21 Music Review Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, Burleigh Heads | 2nd November 2025 Dave Graney has been described by some in the radio and entertainment industry as a bohemian intellectual music artist and author, as eclectic and eccentric, and an enigma on electric strings. It would seem many are still trying to nail a label firmly on him and his music to best define this iconic Australian artist. Maybe it’d better to accept his music in whatever form each day brings, instead of putting a perimeter fence on the boundaries they think they’ve discovered. Dave Graney transcends the record company categories - which must be frustrating for them (*insider knowledge) and they resort to the one catchall phrase: “He’s an Indie Artist”. Years ago, it was a sticky slur. Synonyms for unsuccessful and weird. How wrong they were. The very essence of “being different” made Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes magnetically attractive to music buyers who were done with hygienically filtered Top Pop 40 hits. Fortunately, rebellious radio outlets like Triple J and 4ZZZ, who had no problem with alternative undercurrent music and specialist programming, gave Dave extra exposure. Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is a top venue in the industrial backblocks of Burleigh Heads. Go find it, it’s a bit of loose secret, but not for much longer as it’s a preferred location with top groups who can truly relax and get close to their audiences. The vibe is both vibrantly live and coastally chilled. Sunday night with Dave and a full clubhouse equated to our happy place. First Set featured songs from the early album. “The Soft ‘n’ Sexy Sound” referencing the 1997 ARIA award winning Artist and his video. The night had all the feel of a West Coast surf sound, a Fender Strat creating dreamy reverbed longlingering chords and a meandering Doors-like Fender Rhodes vibe: Hippy, trippy 70’s with the grunt of the 90’s - played now in ‘25. The second Set had his rocky repertoire filled with intellectual lyrics overlaid on complex chord and rhythm shifts. Can’t get “Deep Inside my Head” out of my head. Irony in its highest form. Top night. www.davegraney.com Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson | Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography) Presented by: Craig Bodinnar Don’t miss this 10 Piece Powerhouse band featuring internationally acclaimed artists who faithfully recreate the dynamic live performances of: The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha and The Vandellas, The Four Tops, Fontella Bass, The Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson and many more MOTOWN Legends.
