To capture the invaluable information our elders are keeping ask them if they are happy to sit and have a chat. Do approach interviews with patience and empathy, creating a comfortable space for reminiscing. Try utilizing various recording mediums such as audio or video to capture not just the words spoken but also the emotions and nuances of the conversation. Remember to organise the gathered information systematically, perhaps by creating a detailed family tree recording anecdotes, names, dates, and locations. This facilitates easy retrieval and understanding. You could also transcribe interviews further enhancing accessibility, making it easier for future generations to explore and learn from the stories shared. By then saving the gathered information to your family tree you can share this knowledge among relatives and ensure the legacy endures beyond the present. Please do remember though that our elderly sometimes have a ‘rosy’ view of the past and may embellish or even make up stories for our benefit. It is essential to fact-check all information you receive. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter.
