Connections with family, friends and the community matter and enable individuals to experience happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. Research confirms that being connected to others can be a protective factor against anxiety and depression and is important for our mental wellbeing. Loneliness is a feeling of a lack of companionship or quality relationships with other people and is a normal human emotion, indicating a lack of connection. It is often the result of external circumstances, such as the loss of a loved one, and for many, recent isolation due to COVID-19 has exacerbated this feeling. The number of Australians experiencing loneliness continues to increase, as not everyone is as connected as they would like to be. Beyond Blue references, The Australian Loneliness report, indicating that 1 in 4 Australians are lonely and that globally loneliness is a serious public health issue. Within Australia it is at epidemic proportions. This again highlights that building and maintaining good social connections is important for everyone, but as people get older, the risk factors for experiencing loneliness increase. Statistics from The Loneliness report showed lonely Australians are 15.2% more likely to be depressed and 13.1% more likely to experience anxiety regarding social interactions than those not feeling lonely.
