DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF ENTRIES, WE HAVE ANOTHER DOUBLE PASS TO GIVE AWAY! Saturday 26 July @ 8.00pm | Twin Towns Way back, some 72 years ago, Norman Gimbel took a short Mambo-Bolero song “Who Will It Be” and discarded the extremely depressing Spanish lyrics. He freshly penned English words about a man’s dancing partner’s power to sway him in other “more romantic” ways. Ultimately this new song, updated and labelled “Sway”, became for Dean Martin in 1954, a significantly successful standard. Key entertainers (who possess the capability) include it in their repertoire. Like Canadians Diana Krall and Michael Bublé. And yet another Canadian born, Australian adored sensation – the handsome Man from Snowy River, Tom Burlinson. Those ‘Great American Song’ standards made famous by Dean, Frank, Sammy and so many recent others were crammed into his 94 swingin’ minutes. Unarguably Tom Burlinson delivered a power-packed concert. His 12-piece band comprised of the cream of Australia’s musicians, many of whom are Queensland locals. They left no gap in their coordinated timing, no wasted notes and absolutely nothing short of recording studio quality. Like a great Aussie BBQ, they sizzled hot until they were well done. Astonishingly, these old musical numbers are so very satisfying, so familiar and yet so refreshing. Rebirthed with newer arrangements and carefully tweaked to entertain without straying from the original tune, they become multigenerational – I guess in many ways a bit like Tom. A man of many authentic backstories and hugely respected industry-wise. For example, back in 1991, Tina Sinatra (does that surname ring a bell?) cast Burlinson as the voice of the young Sinatra in a mini-series she produced on her father’s life, the Golden Globe Award-winning “Sinatra”. Tom intrigued us with a story about Peter Allens rendition of a 1945 song. The unbelievable irony was Dale Genner played “The More I See You” on Peter Allens’ white grand piano right there on stage, given to Twin Towns. Toms voice is strong, precise and melodic - at the same time flexible and above all, swings. Like crazy. Such an enjoyable time with a happy person who connects with his audience, signs his latest CD, “Latin Serenity” and partakes in handshakes and selfies. The time went all too quickly.
