2 It is a generally accepted fact that when we head out on the town to spend on goods or services, we want to have a fun time and be treated with respect. Whether we are buying a coffee or a new fridge, none of us want to face patronising attitudes and backs turned against us. Yet that has been the experience of many older Australians as customers in retail and hospitality venues. National Seniors Australia’s latest research report, Experiences of Ageism in Retail and Hospitality, showcases written comments by 130+ Australians aged 50 or older about being ignored or poorly treated as customers in shops, bars, and cafes. The comments were written in response to a question in the 2024 National Seniors Social Survey, in which older Australians were asked whether they had experienced exclusion or discrimination based on their age. The 1000+ people who said ‘yes’ described many and varied forms of discrimination and exclusion, which we fully reviewed in our 2025 report on the question, Elements of Ageism 4: Experiences of Exclusion and Discrimination. But people’s experiences in retail and hospitality settings stood out as worthy of special attention. This is an under-appreciated form of ageist exclusion that needs to be addressed. We therefore created this targeted report so that people in the retail and hospitality industries can read about the problem in older Australians’ own words. Not a trivial problem The consequences of ignoring an older customer or serving them last may seem small to the person doing it. Being left behind happens to us all once in a while, as upsetting or infuriating as it may be. But when it beyond ignoring older customers: “I have been treated as if I was an old nuisance by some workers in the deli section of a shop.” “Often get treated by young service providers with disdain. Being almost shouted at when I ask someone to repeat what they said.” Calling out ageism When this kind of exclusion happens more to older people than younger people, it is clearly ageism – a pattern of discriminatory behaviour based on age. It is illegal. Treating someone differently because of their age contravenes the Age Discrimination Act 2004, whether in customer service or anywhere else. If a shop or food outlet discriminates against you because of your age, let them know through their customer review channels, including social media. Sometimes people are unaware their attitudes or actions are ageist until it is pointed out to them. By the same token, if you feel that a business has done a great job of being inclusive towards older people, give them positive feedback so they keep doing it. It’s to businesses’ advantage to improve their game. Ageist attitudes are not just bad for customers, they’re also bad for business. People who experience ageist service often do not come back and do not spend their money at that business again. As one person wrote: “Often excluded from service in shops - if this happens, I don’t use the service again - their loss as I have the means to employ them.” To read more about the report and to join National Seniors Australia - www.nationalseniors.com.au White hair syndrome – when you’re the last customer served A new National Seniors Australia (NSA) research report reveals your experiences of ageist treatment in shops, cafes, and bars. happens repeatedly, it is debilitating to the person on the receiving end. The report reproduces all 130+ comments we received on this topic, to help readers get a sense of its prevalence and what it is like to experience the same thing over and over. Feeling invisible is a common experience. Comments included: “Sometimes in stores, shop attendants ignore you as if you are not there.” “I feel like I’m invisible at times, especially in restaurants. I often joke that it’s a good time to rob a bank as no-one sees me!” “In cafes and restaurants have had the experience of being overlooked or forgotten about. I tell my children it is my new superpower, invisibility.” When customers are queuing, older people are often served last: “Sometimes when there are younger ones being served ahead, even when I have been waiting longer.” “Often when shopping/lining up, you are passed over for a younger customer.” “I call it the ‘white hair syndrome’. Often the older person is left waiting while others are served.” Some commenters told us that if they were out shopping with a younger person, customer service staff would often speak to them instead: “Salespeople have addressed my daughter rather than me, despite the fact that I am the purchaser.” “I have the double-whammy of my assumed older age and being in a wheelchair, so often in a restaurant, cafe, or other retail environment, the assistant will refer/speak to my companion and totally disregard me, often not even looking at me.” At times the service is actively bad,

With over 85% of the population living within 50 kilometres of the beach, it’s no surprise that conversations often revolve around which beach to visit as the season approaches. However, summer fun comes with a serious caveat: the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. While we’ve learned to protect our skin, safeguarding our eyes is just as critical. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause both short- and long-term eye damage, including conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, and even ocular melanoma. In the short term, it can lead to photokeratitis, commonly known as “snow blindness.” Australia’s high rates of sun-related conditions, including skin cancer and eye damage, underscore the need for better sun-safe habits. Although skin cancer rates are gradually declining, the incidence of sun-related eye issues continues to rise. Experts predict a significant increase in the number of Australians developing cataracts over the next two decades. Understanding Cataracts Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens, often develop slowly over years of repeated UV exposure. While they aren’t caused by a single afternoon at the beach without sunglasses, cumulative damage builds over time. Taking small, consistent steps to protect your eyes can help reduce the risk of developing cataracts and other vision problems. Protecting Kids’ Eyes Children are particularly vulnerable to UV-related eye damage, making it essential to instill good habits early. When selecting sunglasses for kids, prioritise options that offer genuine sun protection. Wraparound styles that fit snugly on the face are ideal. Avoid novelty sunglasses or costume shop varieties—they might look fun, but they won’t protect young eyes at the beach. The show returns to the Gold Coast due to popular demand, following its sell-out performance at The Star Theatre in August last year. The 10-piece international cast, made up of musicians, backing vocalists and dancers, and fronted by South African TV and theatre star Caroline Borole, will fly into Queensland for the festive season direct from huge tours of North America and New Zealand. A set list jam-packed with Turner’s soulful rock hits is sure to evoke nostalgia (in the best way), rouse a few enthusiastic sing-alongs and fill the open dance floor from the first song: (Simply) The Best, Nutbush, Proud Mary, River Deep Mountain High, What’s Love Got to Do With It and We Don’t Need Another Hero are just some of the classics included. “We know the Gold Coast loves a fun night out, and this is the ultimate feel-good, high energy show, so we are expecting the best atmosphere and a really fun crowd who want to end their year on a high note”, says star, Borole. Rock n Roll Scotland’s Resurrectionists: The Dark Trade Behind Medical Progress In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Scotland’s rise as a centre of medical education depended on a hidden and troubling trade: the work of resurrectionists, or body-snatchers, who supplied anatomy schools with desperately needed cadavers. Because the law allowed only the bodies of executed criminals to be used for dissection, medical teachers faced a severe shortage. Resurrectionist gangs filled the gap by exhuming freshly buried bodies from kirkyards and selling them for high fees. Communities fought back by guarding graves, building watch houses, and installing heavy iron mortsafes to prevent theft. Despite these efforts, grave-robbing remained common, especially in rural areas with little night-time protection. The trade reached a horrific climax in 1828 when Burke and Hare murdered vulnerable individuals and sold the bodies to an Edinburgh anatomist. Public outrage over the case led to the Anatomy Act of 1832, which established a legal supply of bodies and ended Scotland’s resurrectionist era. This practice, whilst prevalent in Scotland, was also known to happen in areas of England. 10 Supporting Primary Carers: Resources and Solutions We are open during the Christmas period to help your loved one Being a primary carer for a loved one is both fulfilling and challenging. On the Gold Coast, various resources and support systems are available to help carers manage their responsibilities and maintain their well-being. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, we recognise the demands of caregiving and have compiled this guide to offer practical information and support options. Understanding the Role of Primary Carers Primary carers provide essential care and emotional support for loved ones, often round the clock. Whether caring for an elderly parent, a spouse with a chronic condition, or a child with special needs, carers face significant challenges, including physical and emotional strain, social isolation, financial stress, and burnout. Acknowledging these difficulties is crucial to seeking the right support. Home Care Assistance Resources We provide a wealth of resources, including articles, caregiving guides, stress management tips, and advice on navigating healthcare systems. Specialised information on topics like dementia care and post-operative support equips carers to deliver quality care while safeguarding their own health. Respite Care Services Respite care provides temporary relief by ensuring loved ones receive professional care while carers take necessary breaks. This service is vital for preventing burnout and maintaining overall well-being. Support Groups Joining a support group fosters connection, emotional support, and practical advice. Groups tailored to specific conditions, such as dementia or disability, offer opportunities to share experiences and gain valuable insights. Educational Workshops and Training Workshops and training enhance carers’ skills in areas such as medical condition management, caregiving techniques, and self-care strategies, boosting their confidence and effectiveness. How Home Care Assistance Gold Coast Can Help Professional home care services can alleviate many caregiving challenges. We create personalised care plans that address the unique needs of both carers and care recipients. Our services include: Personal Care: Assistance with daily activities like bathing and grooming. MarblecoteTM is completely seamless (there are no joins). A brand new factory made ‘stone’ or laminated benchtop will have joins sometimes only one or two, often three or four. Does this difference really matter? Well, yes, it does, especially if you want your benchtop to be hygienically superior. A quick question... how many bacteria can fit on a pinhead? Answer... (fun fact) six million. Bacteria includes e-coli, salmonella, Covid and many more. The second most popular place for bacteria to dwell and thrive in the home - after doorknobs - is the kitchen benchtop. And no matter how tight those joins appear to be, to bacteria they are like the Grand Canyon... party central! MarblecoteTM is stain, heat and scratch resistant. Whilst very resilient (finished with ceramic coating), it is not bulletproof. So if someone drops a brick on it (yes, we’ve had that happen!) damage will occur. Unlike other benchtops, damage like that can be repaired in around one hour and the repair won’t be visible. MarblecoteTM is handcrafted so that each benchtop is unique and there’s a three year warranty. Cost comparison - the MarblecoteTM System if one quarter to one fifth the cost of a new replacement bench. For contact details and website, please refer to the advertisement below. Specialising Garden Makeovers & Rejuvenation * Garden Care * Plant Selection * Soft Landscaping by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant Three wonderful flowering plants attracted the attention of two famous explorers, botanists and plant collectors, and soon became part of an Australian Christmas. Robert Brown spotted and collected the glorious Ceratopetalum gummiferum, commonly known as NSW Christmas Bush, growing on a headland in Port Jackson in 1802. Brown was the botanist who journeyed with Matthew Flinders, circumnavigating the continent, collecting and often naming what were mostly unknown species to them. The species must have been collected earlier as it was named in 1793 by J.E Smith, founder of the Linnean Society in England, the oldest learned society devoted to the science of natural history. The species remains popular in floristry during the Christmas season, and is grown commercially in plantations. Its natural range is from the Sydney Region to Evans Head in Northern NSW, and is popular as a small tree in gardens. The small white flowers are cupped in protective sepals, often mistaken for flowers. The sepals enlarge and turn a brilliant, reddish-pink, and along with the first flush of white flowers, result in a long vase life. Ludwig Leichhardt is known for his daring exploration, and sadly, for a failed crossing of the continent from East to West. Leichhardt and his expedition team were never located. His work as a botanical plant collector and explorer on Australian shores began in 1842, continuing his prolific record-keeping and plant collection up until the fatal crossing. In 1842, Leichhardt collected the delightful Christmas Bell, Blandfordia grandiflora, on the shores of Lake Macquarie, NSW. Its natural range is from around Sydney to Fraser Island, and it was collected in an area of swampy ground at Bilinga in 1931. It has stiff, narrow leaves and a flower spike that extends above the leaves, carrying up to 20 bell-like, orange and yellow flowers. Christmas Orchid, Calanthe triplicata is another species first collected for identification by Leichhardt in 1845 in Queensland. The collection area has been removed from public records to ensure its survival from potential threats. Its natural growing environment is along the coast and coastal ranges north from Wollongong to Cape York, in shade on the rainforest floor or under dense sclerophyll forest. Enjoy NSW Christmas Bush flowers that are grown in plantations or on private land. The latter two precious beauties, which bring joy and beauty during the Christmas Season, are protected at various levels by State and Commonwealth Legislation. Christmas Orchid and Christmas Bells in the wild are under potential threat from harvesting, with stringent licensing and hefty penalties for breaches. Celebrate these once commonly local flowers only from approved sources. Eden Fox, an artist on the brink of her big break, sets off for a run before her first exhibition. When she returns to the home she recently moved into, Spyglass, an enchanting old house in Hope Falls, nothing is as it should be. Her key doesn’t fit. A woman, eerily similar to her, answers the door. And her husband insists that the stranger is his wife. One house. One husband. Two women. Someone is lying. Six months earlier, a reclusive Londoner called Birdy, reeling from a life-changing diagnosis, inherits Spyglass. This unexpected gift from a long-lost grandmother brings her to the pretty seaside village of Hope Falls. But then Birdy stumbles upon a shadowy London clinic that claims to be able to predict a person’s date of death, including her own. Secrets start to unravel, and as the line between truth and lies blurs, Birdy feels compelled to right some old wrongs. My Husband’s Wife is a tangled web of deception, obsession, and mystery that will keep you guessing until the last page. Prepare yourself for the ultimate mind-bending marriage thriller and step inside Spyglass – if you dare – to experience a story where nothing is as it seems.
