25 Australian Beach Boys Tribute Show MUSIC Review TWIN TOWNS 6th FEBRUARY | California Dreamin’ What would be unfair, because it’s highly subjective, would be to run any comparison of the three top vocal harmonizing bands from 60’s -70’s. Beach Boys, Bee Gees and the Eagles. However, concentrating on the Beach Boys and the complexity of their internationally pop-cultured, dictionary-inserted song “Good Vibrations”. It took around 6 months to record it from hand-written paper-based music sheets, a bevy of session musicians, 90 hours of magnetic tape recordings at 4 different recordings studios over 12 sessions and costing reputedly in today’s money $240,000 - made it the costliest single ever recorded in history. The Wilson boys grew up with the records of Glenn Miller, Mel Tones, Four Lads and the Four Freshman playing in their family home. Consequently, that soothing influence set the future trajectory to fame. “Quirky” is a polite, respectful and descriptive word for Brian Wilson. A young genius who persevered with experimentation to get what he was finally happy with. What the Beach Boys delivered on vinyl blew our minds, captured our youthful spirit yearning for our own music. The post war teens discovered the surf and electric guitars, fast cars and freedom, and matched the music to go with it. A whole new generation wanted this sound. Ahhh - the memories! The Twin Towns showroom hosted the truly classy Australian Beach Boys Tribute Show recently. Yet in my mind they would have to be good. And frankly I didn’t have my hopes up. Let me tell you why. I have a couple of Live albums of the original Beach Boys, one authorised and one bootleg. Both are shockers (in my opinion) What was recorded in the studio didn’t seem to transition to the stage. Could have been the inability to hear themselves. Australian Beach Boys Tribute Show. They nailed "the look" and the intricate harmonies big time! I honestly could not grasp how impressive they were. Neither could the full house. God Only Knows how they did it. Bravo boys – I Can Hear Music and it is so sweet. www.twintowns.com.au Reviewed by 101FM Radio Presenter Stu Robertson www.101fm.com.au Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography) TAOIST TAI CHI is an effective form of holistic health training suitable for all ages, and adaptations can be made to match any level of ability.
