City seeks to recognise disaster recovery heroes The search is on for the community heroes who stepped up to help others after severe weather events struck the Gold Coast. Mayor Tom Tate said the Disaster Recovery Hero Award was created to recognise community members who helped others recover from the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 severe weather events and Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025. “Gold Coasters have shown their strength in how they have come together and helped each other out following both these severe weather events,” Mayor Tate said. “The support shown and the powerful ways people helped each other is one of the reasons I’m incredibly proud to be a Gold Coaster. “Recovery is about more than just the initial clean-up – it is also about ensuring environment, economy, infrastructure and the community’s health and social wellbeing are built back better and made stronger. “We are stronger together and that has helped us through the recovery process. “This award celebrates those everyday people who gave their all to help the community recover and shown the unwavering spirit of the Gold Coast.” Gold Coasters are being urged to nominate a Gold Coast local community member or group who showed outstanding dedication and community spirit following these severe weather events. Residents are urged to show how “we are stronger together” by telling the story of their disaster recovery hero and nominating them for the award. The award is open to community groups and individuals who are residents of the Gold Coast. Nominations close on 8 July 2025.
