2 The key is knowing how to ask the right questions, and being willing to walk away if you don’t get the deal you want. For Over 50s, who are often managing tighter budgets in retirement or looking to stretch every dollar further, mastering the art of haggling can make a real difference. Insurance: Don’t Accept the Renewal Letter One of the most common places people lose money is with insurance renewals. Whether it’s home, car, or health insurance, companies often increase premiums automatically. Before you pay, pick up the phone. Tell them you’re shopping around, and ask directly if they can do better. In many cases, you’ll be transferred to a “retention team” whose job is to keep you as a customer — often with a lower premium or added extras. Always have a comparison quote handy from a rival insurer; it gives you leverage. Buying a New Car: Knowledge is Power Car dealerships are one of the last bastions of old-fashioned haggling. The sticker price is almost never the final price. Do your homework before you go in: check online listings, talk to multiple dealers, Getting a Better Deal After 50 and know what trade-in value you can expect if you’re swapping an older vehicle. Ask about drive-away pricing, on-road costs, and extras like tinted windows or extended warranties. Even if the dealer won’t budge on price, they might throw in free servicing or accessories — all of which saves you money. The golden rule? Be polite but firm, and don’t be afraid to say you’ll think about it and walk out. More often than not, the phone will ring with a “better offer.” Electricity and Phone Plans: The Quiet Discounts When it comes to utilities, many providers keep their best deals hidden for new customers or those who threaten to switch. Call your electricity retailer and ask what discounts or plans you’re eligible for — often they’ll have specials that aren’t advertised. With mobile phones, it pays to check your usage. If you’re consistently under-using your data, you could save by moving to a smaller, cheaper plan. Mention that you’re considering moving to another provider and see if they’ll match or beat the offer. Tips for Successful Haggling 1. Do your research: Know the market price so you can recognise a genuine deal. 2. Be polite and respectful: You’ll get further with friendliness than with aggression. 3. Ask open-ended questions: “What can you do on the price?” often works better than demanding a discount. 4. Use silence: After you ask for a better deal, stop talking. The other person may fill the silence by offering a reduction. 5. Be ready to walk away: The willingness to leave often triggers the best offer. Why It Matters For Over 50s, saving money through haggling isn’t just about stretching the pension or retirement savings — it’s about taking control. Every dollar you don’t overpay can go toward things you enjoy, whether that’s travel, hobbies, or spoiling the grandkids. And once you’ve tried it a few times, you’ll realise that businesses expect customers to negotiate. So the next time a bill lands in your letterbox or inbox or you’re eyeing off a shiny new car, remember: the first price is rarely the final price. A little confidence, some research, and a willingness to ask could save you hundreds — even thousands — every year. Most of us grew up thinking that the price on the tag, the quote on the phone, or the figure on the bill was fixed. Yet in today’s world, that isn’t always true. Many businesses — from insurance companies and phone providers to car dealers and electricity retailers — build some “wiggle room” into their prices. Protein isn’t just about building muscle – it helps maintain strength, supports bone density, boosts immunity, and keeps energy levels steady. Without it, simple tasks like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or getting up from a chair can gradually become harder, threatening independence. Health experts recommend older adults aim for around 1.0g of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. For a 70kg person, that means about 70g per day. To get the most benefit, it’s best to spread protein evenly across meals – aiming for at least 25–30g at each meal rather than trying to fit it all in at once and having protein rich snacks throughout the day in combination with meals. The challenge is that preparing protein-rich meals three times a day and snacks can feel overwhelming, especially if shopping, chopping, or cooking is tiring. That’s where Gourmet Meals can make life easier. Our dietitian-approved high-protein meals, soups, and sides are designed with older adults in mind. They’re nutritionally balanced, easy to heat, and delicious – giving you peace of mind that you’re getting the nutrients you need without the effort. By making protein a daily priority, you’re not just fuelling your body – you’re actively protecting your independence, health, and quality of life. With Gourmet Meals, staying strong and well-nourished has never been simpler. Protein matters after 55 – and Gourmet Meals is here to help you enjoy it every day. 7 Shop 40/1 Mudgeeraba Rd, Worongary Town Centre 5/26-28 Commerce Drive, Robina For many people, getting dentures feels like the promise of a fresh start. The idea of a full smile, the ability to eat freely again, and the confidence to speak without hesitation can sound like an overnight transformation. But while dentures do bring enormous benefits, they are not a “quick fix.” Understanding what’s realistic—and what isn’t—can make the adjustment much smoother and save you frustration along the way. One of the most common misconceptions is that dentures will feel and function just like natural teeth from day one. In reality, there is always an adjustment period. At first, dentures can feel bulky or awkward in the mouth. Speaking may require practice, especially with certain words, and chewing can feel different. This is perfectly normal and improves with time as your mouth and muscles adapt. Another expectation is that dentures will restore your ability to eat absolutely everything. While modern dentures are designed for comfort and strength, there may still be limitations. Foods that are very sticky, hard, or tough can be challenging. Many denture wearers discover that cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing slowly makes a big difference. Over time, most people return to enjoying a wide variety of meals, though it may not be exactly like before. Comfort is also an area where reality often differs from expectation. Dentures are custom-fitted, but your gums and jaw naturally change over the years. This means adjustments are a normal part of denture care. On the positive side, the benefits are undeniable. Dentures can restore your smile, support facial structure, and boost self-confidence. Many people feel years younger once they adjust, both in appearance and in how they interact socially. The key is patience, realistic expectations, and regular check-ups with your dentist to keep everything in balance. In the end, dentures are a remarkable tool for maintaining quality of life, but they’re not a perfect replacement for natural teeth. By embracing the reality—an adjustment period, ongoing care, and a few lifestyle tweaks—you’ll be far more satisfied with the results. 8 by Kate Heffernan Honorary Life Member Friends of GCRBG, Botanic Garden Consultant Exported the world over, and a feature of Australian cuisine in the finest restaurants, the Macadamia has its origins all around us on the Gold Coast. All four regional species grow naturally in the wild landscapes of South East Queensland. Two species, the edible Macadamia integrifolia, and M.tetraphylla, grow in either the drier rainforests of places like Nicholls Scrub in Currumbin Valley, Tamborine Mountain, on Beechmont Plateau and just across the border into New South Wales at Bilambil and Mullumbimby. They also grew in littoral rainforests near beaches, but development has accounted for the demise of most coastal forms. The inedible M. ternifolia was first collected by Ludwig Leichhardt in the Conondale Ranges in 1843. All three species are listed as Vulnerable in the wild. Discovered a few decades ago, a fourth species, Macadamia jansenii is limited to one national park near Gympie. It is a poisonous form and is Critically Endangered in the wild. Both Walter Hill, Director of Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Ferdinand Von Mueller, Director of Melbourne Botanic Gardens, are credited with collecting Macadamia integrifolia in 1857. It was named for fellow scientist and academic John Macadam. The title ‘nut’ comes about because of their similarity in texture to other nuts. They are botanically a follicle, not a nut. The ‘nut’ is inside an extremely hard shell, which is released from an outer green husk. First Nation people of the region, including the Kabi Kabi, Yugambeh, Bundjalung and Kombumerri had separate names for the nuts, including Bauphil, Boomberra, and Jindilli. There are records and stories of these groups treating them as a delicacy. The first planting of a Macadamia for growing fruit was planted at what is now Brisbane City Botanic Gardens in 1858 by the first Director, Walter Hill. It remains growing over 160 years later. The first plantations were established in the 1880’s. Macadamia trees are an attractive flowering tree with racemes of either pink or cream/white flowers. They require space, excellent drainage and are best suited to larger yards. Grafted forms are preferred, and where there is space, it’s wisest to plant two separate hybrids for better pollination. Two species and hybrid forms are grown and harvested by over 700 Australian farmers for domestic and export markets. As a food, Macadamias are high in fibre, minerals and vitamins, and are rich in monounsaturated and healthy fats. The Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens feature several macadamia trees in its Endangered Plants Trail and Fruits of the Forest Collection. Glasses are like an extension of our body, and a perfect fit can make a world of difference. Here’s a guide to help you choose the most comfortable eyeglasses. Determine the Type of Eyeglasses You Need The first step is ensuring your eyeglasses improve your vision. Start with an accurate, up-to-date prescription. Then, think about the type of lenses that suit your lifestyle and visual needs. Some options include: • Single-vision lenses: For nearsightedness or farsightedness. • Multifocals: For those who need multiple focal points. • Reading glasses: For presbyopia. • Prism lenses: To correct disorders like double vision. • Plano lenses: For changing your look without prescription correction. • Prescription sunglasses: Offering both UV protection and vision correction. Consider lens coatings and add-ons like anti-glare or blue light filters, especially if you spend time in front of digital screens. These can enhance comfort and protect your eyes. Match Your Eyeglasses to Your Face Shape Next, consider your face shape. Selecting frames that suit your face helps distribute the weight evenly, avoiding pressure points on your nose, temples, or cheekbones. The goal is to find glasses that feel like a natural part of your face—lightweight and barely noticeable. Know Your Measurements Accurate measurements are key to a comfortable fit. Important dimensions include frame width, lens width, temple length, and bridge width. The bridge, the horizontal distance between the lenses, plays a significant role in weight distribution on your nose. Here are a few tips: • The bridge should not feel tight on your nose. • A slight gap between the glasses and your nose is acceptable. • If the bridge is too wide, your glasses will slide down. • If too narrow, they will create pressure on your sinuses. Consider Your Lifestyle and Personality Your lifestyle also influences the comfort of your eyeglasses. If you have an active lifestyle—whether in sports or outdoor activities—look for durable, flexible materials like polycarbonate. These are impact-resistant and lighter than traditional plastics, reducing strain on your nose and ears. For those who spend hours in front of screens, lenses with blue light filters can reduce eye strain. On the other hand, if style is your priority, lightweight materials such as acetate can offer both fashion and comfort. Choosing comfortable eyeglasses requires careful consideration of your vision needs, face shape, measurements, and lifestyle. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 24 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. 10 How Respite Care Can Benefit Everyone When you have a family member who needs support, stepping into the role of carer can feel deeply rewarding. It gives you the chance to be there for someone you love and to know you are making their life more comfortable. However, this responsibility can also become exhausting, especially as you juggle your loved one’s care alongside family needs, work commitments, and the demands of daily life. Without the right support, many family carers find themselves at risk of burnout. This is where respite care can provide essential relief. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, we understand the positive impact respite care can have for both carers and their loved ones, which is why we have created this guide on how it can help. When a loved one grows older or is diagnosed with a chronic illness, many families want to manage their care personally. While this desire comes from a place of love, the reality is that ongoing care often stretches over years, not weeks. Over time, the consequences for the carer can be immense—strained family relationships, limited social connections, reduced work capacity, and even physical, emotional, and mental health challenges. Ironically, this may lead to a reduced ability to provide quality care and can unintentionally place stress on the relationship with the very person you are striving to help. Taking time out for yourself by engaging in respite care is not a sign of weakness—it is an act of responsibility. Respite home care allows you to step back, recharge, and return with renewed energy and focus. With respite care, a trained Care Professional comes into your loved one’s home to provide tailored support based on their individual needs. This may involve personal care, meal preparation, companionship, or assistance with daily tasks. Some families turn to respite care simply because they need a break to rest. Others may use it to attend to family matters, enjoy a holiday, or catch up on personal commitments. Many carers find that scheduling regular respite—such as a weekend every month—provides a consistent opportunity to rest and prevents the emotional toll of long-term stress. The important thing is to arrange respite before you reach the point of complete exhaustion. Proactive breaks can make a world of difference. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, our team of experienced carers are fully trained and carefully vetted. We also take care of the scheduling, so if one Care Professional is unavailable, another will step in to ensure your loved one continues to receive the care they need. This means you can take your break with peace of mind, knowing your family member is safe, supported, and comfortable. Respite care makes a real difference in sustaining the wellbeing of both carers and care recipients over the long journey of providing care. Everyone’s needs are unique, and the flexibility of respite care ensures that the support provided fits each family’s circumstances. If you’d like to explore how Home Care Assistance Gold Coast can support you and your loved one with tailored respite services or independent living solutions, contact our friendly team today. Caring for yourself is an essential part of caring for those you love—and respite care can help you achieve both. see advert page 11 NO NEED TO REPLACE YOUR KITCHEN Kitchen Rescue ENJOY THE LOOK & FEEL OF MARBLE prestigebenchtopcoatings.com.au 0422 757 163 ABN 453 739 803 48 FREE QUOTE MarbleCoteTM Benchtop Restoration: Repairs & Resurfacing Stain, Heat & Scratch Resistant 1/5 of the replacement cost Splashbacks: MarbleCote TM to match benchtops Cabinet doors & panels: Repairs & Satin or gloss finish The first question people ask when enquiring about the MarblecoteTM benchtop restoration system is “how does it compare to a brand new factory produced laminate or socalled ‘stone’ benchtop?” The MarblecoteTM system first developed here on the Gold Coast over 10 year ago, has been refined and improved to where we are today. MarblecoteTM is completely seamless (there are no joints). A brand new factory made ‘stone’ or laminated benchtop will have joins sometimes only one or two, often three or four. Does this difference really matter? Well, yes, it does, especially if you want your benchtop to be hygienically superior. A quick question... how many bacteria can fit on a pinhead? Answer... (fun fact) six million. Bacteria includes e-coli, salmonella, Covid and many more. The second most popular place for bacteria to dwell and thrive in the home - after doorknobs - is the kitchen benchtop. And no matter how tight those joins appear to be, to bacteria they are like the Grand Canyon... party central! MarblecoteTM is stain, heat and scratch resistant. Whilst very resilient (finished with ceramic coating), it is not bulletproof. So if someone drops a brick on it (yes, we’ve had that happen!) damage will occur. Unlike other benchtops, damage like that can be repaired in around one hour and the repair won’t be visible. MarblecoteTM is handcrafted so that each benchtop is unique and there’s a three year warranty. 12 Where do I start? There are many Facebook pages dedicated to Genealogy and Family Research. One of the often asked questions goes something like this: ‘I know my 3rd great-grandmother came from Scotland, but I am not sure how to get her onto my tree. Where do I start?’ All family trees should start with yourself, never by trying to fit someone in that you have been told is a relative. You know your own information; record that, then go back to your parents. From there, your grandparents and so on. Prove each fact, be sure dates are correct and you don’t have a lady giving birth at 10 years of age, for example. As you go back each generation, the number of ancestors doubles – one you, two parents, four grandparents and so on. I can be helpful to follow one line at a time, perhaps starting with your father, his father, his father, for as far back as you can get. Then come back and do the same for your mother. You will pick up their spouses as you go – it is easiest to complete one line at a time. You will eventually reach this reported 3rd great-grandmother. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. He has never lifted a weight or fired a gun in anger, and he has no special physical or investigatory skills. The dark world is not a place he knows – until the FBI comes calling on the very day of his estranged Vietnam veteran father’s funeral. They tell him that the company he works for is actually a criminal organization. And they need his help in a risky endeavour to bring it all down. In doing so, Nash’s perfect world is destroyed. And in seeking justice and revenge, Nash must become someone else: a man of violence and physicality who must find traction and purpose in the same dark world that invaded and crushed everything near and dear to him. Can Walter Nash reinvent himself into a weapon of righteousness and justice? The odds are not with him. But bet against Walter Nash at your peril . . . Author Information- David Baldacci is one of the world’s bestselling and favourite thriller writers. Lamont, Labrador Win a $50 GIFT Card During his physical examination, a doctor asked a man about his physical activity level. He described a typical day this way: "Well, yesterday afternoon, I took a five hour walk, about 7km through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I narrowly avoided standing on 2 snakes. I climbed several rocky hills. I took a few 'leaks' behind some big trees. The mental stress of it all left me shattered, so at the end of it all I drank eight beers." Inspired by the story, the doctor said, "Wow, You must be one hell of an outdoors man!" 17 Peach, Almond and Yoghurt Cake • 220g unsalted butter (Butter IS best) • 250g caster sugar • 1 tsp vanilla • 3 eggs • 300g SR Flour • 50ml milk • 250g natural yoghurt • 1 tsp amaretto or other liqueur (optional) • 450g small fresh peaches, stoned and chopped (I’ve used tinned peaches and it works quite well – Discard juice) • 50g flaked almonds • 1/2 cup extra natural yoghurt – extra • ½ cup cream Preheat oven to 170deg. Grease a 23cm springform tin and line the base with non-stick baking paper. Cream butter and sugar till fluffy. Add vanilla, then eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add ½ the sifted flour, milk and ½ the yoghurt – beat for about 1 minute. Add remaining flour and yoghurt, add liqueur if using any, and mix. Fold in the chopped peaches. Pour mix into prepared tin and scatter almonds on top. Bake for 1½ hours. (If you find the cake is browning too quickly, cover with some aluminium foil). Remove from the oven and leave in tin to cool. When serving, beat the extra yoghurt and cream in a bowl till thick. Serve on the side. This is a very dense cake and would be suitable for a dessert. Walnut Coffee Cake Funny thing is – there’s no coffee in it! However, a slice of this is good with a cup of coffee. 2 Tbsp Softened butter ½ cup sugar 1 egg, beaten ½ tsp vanilla Pinch of salt 1 cup S.R. Flour ½ cup milk Topping or filling – You can do either. 2 Tbsp softened butter ½ cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp SR Flour ½ tsp Cinnamon ½ cup chopped walnuts ½ desiccated coconut Preheat oven 170deg. Grease a 20cm sandwich tin. Cream butter and sugar, add beaten egg, vanilla, and salt and beat. Fold in sifted flour and add milk. Stir to combine. To make topping: Cream butter and sugar, add flour and cinnamon. Stir in the walnuts and coconut. Put ½ the mixture in the greased tin, spread ½ the topping over, put the remaining mixture in, and finish with the rest of the topping. Bake for 20 minutes. Cakes with a difference... (Available at most supermarkets near yoghurts or desserts) 1 x 165g packet Maltesers Preheat oven to 175deg. Grease a 18cm square cake tin. Sift together flour, sugar and cocoa.
