand you, so that we can handselect a team of carers and nurses who’ll best suit you. We don’t subscribe to the notion that ‘one model of care fits all’, which is why we make it all about you. We provide a high level of personally tailored care, in the comfort of your own home. Our dedicated team of skilled healthcare professionals are able to support and assist you in keeping your dignity and comfort as you age well. We offer complete 24 hour 7 days a week on-call support and care from our trained carers and nurses, across many levels of care. Based on the care you require, we offer domestic assistance, meal preparation, social support, personal care, transport, palliative care and cognitive therapeutics. At Home Care Assistance, we believe your homecare package is yours, not anyone else’s. It travels with you through your home care journey, with whichever provider you choose. We are transparent in the ways we conduct ourselves – you’ll find no hidden fees here. We strive to provide as much value to you as possible, so that the care you want stretches as far as it can. Whether you’re trying to make sense of the new world of care you’ve found yourself in, or looking for a provider who champions your care rather than the lining of their own wallets, Home Care Assistance Gold Coast will be there to help guide you. Call our friendly team today on (07) 5528 1643, to discuss how we can help champion the way you age well. Alternatively, stop into our centrally located Southport office at the 30309/9 Lawson Street, Southport. Home Care Assistance Gold Coast is a Commonwealth Government Approved provider for home care packages. See advert page 7 GOLD COAST FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Analysing Documents Correctly Often we come across documents in our research that can be interpreted in different ways. The information may be inconclusive, obscure or contradictory. Making sure we analyse this correctly is paramount to building an accurate tree. For example, many death certificates contain incorrect information because the informant (usually noted on the document) may not have the right information. The names of the deceased’s parents are often incorrect – particularly the mother’s maiden name. Your job is to interpret this information when comparing it to other records and in particular the birth certificate. That document is more likely to be correct however before compulsory registration even these were often deliberately misrecorded. A child born to a young, unmarried, mother was often recorded as being born to their grandparents to make the situation more ‘acceptable’. If, during your research, you find a child born to unusually elderly parents long after that couple's last child, the above may apply. By checking the supposed sisters of that child you may establish the true mother. DNA would then be the most likely way to establish that the supposed father is a grandfather. This scenario is a perfect example of why it is important to include immediate family in your research. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. 10 Reprogram The Age Of Your Skin Your DNA holds the key to your unique identity and, as it guides the processes of aging, it also shapes the outward appearance of your skin. As time passes, our genes express themselves differently, influenced by a myriad of factors including health, environment, nutrition, sleep, stress, and lifestyle choices. The skin, being the body's largest organ, undergoes a perpetual cycle of renewal, with fresh cells constantly emerging from its deepest layers. However, as agingrelated genes become increasingly active, the skin's structure and appearance undergo noticeable changes. Traditionally, altering this genetic aging process seemed impossible. Yet, the advent of Forever Young Broadband Light has shattered this perception. This revolutionary treatment harnesses light energy to penetrate deep into the skin, stimulating the body's natural defences against aging and effectively reversing the hands of time. A groundbreaking 10-year study conducted at Stanford University showcased the transformative power of this technology. Participants underwent regular Sciton BBL treatments, resulting in the activation of hundreds of genes associated with youthful skin, while those linked to aging were deactivated. Astonishingly, when shown before and after photos, doctors accurately assessed the participants' ages beforehand, but consistently perceived them to be 11 years older in the post-treatment images. The implications are profound. By adhering to a regular annual or biannual treatment regimen, individuals can diminish the long-term signs of aging such as sun damage, spider veins, redness, fine lines, and wrinkles. For further information on this remarkable breakthrough and other rejuvenating treatments, we invite you to contact Aura Mediclinic at Ashmore City Professional Centre. Research shows that older Australians want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. However, the home that was suitable and easy to live in in our younger years can become a prison as we manage the diseases and ailments that come with ageing. The good news is that there are options, including downsizing into more age-friendly accommodation. 7 YEAR WARRANTY No need to leave your home Ready to walk on in 4 hours Minimal mess, noise & disruption FREE QUOTE CALL LYNN 0407 898 795 DRUMMY TILES? TENTING TILES? LOOSE GROUT? Tile Injection: The EASY Solution Many older people opt to adapt or modify their house to their changed needs. Modifications vary from major changes, such as installing a chair lift and making more room for wheelchair access, to more simple access features such as replacing steps with a ramp or installing safety railings. You may qualify for government financial support to modify your home. Details can be found here - https:// www.myagedcare.gov.au/aged-care-services/changes-tomy-home. However, the need to modify your home may not become obvious until a crisis, such as a fall or illness, by which time it could be too late. Need for easy self-assessment Researchers have confirmed many older Australians are living in homes with clear hazards and limited accessibility as they age, but few are addressing these challenges properly. A Flinders University study found a key reason for the poor planning is a lack the information to properly assess safety risks. It found decision-making around home safety could be compromised by a lack of awareness, inadequate access to information, and the sudden onset of age-related changes. The findings are likely to inform Federal Government changes to the current Commonwealth Home Support Programme (and Home Care Packages), which are likely to begin in 2025. Most participants in the study accepted the ageing process and could recognise hazards and potential risks. However, others were determined to remain independent at home and resistant to making future changes until necessary. “They were all interested in obtaining more information about how to improve home safety or services to support ageing in place,” Associate Professor Kate Laver said. “This shows we need tools that enable older people and their families to properly self-assess their own homes. This tool would be available both in hard copy and as a digital tool and will be used to promote and support future planning,” she said. The National Disability Insurance Scheme could provide a model for the development of a selfassessment home modification tool that is relevant to older people and their families. An example of such a selfassessment tool is available here - www.homemods.info source: nationalseniors.com.au

15 Denture Problems Dentures can be an important solution to tooth loss. Today's dentures, also called false teeth, are not like the ones your grandmother wore. They are more comfortable and natural looking than they were in the past. Still, if you don't take proper care of your dentures, problems can occur. Common Denture Problems If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. You should also only wear dentures that fit properly. Otherwise, the following problems may occur: Gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, dentures that move around in your mouth causing mouth infections. Here are some ways to treat various denture problems: Make sure your dentures fit. Over time, your gums and bones will change and your dentures won't fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, modified, or replaced by your dental professional. Never try to adjust your dentures yourself. Speak slowly. When you first get dentures, it may be hard for you to say certain words. Be patient. Practice saying the challenging words aloud and speak slowly. After last call, the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity, in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started the car, switched the wipers on and off; it was a fine, dry summer night, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little, and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, and promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said, "I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken." "I doubt it," declared the man with pride. "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."
