Maybe your grandmother knew a storm was coming when their knees started to hurt. Or you’ve felt your own joints ache when the temperature outside drops. It’s common to blame joint pain flare-ups on changes in the weather, and many doctors believe people can feel more joint pain on cold, rainy days. But the research on the connection between the two isn’t clear. Barometric pressure - or the pressure of the air - can affect joints, but humidity, precipitation, and temperature are also at play. That makes it tricky for scientists to pinpoint exactly what it is about the weather that leads some people to report more pain when it’s cold, rainy, or humid. How Weather May Affect Joints Scientists have done many studies on joint pain and weather over the years, but so far, none can say for sure what the connection is. Part of the problem is the studies themselves -- many have used surveys of just a small number of people, which isn’t a very reliable way to measure a link. Still, there are a few theories about the relationship. One is that people with joint pain, especially arthritis, may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. How? It could be that when the cartilage that cushions the bones inside a joint is worn away, nerves in the exposed bones might pick up on changes in pressure. Another idea: Changes in barometric pressure may make your tendons, muscles, and any scar tissue expand and contract, and that can create pain in joints affected by arthritis. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside joints thicker, so they feel stiffer. You might also feel more pain when the weather keeps you from moving around as much as you typically do. People tend to stay indoors and lounge around more when it’s cold and rainy outside, and inactive joints can get stiff and painful. What Kind of Weather? Several studies have tried to pinpoint the kind of weather changes that affect joint pain, but the findings are all over the map. In one survey of 200 people with osteoarthritis in their knee, researchers found that every 10-degree drop in temperature - as well as low barometric pressure - corresponded to a rise in arthritis pain. More recently, however, a Dutch study of 222 people with osteoarthritis of the hip found that over two years, people said their pain and stiffness got worse with rising barometric pressure and humidity. Another group of researchers took a look at medical records of more than 11 million Medicare visits and matched dates to local weather reports. They didn’t see any link between weather changes and joint pain at all. Two recent Australian studies -- one on knee pain and one on lower back pain -- also found no connection to weather change. But even though the science isn’t clear, flare-ups when the weather turns are very real for many people with joint pain. Some people’s bodies may just be more sensitive to changes in the weather. Many people say they find relief in warmer climates, but again, there’s no scientific proof that it will ease your aches. How to Ease Weather-Related Joint Pain You don’t have to pick up and move to a different climate. There’s plenty you can do at home to relieve joint pain. • When temperatures drop, try to keep yourself warm. Take warm showers or baths, dress in layers during the day (including gloves and warm socks), use an electric blanket at night, or crank up the heat inside your home. • Try a paraffin bath. It’s a small machine that melts paraffin wax. You dip your hands and feet in, and then you let the wax harden on your skin. Your body absorbs the heat, which may soothe achy joints. You can also use a heating pad on sore spots. • Ask your doctor about pain medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). • Keep a healthy weight and stay active. Try exercise that’s gentle on the joints, like yoga or swimming. That will help you build up muscle and bone strength. If you go outside to exercise, limber up first with some gentle stretches. • Don’t strain your joints if you don’t have to. Let someone else lift those heavy boxes. • Make sure you take care of your health in general, like with good nutrition and getting enough sleep. 4 MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR The 2022-23 City Budget has several key focus areas including safety, transport and sustainability. As Mayor, I am acutely aware of the cost-of-living pressures we all face. These pressures are driven by inflation and are impacting every Australian. The 2022-23 City Budget is my tenth as Mayor and I’m confident it will continue our city’s record of ensuring any rate increases are capped at, or below, CPI (Consumer Price Index). A focus next financial year is on ensuring greater community safety through further investment in CCTV, street lighting and community infrastructure including disability-compliant change rooms and park facilities. Since 2011, we have increased our city CCTV network from 110 fixed cameras to a fleet of more than 700 units today including mobile CCTV and anti-hoon cameras. Safety starts at home and the City and Queensland Police are currently running a camera network trial, known as the Community Camera Alliance (CCA), in Varsity Lakes and Yatala. The trial will provide police with great visual footage, should an incident occur in streets around those two suburbs. The program is confidential and helps keep our streets safe. Access to information greatly assists police and as we all know, visual footage of potential offenders is vital when someone is acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood. I applaud the Queensland Police Service for launching this initiative and we hope more suburbs are included later this year. 6 The $1 trillion question, “how do I live comfortably and confidently in retirement?” This question is asked against the backdrop of Australians not only living longer than our counterparts in the US and UK, but also against the prediction (via the Australian Bureau of Statistics) that the number of retirees will be in excess of 7+ million within the total population by 20311. Consider the ratio of working Australians to those retired has dropped from 17:1 to 3.5:1 from 1995. Leading to further questions regarding the future sustainability of the Aged Pension as well as fear of outliving existing superannuation and savings. So, how will you retire comfortably and confidently? The future for Australian retirement income is set to come from locked away retiree wealth within their property portfolio. Deloitte actuary and partner, James Hickey has estimated a lender release of home equity in Australian retirees of 30% to fund the gap in their retirement requirements2. Australian retirees own $1 trillion of property yet access only 1% of it today, it would take $300 billion to catch our UK and US counterparts where 5% access equity who see themselves as ‘capital rich and income poor’ . Leading professional commentator and Deloitte actuary and partner James Hickey3 states, “I think a lot of people recognise the demand side opportunity is largely there. But at the moment, people really aren’t informed about the product, how it exists alongside the age pension and the superannuation system.” Further to Mr Hickey, an Ernst & Young (EY) roundtable survey also confirmed Australia’s falling behind in acceptance comes down to lack of customer awareness4 as well as legacy concerns of accessing home equity via means of products such as Reverse Mortgages. University of Melbourne professor and Chair of Acorn Capital investment firm Mr John Steven commented: “There’s a lot of people of my age group, quite frankly, who are sitting on quite a lot of capital and they’re unable to, or unsure of how they can access that capital for consumption.5” Since the ASIC 586 review6 performed 2018, the market in Australia has adopted a suite of Government regulations to ensure protection over Australian seniors to prevent abuse, deception, and homeless and indebted retirees. The Reverse Mortgage market is a growing concept for Australian seniors as we move into the product normalisation phase. The Reverse Mortgage market is finally maturing for Australian seniors and it’s now a normal consideration when planning your comfortable retirement. Cultural trends suggest today’s retirees expect more from their retirement, in a safe and controlledmanner with Government endorsement and protection. A.S.A.G. (AustralianSeniorsAdvisoryGroup) isaReverseMortgage lender and product leader in enabling Australian retirees to safely and securely access their locked away home equity to fund a comfortable and confident retirement. Adopting all Government regulations, A.S.A.G. offers a suitable and professional service allowing you to achieve your retirement objectives now and into the future as we recognise “accumulated wealth does not mean living well but access to it does.” So, if you’re asset rich and income poor consider contacting A.S.A.G. to see if this solution to comfortable retirement income could indeed apply to you. It is bordered on its northern side by the Moyne River, which has been channeled between stone ‘training walls’ and provides easy access by sea to the port of Port Fairy. Originally a cluster of three separate islands – Goat, Rabbit and Griffiths – harbour works have consolidated them into a single island which protects the mouth of the Moyne and shelters Port Fairy Bay. It is named after John Griffiths, an entrepreneur and merchant from Launceston in northern Tasmania. From the mid 1830s until 1843 the island served as a base for a bay whaling station for Southern Right Whales, until the supply of whales was exhausted and the industry went into terminal decline. Some shipbuilding also took place during the 1840s. The abandoned whaling station buildings were later used until 1854 by Flora Dunlop, widow of Victorian politician Alexander Dunlop, as a ‘mission’ for young Aborigines. Because of its historic and archaeological significance, the island has been listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. There is a large breeding colony of short-tailed shearwaters, locally known as ‘muttonbirds’, with an estimated 100,000 burrows (of which probably fewer than half are occupied during the September–April breeding season). Griffiths Island has been reserved as public land since 30 April 1902 with Moyne Shire Council (formerly the Borough of Port Fairy) the Committee of Management since 11 June 1902 The official title of Griffiths Island – is “Griffiths & Rabbit Islands Public Park”. The Griffiths Island Lighthouse and a Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were built was built in 1859 by Scottish stonemasons out of bluestone. The unique stairway of the lighthouse was cut with each step being inserted in the next course of stone in the outside wall. The lighthouse is still fully operational and over the years the light’s power has changed from vegetable oil, kerosene, gas and wind to solar power. These days it’s a solar powered light with a wind assisted generator. The lighthouse keepers’ cottages were demolished in the 1950s; however, their gardens live on with many hardy plants flowering in the appropriate season. Griffiths Island - Port Fairy VICTORIA Griffiths Island is a sanctuary for plants, birds and animals.

9 Advertisement The home test kit that could save your life Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia and around 400 Gold Coast residents are diagnosed each year. It is also one of the most treatable cancers when it is detected early. There is a bowel screening home test kit that can help find bowel cancer and pre-cancerous lesions early, by looking for tiny amounts of blood in stool (poo) samples. This is important, as many bowel cancers display no obvious symptoms in the early stages, when successful treatment is more likely. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program currently sends out free bowel screening home test kits to eligible people aged 50-74. If you are due to receive a kit, ensure that Medicare or DVA has your current postal address on file, so that it is mailed to the correct location. Each kit also has an expiry date, so it is important to complete the test as soon as possible after it arrives. If you were sent a home test kit through the national program, but were unable to complete it, you can request a replacement by phoning 1800 627 701. Founder of a wildly popular online shopping service, she is one of the most successful businesswomen in the world, although she prefers to keep a low profile, especially in recent months. It was a year ago when the unthinkable struck her family: her husband, industry mogul Matthieu Pasquier, and their son were kidnapped and held for ransom - a nightmare that ended in tragedy. The case has gone cold, despite evidence linking the crime to Matthieu’s Russian competitors. Theo has reluctantly gone back to work running her company. On the flight to a launch party for one of her highly anticipated pop-up shops in New York City, she crosses paths with high-society ‘networkist’ Pierre de Vaumont. Theo politely invites him to her event -unaware that Pierre has been flagged by the CIA. Senior supervising CIA operative Mike Andrews investigates Pierre’s suspicious Russian contacts and clears him to enter the country, but when he realizes that Theodora Morgan is on the same flight, he becomes concerned for her safety. Posing as a lawyer, Mike begins a covert mission - starting with Theo’s opening party. When Mike and Theo meet, their connection is instant, but Theo is completely unaware of Mike’s true objective or identity . . . or that the life she is rebuilding is in grave danger. Australians have all the right intentions when it comes to recycling, but sometimes they don’t pay off. In fact, 86% of our packaging is designed to be reused, but only 55% of it ever makes it all the way to being recycled. In an effort to do our bit, we’ve compiled a list of common household recycling mistakes so you can be part of the solution kerbside. 1. Not looking closely enough at the label Many of us are used to throwing our packaging into the bin without a second thought, but it can pay to take a closer look at the product for a recycling label. New types of labels, such as The Australasian Recycling Label, let you knowwhether different parts of a package, such as the lid, tray or wrapping, should go in the recycling or not. The Australasian Recycling Label is making it easier to know what you can recycle – and what you can’t. 5. Putting the wrong glass in the wrong bin Broken glassware can cause major problems in the recycling process, as it doesn’t melt at the same temperature as bottles and jars. Best to wrap up any broken glass or crockery in a cloth or several layers of newspaper and put it in your rubbish bin, not the recycling. 6. Recycling plastic cutlery Plastic dining ware is often too flat or too light to be picked up as plastic by recycling machines and can therefore end up in the paper section. Some councils can recycle plastic plates, but it’s best to check first. The thin plastic lining on takeaway coffee cups will also upset paper recycling, so make sure they go in general waste or, even better, a dedicated recycling bin for takeaway cups. 7. Not getting creative with aluminium You can recycle clean aluminium foil and trays in most parts of Australia, but check with your council if in doubt. Make sure they end up in the right section at your local refuse facility by scrunching them into a ball or other solid shape – if you leave them flat, they could contaminate other recycling. 8. Recycling biodegradable or compostable plastics Keep plastic products marketed as being biodegradable or compostable out of your recycling bin, as they can disrupt efforts to repurpose general plastics. What’s more, these materials may not actually break down enough when put in household organic bins. So unless the label says the product is certified Home Compostable, it’s often best to put these items in general waste. 9. Throwing out reusable products If your old or unwanted clothes are in good condition, donate them to op shops. If they’re not, use them as rags for cleaning and the like. You can also make a difference by keeping reusable water bottles, coffee cups and food wrapping handy to save your wallet and the planet from more disposable items. 10. Not buying reused goods The recycling industry is like any other – governed by supply and demand. So if you make an effort to seek out items made from recycled plastics or other materials, you’ll be supporting recyclers and making sure reusable materials are worth more out of the ground than in it. Source: choice.com.au 2. Not cleaning off food and other debris Too much food, liquid or grease can contaminate recyclables and prevent them from being turned into higher-quality materials down the track. Planet Ark recommends giving items a quick rinse if there are any leftovers. 3. Wrongly recycling soft plastics Soft plastics, such as pasta bags and cling wrap, can get tangled in machinery and cause havoc if they’re lumped in with household recycling. The REDcycle bins found at most major supermarkets can take care of many of these items – just check what’s accepted first. Otherwise, the best course of action is to put them in general waste. 4. Putting recyclables in a plastic bag Gathering up all your household recycling in a plastic bag will cause the same issue as in point 3. According to Planet Ark, any recyclables left inside a plastic bag will probably end up in landfill.

Answer next month No. 86 P P P P P P P One evening, after the honeymoon, Bob was working on his Harley motorcycle in the garage. His new wife was standing there by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said, "Honey, I've just been thinking, now that we’re married, maybe it's time you quit spending so much of your time out here in your garage. You probably should consider selling your Harley and all that welding equipment; they take up so much of your time. And that golf equipment and fishing gear, they just take up so much space. And you know the boat is such an ongoing expense; and you hardly use it. I also think you should lose all those stupid model airplanes and your home brewing equipment... "And what’s the use of that vintage hot rod sports car? Bob got a horrified look on his face. She noticed and said, "Darling, what's wrong?" He replied, "You were starting to sound like my exwife." "Ex-wife!?" she shouted, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!" Bob replied, “I wasn't... “ 9 4 7 3 8 9 4 1 3 2 1 6 5 3 4 2 5 8 4 7 3 8 6 9 8 4 4 9 2 7 CROSSWORD 86 by Mona Elliott ACROSS 1. Long, pliable leaves were valued for weaving into baskets nets, mats, and fish traps. The pale, fleshy moist base of the leaves was chewed, providing a pea-like flavour and refreshing the mouth, and the seeds were pounded into flour. The genus was collected by Banks and Solanders in 1770 at Botany Bay and at the Endeavour River, and given the Genus name Xerotes by botanist Robert Brown in 1810. The genus name Lomandra had previously been published by French Botanist Jacques Labillardiere in 1805, and therefore given precedence. Lomandra provides habitat and protection for small mammals, skinks, frogs, and snakes, while the nectarrich flowers attract bees and insects, including some butterflies who lay eggs on the foliage – caterpillars, in turn, attract birds. They are dioecious, meaning they bear male and female flowers on separate plants. A tufting, perennial, strappy leaved herb, Lomandra is often mistaken and placed with the grasses although it is a member of the Asparagaceae family. It can be found growing in a range of natural environments, tolerating wet soils and seasonal flooding, frost, drought, sun, and shade. They are helpful in controlling erosion, their fibrous roots bind the soil, and the dense foliage dissipates the intensity of rainfall. It’s difficult to understand why Lomandra is sometimes maligned as an uninteresting and unattractive plant when it has such an assortment of important uses, both practical and aesthetic. Perhaps it is because they are mass planted in hostile public areas such as roundabouts and roadsides, or considered only suited for use in revegetation. They are equally at home in informal native gardens or formal settings - planted singly or in small groups. The finer, weeping foliage forms visually soften path edges and are attractive when planted near bush rocks or water features. Small groups repeated will introduce unity, an important characteristic, especially in a larger garden. Some of my favourites include Lomandra Tanika LM300 for softness, while the blue-grey leaf form Lomandra fluviatis ‘Shara’ is great for contrast. Lomandra multiflora ssp multiflora, commonly known as Many-flowered Lomandra, and Lomandra ‘Katie Bells’ are spectacular in flower. The many forms of cultivars developed have been matched to individual climatic and growing conditions, so research is recommended before committing to purchase and planting. The key to maintaining Lomandra’s is pruning – cutting them low and hard every few years will bring the best results and reward the gardener in many ways. Versatile is an accurate adjective for the plant Genus Lomandra, known by various common names such as Mat Rush and Basket Grass. Over fifty species of Lomandra can be found growing across Australia, with ten species in South East Queensland, and dozens of cultivars developed by plant breeders. Lomandra Flower Lomandra Formal
