Swell Sculpture Festival Returns to Currumbin Beach The iconic Swell Sculpture Festival returns to Currumbin Beach transforming the stunning coastal strip into a vibrant open-air gallery from 12 to 21 September. The festival will showcase more than 60 large-scale contemporary sculptures by artists from Australia and around the world. Now in its 23rd year, Swell has become one of Queensland’s most anticipated cultural events—and the best part is, it’s completely free to attend. Set against the backdrop of rolling surf and golden sand, Swell invites visitors to immerse themselves in thought-provoking and often playful artworks, each one telling its own story. Beyond the beach, the festival extends into Wallace Nicoll Park with a dynamic program of live music, comedy, artist talks, and creative workshops as part of the Swell Fringe. Throughout the week, twilight guided walks provide deeper insight into the meaning and craftsmanship behind each sculpture, while hands-on masterclasses—such as clay modelling and paint-and-sip sessions—offer the chance to get creative yourself. Families will also find plenty to enjoy, with a dedicated Swell Kids area offering interactive workshops and storytelling sessions designed to inspire young imaginations. The festival’s smaller-scale exhibitions, including the “Swell Smalls Gallery,” give visitors an opportunity to explore art in more intimate formats, and even purchase a piece to take home. 2 As of 1 July, Queenslanders now have permanent access to a broader range of health services for everyday conditions through participating community pharmacies, making it easier for them to receive timely care close to home. Branch President of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, Chris Owen, said participating community pharmacies are now permanently equipped and authorised to manage and treat a variety of common health conditions. "These services are delivered by trained pharmacists, offering timely, convenient, and accessible care without the need for a GP appointment or hospital visit," said Mr Owen. “In particular, I’d like to thank the Crisafulli Government and Minister Nicholls for delivering on the commitment to make these conditions permanent. By allowing community pharmacists to work to a fuller scope Queensland patients will have more choice as to where they can access health care services,” Mr Owen said. "Community pharmacists can help manage and treat everyday conditions including skin issues like acne and atopic dermatitis, common infections including school sores and ear infections, and symptoms like reflux, hay fever and acute nausea and vomiting." Mr Owen also said pharmacists are trained and available to offer expert advice and treatment for hormonal contraception, travel health, shingles and reflux. The complete list of services now Queenslanders have permanent access to more health services at their community pharmacy Mr Owen added that making these services available through community pharmacy gives Queenslanders greater choice as to where and when they accessed health services. "Most Australians live within 2.5 kilometres of a community pharmacy, many of which are open after hours or on weekends. With community pharmacists now able to manage and treat these everyday and chronic conditions, patients can access faster, more convenient everyday care," said Mr Owen. "This also frees up GPs for more complex care cases and helps relieve the pressure on hospital emergency departments – leading to better outcomes for patients, improved access to care, and a more sustainable health care system for all Queenslanders." Patients are encouraged to visit the Find a Pharmacy website to find out more and discover what services their local community pharmacist can offer http://findapharmacy.com.au/ qld-scope permanently available through trained community pharmacies includes: • Acute exacerbations of mild plaque psoriasis • Minor wound management • Acute nausea and vomiting • Acute otitis externa (ear infection) • Acute otitis media (ear infection) • Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis (hay fever) • Gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (reflux) • Herpes zoster (shingles) • Hormonal contraception • Impetigo (school sores) • Management for overweight and obesity • Mild to moderate acne • Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis • Mild acute musculoskeletal pain • Smoking cessation • Travel health • Oral health risk assessment and fluoride application "With the permanency of these services confirmed, more community pharmacists are expected to undertake the additional training required to provide them. This training builds on the years of university education and professional experience already required to practise as a community pharmacist," said Mr Owen. "The continuation of these services marks an important shift in how primary health care is delivered in Queensland, making better use of pharmacists' clinical skills and improving patient access to frontline care." The City is partnering with The Compost Revolution to provide a home composting subsidy for Gold Coast residents to divert food organics from landfill. The initiative is being delivered by the City’s Advanced Resource Recovery Centre (ARRC) project and will allow eligible households to purchase home composting equipment at a discounted cost. “With Gold Coast landfills expected to be full within the next decade, our ARRC project is delivering a number of strategies to reduce waste to landfill through increased recycling and other sustainable initiatives,” Mayor Tom Tate said. “Recovering organics from general waste is a priority to achieve this through the ARRC project. Food organics in landfill creates harmful greenhouse gases, particularly methane, which can contribute to climate change. “The ARRC Compost Revolution program will give Gold Coasters the tools at a subsidised cost to help us reduce landfill and emissions, while we look at other citywide solutions for food organics recycling.” The Compost Revolution supports local councils to provide organics recycling resources at a discounted price, with councils subsidising part of the cost of the purchased resources. Their research shows that the initiative encourages lifelong composting habits and can divert an average of 89.22kg of food organics from landfills each year. The ARRC is a high-tech sustainable circular economy precinct that will end reliance on landfill by increasing recycling capabilities and generating energy from waste that cannot be recycled. It will divert up to 97% of waste from landfill and provide better environmental and economic solutions for waste management. The ARRC Compost Revolution program will provide Gold Coast households the opportunity to purchase one piece of home composting equipment each year at a discounted price, including free delivery. Some of the options include: • The Dirt Vader compost bin and aerator for less than $50 (save $95) • A worm farm and 1kg of worms for $60 (save $100) • A bokashi bin and enzymes for $35 (save $85) When residents join the ARRC Compost Revolution program they receive material and help from The Compost Revolution to achieve successful home composting. 6 Disbudding camellias is a job for small hands, or so it was in the garden of my grandfather, where I learned my first horticulture lessons at a tender age. There’s a rolling sequence of flowering times according to the species or the many cultivated forms of camellias, and reducing an excess of buds helps deliver larger, stronger flowers. Disbudding was also an exercise in patience for this keen, budding gardener! One of the first camellias to arrive in Australia remains a healthy specimen as it reaches a grand age in the historic gardens of Macarthur Park, Camden, NSW. Commonly named the Waratah Camellia, Camellia japonica ‘Anemoniflora’ originated in China and was first grown in England in 1806, arriving at Camden Park in 1831 with a batch of Camellias imported by botanist William Macarthur, eldest son of pastoralist John Macarthur. Twenty years later, the plant catalogue of Guilfoyle’s Nursery at Double Bay in Sydney listed 134 species and cultivars of camellias, including the Waratah Camellia. The breeding of new varieties reached tens of thousands worldwide by 1993, with more than 500 originating from breeding in Australia. The popularity of Camellias varies from time to time, but their longevity, hardiness, and beautiful flowers make them suitable for most gardens or as potted plants. Positioning is an important consideration before selecting a Camellia for gardens or in pots. Sun-hardy Camellia sasanqua cultivars make excellent screens, and flowers make a delightful impact with flowering times spread across autumn, winter, and spring. Camellia japonica cultivars have glossy leaves and need a sheltered location away from intense sunlight. Camellias prefer acid soils, with a pH ranging from 5.8 to 6.5 and as low as pH 5.0 for japonicas. All need excellent drainage, adequate moisture, and well-composted soil. As for disbudding, it is not difficult but needs care and only where there are excessive numbers of multiple flower buds. With a gentle twist, the extras will be removed. Perhaps a great opportunity to see camellias and other plant favourites in bloom is a visit to Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens, and to Springtime on the Mountain Open Garden Trail. This year Open Garden Trail runs for 3 days, commencing Friday 26th September (daily 10am - 4pm). Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting overall health during the colder months, yet appetite often declines with age—especially when it’s cold outside, and daily routines slow down. For many seniors, winter brings a natural tendency to stay indoors, reduce physical activity, and eat lighter meals. Unfortunately, that can lead to unintended nutritional shortfalls, at a time when the body most needs the fuel to stay well. A strong immune system, muscle maintenance, bone strength, and even mood are all directly affected by what—and how regularly—we eat. This is where Gourmet Meals offers a comforting solution. Their ready-made, frozen meals are not just about convenience—they’re carefully developed to provide the nutritional support seniors need during winter. From classic roasts to warming soups and casseroles, their menu is designed to help older adults stay nourished, energised and satisfied, even on the chilliest days. Each meal is cooked with balance in mind: plenty of protein to maintain strength, vegetables for fibre and vitamins, and hearty carbohydrates to help keep energy up. Meals like tender Lamb Roast, Cottage Pie, and Chicken Casserole are more than just comfort food—they’re packed with the right nutrients to support ageing bodies. The convenience of Gourmet Meals also makes a real difference when the weather is less inviting. Shopping and cooking become harder in winter, especially for those with limited mobility or who live alone. With Gourmet Meals, there’s no prep, no mess, and no waste—just wholesome food, ready in minutes. It’s a simple way to keep routines going without compromising on nutrition or enjoyment. Beyond the meals themselves, Gourmet Meals offers the added reassurance of home delivery. For those receiving a Home Care Package, there’s also the option to claim meals through their provider. This makes nutritious eating more affordable, especially for seniors who may otherwise struggle to keep up with daily cooking. As the temperature drops, it’s important to remember that food does more than warm the body—it supports wellbeing in every sense. Enjoying a nourishing meal can bring comfort, spark appetite, and create a moment of connection, even if it’s shared over a phone call or during a carer’s visit. So, this winter, staying healthy doesn’t have to be hard. With Gourmet Meals, seniors can keep eating well, staying strong, and embracing the season with one warm, nourishing meal at a time. PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au As winter settles over the Gold Coast and temperatures drop, many locals begin to experience the uncomfortable effects of dry eyes. Cold air and indoor heating can strip moisture from the environment, leaving eyes feeling dry, irritated, or gritty. Fortunately, there are simple ways to help keep your eyes comfortable and healthy throughout the chilly season. Here are some effective tips to help manage dry eyes this winter. Keep Hydrated - It’s easy to forget to drink water during the colder months, but staying hydrated is key to maintaining moisture in your eyes. Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day to support natural tear production. Warm herbal teas or hot water with lemon are great alternatives if plain water doesn’t appeal in the cold. Add Moisture to the Air - Heating systems in homes and offices can create dry indoor air, making dry eye symptoms worse. Using a humidifier helps restore moisture to the air, which can benefit not just your eyes, but your skin and sinuses too. Remember to Blink - We often blink less in cold or windy weather, especially when spending time outside. Regular blinking helps spread tears evenly across the eyes, reducing dryness and irritation. Be mindful of blinking, particularly if you’re staring at screens. Shield Your Eyes Outdoors - Wind and cold air can quickly evaporate moisture from your eyes. Wearing wraparound sunglasses or protective eyewear when outdoors can shield your eyes from the elements and help retain natural lubrication. They also offer protection from dust, pollen, Combatting Dry Eyes in Winter and wind-borne irritants. Use Lubricating Eye Drops - If your eyes still feel dry despite your best efforts, over-thecounter lubricating drops can provide fast relief. Opt for preservative-free options if you use them frequently, as they’re gentler on the eyes. Dry eyes are a common issue during our cooler months, but with a few simple lifestyle adjustments, you can minimise discomfort and keep your eyes feeling their best. If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms, we’d be happy to help with a comprehensive dry eye assessment. Get in touch— we’d love to see you! 10 Eyes aren't just the window to your soul — they also offer a glimpse into your health. Changes in your eyes can signal vision problems, diabetes, stress, even retinal detachment. What's more, most of these you can actually see for yourself — assuming you know what to look for. You could have an infection. Do you wear contact lenses instead of glasses? Watch out for white spots on your cornea (that clear layer over the front of your eyeball). This is quite common among people who wear contact lenses and can be a sign of a corneal infection. You’re too stressed. Stress can manifest in many ways, one of which is an eye twitch. It’s more annoying than concerning, but it can be a sign you need to get some more rest and manage your stress levels a bit more You could have diabetes. Blurred vision usually means you need glasses — but you should have your eyes checked no matter what. Not only can blurred vision signal a medical problem with the eye itself (like cataracts or macular degeneration), it can also be a sign of a more serious illness like diabetes. Even without trouble seeing, your optometrist may be able to detect diabetes during an eye exam based on irregularities in your retina. Your cholesterol is too high. If you notice a white ring forming around your corneal arcus (your iris), it might be time to visit your optometrist as well as your GP for a check-up. While this particular colour change is most commonly a sign of aging, it can also be an indication of high cholesterol and triglycerides — which might mean an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Your blood pressure is too high. In addition to upping your risk for heart disease and strokes, untreated high blood pressure can also damage the blood vessels in your retina, known as hypertensive retinopathy. You can’t see the effects in the mirror, but your optometrist will be able to spot the damage during your eye exam — even more reason to stick to your annual screenings, considering tipping you off to high blood pressure could actually save your life. You have allergies. If your eyes are super dry and the skin around them is looking a little worn, you might be unconsciously rubbing your eyes too often. Rubbing your eye hard or often can cause your eyelid to become looser, more relaxed and even saggy. If the eyelid sags away from eye, it not only causes wrinkles, but also allows increased exposure to air and can make the eye become overly dry. One of the most common culprits of itchy eyes: seasonal allergies. Your retina could be in danger. You know those little specks that move around your field of vision sometimes? They’re called eye floaters and, while they’re relatively common, they also shouldn’t be dismissed. A sudden increase in the number of floaters you see could be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment. You could have jaundice. If the whites of your eyes are yellowing like old paper, it should come as no surprise that this is definitely a warning sign something is wrong in your body. Jaundice, a condition that occurs when there’s too much bilirubin — a yellow compound formed from the breakdown of red blood cells — in your blood. If your liver can’t filter the cells, bilirubin builds up and can cause your eyes and skin to turn yellow. It’s pretty rare in adults (sometimes babies are born with jaundice), but much of the time it’s due to an infection like hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, or something blocking your bile ducts like gallstones or cancer. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to contact your Optometrist or health care professional immediately. MarblecoteTM is completely seamless (there are no joints). A brand new factory made ‘stone’ or laminated benchtop will have joins sometimes only one or two, often three or four. Does this difference really matter? Well, yes, it does, especially if you want your benchtop to be hygienically superior. A quick question... how many bacteria can fit on a pinhead? Answer... (fun fact) six million. Bacteria includes e-coli, salmonella, Covid and many more. The second most popular place for bacteria to dwell and thrive in the home - after doorknobs - is the kitchen benchtop. And no matter how tight those joins appear to be, to bacteria they are like the Grand Canyon... party central! MarblecoteTM is stain, heat and scratch resistant. Whilst very resilient (finished with ceramic coating), it is not bulletproof. So if someone drops a brick on it (yes, we’ve had that happen!) damage will occur. Unlike other benchtops, damage like that can be repaired in around one hour and the repair won’t be visible. MarblecoteTM is handcrafted so that each benchtop is unique and there’s a three year warranty. Cost comparison - the MarblecoteTM System if one quarter to one fifth the cost of a new replacement bench. For contact details and website, please refer to the advertisement below. 12 Queensland’s leading celebration of sculpture returns as the 2025 Brisbane Sculpture Festival transforms the stunning Mt Coottha Botanic Gardens into a vibrant outdoor gallery filled with creativity, imagination, and bold artistic expression. Presented by Sculptors Queensland, the festival features a combination of indoor and outdoor exhibitions showcasing works by some of the state’s most prominent and emerging sculptors. This much-loved annual event is free to attend, and all artworks are available for purchase. President of Sculptors Queensland Belinda Dekker said they’re proud to present an exhibition that honours the founders, Dr Leonard and Dr Kathleen Shillam, and showcases the incredible talent within Queensland’s sculptural community. “We invite viewers, artists and aspiring artists to experience the works in the spectacular Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens our long-standing home of the Brisbane Sculpture Festival. “Our diverse membership is growing and continuing to develop Queensland sculpture for generations to come. Curator Colleen Lavender explains that the festival embraces sculpture in all its forms. “Sculpture is a broad spectrum of styles and techniques. Personally my favourite sculpture captures the essence of the subject and shows the interpretation through the Artist’s lens. This exhibition takes viewers on a journey through diverse perspectives, stories, and textures—a true feast for the eyes and mind. I invite guests to escape the everyday and step into something magical.” The festival includes both an indoor exhibition and an outdoor sculpture trail, with separate competition categories. Prices start from just $50, making the artworks accessible to collectors and first-time buyers alike. Every sculpture is listed in an online catalogue and can be explored via QR codes throughout the gardens. The prestigious $1,500 Shillam Prize, named in honour of Sculptors Queensland’s founders, will be awarded to the most outstanding sculpture. The prize recognises a work of lasting material quality that demonstrates excellence in form, concept, and execution. Key Dates Outdoor Exhibition: Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens until Tuesday 14 October (open daily, 8am – 4pm) Location: Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens & Mt Coot-tha Auditorium Admission: Free (registration required) More info: sculptorsqld.org.au/ brisbane-sculpture-festival-2 Brisbane Sculpture Festival Returns to Mt Coot-tha With a legacy spanning over four decades, Vision Michael Hare Optometrists is a trusted name in optometric care on the Gold Coast. Operating from Southport, Benowa, Burleigh, and Paradise Point, the practice is renowned for its dedication to patient-focused care and cutting-edge technology. Michael Hare, founder and leader of the practice, along with co-owner Jonathan McCorriston, emphasises the importance of staying ahead in the ever-evolving field of eye health. “We’ve always prioritised investing in advanced technology because it allows us to provide the highest standard of care,” Jonathan explains. At the heart of their approach are comprehensive eye exams designed to not only correct vision but also detect early signs of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. The practice uses state-of-the-art equipment, including the Optos Monaco, which Jonathan describes as “a game-changer for patient care.” This advanced device provides ultra-widefield retinal imaging, capturing over 80% of the retina in a single image. “With the Optos, we can assess both the macula and peripheral retina quickly and effectively, ensuring we catch potential issues early,” he says. In addition to early detection, the technology enhances patient education. “We can show patients their retinal images in real time, which helps them understand their eye health better,” Jonathan notes. The team at Vision Michael Hare Optometrists is equally committed to fostering long-term relationships with their patients. This approach is reflected in their ongoing investment in innovative solutions to monitor and manage eye conditions over time. “Independent optometry is about playing to our strengths - our expertise and the personalised care we provide,” Jonathan says. “Our goal is to not only protect but also enhance the vision and quality of life for every patient who walks through our doors.” With its combination of advanced technology, experienced professionals, and patient-centred care, Vision Michael Hare Optometrists continues to set a benchmark for excellence in eye care. Whether for routine exams or managing complex conditions, the practice remains a trusted partner in eye health. 17 Inspire! is the Gold Coast’s first dementia-friendly choir, welcoming people living with dementia, their care partners and community to enjoy singing together. Inspire! choir’s 100 + registered members are people impacted directly or indirectly by dementia, singing with a diverse group of community volunteers. Together they are breaking barriers, raising awareness of dementia and helping create a more inclusive Gold Coast. And they have fun! Rehearsals at held Varsity Lakes Community Resource Centre. On the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month, 50 to 70 people join choir leader Anne Ryan and live musicians, singing songs from popular musicals to Beatles and ABBA classics. Everyone in the choir loves to sing. Catherine, Rose, Tina and Jo come with their daughters. Ian, Cherry, Peter, Robert, Ray and others with carer-spouses. Sandra with her brother. Friends or support workers bring Lyn, Graham, Vera, Anthony. There are beginners and advanced singers, singing solo or ensemble, playing percussion, often spontaneously dancing. Inspire! Choir Community Why create a ‘dementia-friendly’ choir? Music can evoke memories, enhance mood and alleviate anxiety. For people living with dementia and their families, singing together lifts spirits and gets people moving and mingling. Absence of judgment reduces the stigma and isolation experienced by those living with this confronting illness. Joy, connection and friendship work as antidotes to depression, confusion and loneliness. Now in its second year, the choir is a place to share experiences and offer support and advocacy through challenging transitions. Dementia on the Gold Coast ‘Dementia’ describes the symptoms of a large group of illnesses causing a progressive decline in functioning, such as loss of memory, rationality, social skills and physical functioning. It is the second leading cause of death in Australia. While more common after the age of 65, younger onset dementia can occur decades earlier. Currently 11,063 Gold Coast residents are living with a diagnosis of dementia. Over 7,000 remain at home, including 2,400 living alone. Ref. A Slowly Dying Cause by Elizabeth George In Cornwall, a man suffers a violent death – and the killer may lurk within the community . . . Featuring Detectives Barbara Havers and Thomas Lynley, A Slowly Dying Cause is an atmospheric, gripping crime thriller from bestselling author Elizabeth George. Amid the beauty of Cornwall’s coastline, the death of a local man shatters the peace with its violence. The body of Michael Lobb was discovered in his family’s tin and pewter workshop, and Detective Inspector Beatrice Hannaford is brought in to investigate. Suspicion quickly develops when it emerges that a mining company had been trying to buy the man’s land, and Lobb was the only remaining obstacle to the deal going through. But every step of Bea’s investigation provokes more questions than answers, and the complexity of the case develops further as Lobb’s family life, rife with mistrust and deception, comes to light. With cryptic alibis and shifting motives, the tangled web of intrigue soon draws in her colleagues Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers, who must search for a killer in a community that has very little trust in outsiders . . . Author Information Elizabeth George is the no. 1 New York Times, Times and Der Spiegel bestselling author of more than twenty British crime novels featuring Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley.
