I make that claim having seen Sir Elton John in Brisbane. The Valentines Day night was an amazing combination of planned circumstances and unique happenstances involving the Twin Towns Technical Team and the Artist himself. The Showroom was full, the audience were already excited to be there, some were even wearing one of many trademark crazy Elton type glasses. Frankly, the only one who wasn’t excited was Greg’s left leg. He was in disguised agony all night. No one really knew just how chronic the pain was. He’s a trouper, he wanted to do the show, and whoever wished him the old showbiz proverb “break a leg” – yes, please don’t do that again. While Greg Andrew is such a superb piano player, his band is also more than exceptional. They act with absolute precision, synchronicity, and harmony at the exact, most advantageous moment in every song. Theres not a feeler gauge thin enough, which can slip between the timing on any Elton song. I’d describe it as eerie when you consider how many players and singers are involved. Twenty-two songs, all hits, with hundreds of backup singers (in the right key, except me). Could it get better ? – yes! Twin Towns had installed a brand-new LED lighting set-up. So magnificent songs, all 22 of them like “Bennie and The Jets”, “(I think that’s why they) Call it the Blues”, “Your Song” - his piano solo medley of Daniel / Sorry / Lion King - were artistically bathed with lights beyond comprehension. For me however, the theatrical encore of “Rocketman” was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most awesome spectaculars I have ever witnessed, almost bordering on a religious experience. Greg was still smiling – although him singing “I’m Still Standing” was ironic.
