ANZAC Day - Saturday, 25 April 2026 ...will once again bring the Gold Coast community together in a powerful display of remembrance, respect and unity. Across the coastline, a series of dawn services, marches and commemorative events will honour the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand defence personnel. One of the most iconic gatherings will take place at Currumbin, where thousands are expected to assemble before sunrise for the moving Dawn Service at Elephant Rock. Proceedings begin in the early hours, with a march stepping off before 5:00am, followed by the solemn service as the sun rises over the ocean—a tradition that continues to draw large crowds each year. Further north, Surfers Paradise will host a full program of events, including a pre-dawn march along Beach Road, a Dawn Service at the beachfront cenotaph, and a midday commemorative service at Cavill Park. Meanwhile, Southport’s Broadwater Parklands will again provide a reflective setting for a well-attended Dawn Service, offering locals a central location to pay their respects. Community-based commemorations will also take place across suburbs such as Robina, Upper Coomera and Mudgeeraba, where marches, services and even art exhibitions highlight the enduring significance of ANZAC Day at a local level. Many of these events include traditional elements and veteran-led ceremonies, creating opportunities for all generations to connect with the ANZAC legacy. Whether attending a large coastal service or a smaller suburban tribute, Gold Coast residents and visitors alike are encouraged to pause, reflect and remember. In 2026, as in years past, the spirit of the ANZACs will be honoured not only in ceremony, but in the strong sense of community that defines the day. Check your local facebook pages and community pages online for your local commemorations.

2 It’s one of the most common things people say when they first come for a hearing test. But the solution isn’t always as simple as buying hearing aids. Many people assume hearing care is simple: book a hearing test, buy hearing aids, and the problem is solved. In reality, hearing is more complex. Your ears collect sound, but your brain must interpret speech, filter background noise, and keep conversations flowing. That’s why people with similar hearing loss can have very different outcomes depending on the quality of care and support they receive. Before choosing a hearing clinic, it’s worth asking a few important questions. 1. Is it a quick screening or a full hearing assessment? Many retail hearing centres advertise free hearing tests, which can sound appealing when you’re first exploring your hearing. However, it’s useful to know that many of these are screenings rather than full diagnostic assessments. A screening may simply check a few tones across low, mid and high pitches to see if hearing loss might be present. A comprehensive assessment measures hearing in greater detail and may include tests that explore speech understanding in noise or extended high-frequency hearing. These can help explain why someone might say, “I can hear people talking, but I can’t always understand them.” 2. What additional services are available? Hearing care can involve more than hearing aids. Some clinics offer specialised services such as tinnitus management, auditory processing assessments, and guidance around listening fatigue and cognitive load. These services recognise that hearing challenges can affect communication, concentration, and overall wellbeing. 3. Does the clinic test hearing beyond the basics? Some clinics go further than standard hearing tests by assessing extended high-frequency hearing and speech-in-noise (SPiN) performance. These tests help explain difficulties many people experience in restaurants, family gatherings, or other noisy environments. Clinics may also use video otoscopy, allowing patients to see the ear canal and eardrum on screen. Many provide detailed reports to GPs, sometimes including images, to support coordinated care. 4. How carefully are hearing aids fitted? Programming hearing aids properly is both a science and a skill. An essential step called Real Ear Measurement (REM) involves placing a tiny microphone in the ear canal to measure how the hearing aid performs inside the ear. This ensures the device delivers the correct prescription for that individual hearing loss. When rushed or skipped, hearing aids may sound loud but not clear — and too often end up sitting in the top drawer instead of being worn every day. 5. What support and maintenance are available? Hearing care rarely ends on the day devices are fitted. Follow-up visits, adjustments, and ongoing support are often what transform hearing aids into life-changing tools. Some clinics also offer professional cleaning and drying systems — such as Redux technology — to remove moisture and keep devices performing reliably. Choosing a hearing clinic isn’t just about technology. It’s about finding a team that takes the time to understand your hearing, support your progress, and help you stay connected to the conversations that matter most. Holistic Hearing Solutions Independent, clinician-led hearing care (see advert front cover) Five Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Hearing Clinic Because better hearing involves more than just hearing aids “I can hear people talking… but I can’t always understand them.” yet it can also surprise you if you’re not expecting the steering wheel to gently nudge back. Adaptive cruise control is brilliant on the motorway, but it’s important to know how following distance works, how the car responds to braking, and when you should take back full control (especially in heavy traffic or bad weather). Then there’s the touchscreen factor. When everything is inside a menu — air con, audio, navigation — it’s easy to feel distracted. A few small changes can make a big difference: setting up your favourites, learning voice controls, and practising key functions while parked so you’re not learning them on the move. At Spotto Driving School, we help drivers get comfortable with newcar tech in real-world conditions, at a pace that feels supportive and pressure-free. We’ll show you what to trust, what to double-check, and how to use these features as tools — not crutches. Because confidence isn’t about pressing every button. It’s about understanding your car, staying in control, and enjoying the freedom that comes with driving without second-guessing yourself. New Car, New Tech: How to Actually Feel Confident Using It New cars are brilliant — but they can also feel like you’ve accidentally bought a computer with wheels. Between touchscreens, beeps, cameras, and driver-assist features, it’s completely normal to wonder what’s helping… and what’s just distracting. For many drivers in their 50s, the biggest adjustment isn’t the driving itself — it’s learning the new language of modern cars. Lane assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, reverse cameras, auto emergency braking… it’s a lot. And if you’ve upgraded from an older vehicle, you might find yourself second-guessing what the car is doing, or feeling startled when it “steps in” unexpectedly. The good news? You don’t need to be “techy” to drive a modern car confidently. You just need a calm, practical run-through of the features you’ll use every day — and a clear understanding of what they can (and can’t) do. Reverse cameras and sensors are fantastic for tight car parks, but they don’t replace turning your head and checking your surroundings. Blind-spot monitoring can be a great extra set of eyes, but it’s still possible for a motorbike or fast-moving car to appear quickly. Lane assist can reduce fatigue on longer drives,

With the introduction of the Support at Home Program on 1 November 2025, understanding how to plan financially for home care is more important than ever. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, we know navigating in-home care costs can feel overwhelming, particularly when families are balancing changing health needs, personal responsibilities and government funding systems. Understanding the new framework can make planning ahead far simpler. The Support at Home Program replaced the previous Home Care Packages and Short-Term Restorative Care programs, creating a streamlined approach to accessing services. Funding is now service-based rather than package-based, with budgets allocated quarterly. The program introduces eight funding levels, ranging from approximately $2,600 to $19,400 per quarter, depending on a person’s assessed care needs. A small portion of unused funding—up to 10 per cent or $1,000 per quarter—can also roll over. Funding can be used for a wide range of supports that help people remain comfortable and independent at home. These include everyday assistance such as cooking, light domestic support, lawn mowing and transport, as well as personal care like showering, dressing and mobility support. Clinical services such as nursing care, physiotherapy, medication management and wound care may also be included. While government funding covers a significant portion of care costs, most people will still be expected to contribute something. Contributions are income-tested and assessed by Services Australia. Full Age Pensioners generally pay little or no cocontribution, while self-funded retirees may contribute more. Importantly, these contributions become part of the overall care budget, meaning they help increase the level of support available. Additional funding streams are also available. Assistive Technology and Home Modifications funding can help cover items such as grab rails, mobility aids, or larger home adjustments like ramps or accessible bathrooms. Shortterm restorative care funding—up to $12,000—may support recovery after illness or surgery, while an end-of-life pathway provides additional funding for palliative care delivered at home. Accessing support begins with an aged care assessment through My Aged Care. Once eligibility and funding levels are confirmed, care providers work with families to create a personalised care plan that matches individual needs and budget. For many Australians, in-home care offers a practical and flexible alternative to residential care. With the right planning and support, it can help older Australians maintain independence, comfort and familiar surroundings for longer. Home Care Assistance Gold Coast helps families navigate assessments, funding and personalised care planning, making the journey to supported living at home clearer and more manageable. 6 The right vision solutions can help you stay active with greater comfort, safety and confidence. Many Australians enjoy pursuits such as golf, cycling, walking, tennis and boating, as well as the increasingly popular game of pickleball. These activities help maintain fitness, independence and social connection. In Queensland’s sunny outdoor climate, many take place in bright conditions where good eye protection becomes especially important. According to optometrist Michael Hare of VISION Michael Hare Eyecare Plus Optometrists, the right eyewear—chosen with personalised professional advice—can make a significant difference to comfort and visual clarity outdoors. “Specialised sport eyewear helps reduce glare, enhance contrast and protect the eyes from wind, dust and debris,” he explains. “Clear vision is essential not only for performance but also for safety.” While people often invest in good footwear or equipment, eye protection is sometimes overlooked. Many people are surprised how much the right eyewear can improve confidence and comfort during outdoor activities. Good vision also helps us judge distance, track a moving ball and navigate uneven terrain. Vision Options for Active Lifestyles Different activities may benefit from different vision solutions, depending on individual vision needs and preferences. Polarised sunglasses are particularly helpful for outdoor activities such as cycling, golf, boating and walking. By reducing glare from reflective surfaces such as water, sand and roads, polarised lenses improve visual comfort and clarity in bright conditions. Many premium sunglass brands, including Maui Jim, use technologies such as PolarizedPlus2, which combine polarisation with colourenhancing treatments to reduce glare while improving contrast. Contact lenses can also be useful for active pursuits. They provide a wider field of vision than glasses and eliminate issues such as fogging or frame movement during sport. Daily disposable lenses are often recommended because they are hygienic, comfortable and convenient for activities such as tennis, pickleball or gym training. Prescription sport eyewear is another option for people who prefer the stability and protection of glasses. Wraparound frames help shield the eyes from wind and debris while staying secure during movement, and many designs can be fitted with prescription lenses. Optometrist Jonathan McCorriston also emphasises the importance of ultraviolet protection when spending time outdoors. “Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can increase the risk of several eye conditions, including cataracts and macular degeneration,” he says. “Quality sunglasses that provide 100 per cent UV protection are an important part of maintaining long-term eye health.” “Staying active is incredibly important for healthy ageing,” adds Michael Hare. “With the right eyewear, people can continue enjoying the activities they love while protecting their vision.” If you would like advice about vision options for your favourite activities, a professional eye examination can help identify what works best for you. Recommended as the first point of contact is the National Link-Up program run by AIATSIS, Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. AIATSIS are specialist in this area being an indigenous led national institute that connects people with the heritage and cultures of Australia’s First People. To begin gather all information you may already have including photos, accounts of family knowledge and write down stories spoken about with family. Ask relatives for input and possible records they may have to start your enquiries with AIATSIS. Once indigenous connection and information is gathered the search for associated family will lead, hopefully, to a fuller ancestral line. This will be achieved combining the institutes information with other resources like birth, death and marriage registers, census records, electoral rolls, historical newspaper articles, rate notices, land purchases and many other. GCFHS may be able to help with these other avenues of research. Genealogy is a wonderful and rewarding pass time but can be very emotional. Make sure you have support and be prepared for the things that are hard to hear. Hopefully there will be a lot gained from the answers and history discovered. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. Affordable Gourmet: Stretch Your Food Budget with Snap-Frozen Meals The rising cost of living is impacting households across Australia. From groceries and fuel to utilities and dining out, it feels like prices are increasing everywhere, and food is often one of the first areas families look to rein in spending. The challenge is finding ways to save money without sacrificing nutrition, flavour, or convenience. This is where snap-frozen meals can offer a practical and cost-effective solution, especially when they are prepared by professionals who understand balance, portion control, and real-world budgets. At Gourmet Meals, our range is designed to help Australians eat well, spend less, and reclaim valuable time, all while enjoying meals that feel comforting, familiar, and satisfying. When food prices rise, many people fall into one of two traps: overspending on convenience food or cutting corners with lower-quality ingredients. Both options can cost more in the long run, financially and nutritionally. Snap-frozen meals remove the guesswork. With fixed pricing, controlled portions, and no food waste, you know exactly what you’re spending per meal. There’s no impulse buying, no unused ingredients ending up in the bin, and no last-minute takeaway orders when time runs out. Gourmet Meals are prepared by internationally trained chefs and snap-frozen to lock in flavour and nutrients, ready whenever you are. This means fewer trips to the supermarket, less stress around meal planning, and greater consistency week to week. One of the biggest benefits of Gourmet Meals is transparent pricing across all categories, allowing you to choose what works for your appetite, lifestyle, and budget. 10 Some of the most striking tropical foliage plants rely on the heat and humidity of Gold Coast summers. Many of them originate as understorey plants in rainforest, usually where there’s a gap allowing a little extra sunlight. Collected by intrepid plant collectors in the 18th and 19th century some plants, including the Sander’s Alocasia, are on the road to extinction in the wild. Listed by the International Union for Conservation in Nature (IUCN )as Critically Endangered it is endemic to Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Botanically named Alocasia sanderiana for Orchid Collector and Orchid Trader Henry F.C Sanders who described it in 1884 and brought it into popularity in the late 18th Century as ‘the finest variegated plant introduced into Europe’. Available from his nursery it was advertised for 2 Guineas, and today the true species it outside the reach of the average gardener. Sander’s Alocasia has been hybridised and there are now several hybrid cultivar forms that are affordable and available. (Pictured a hybrid form) Another stunning tropical foliage plant is Persian Shield, a stunning contrast to the deep glossy green and creamed veined, arrow-shaped leaves of Sander’s Alocasia. Botanically Strobilanthes dyerianus, Persian Shield belies its common name as its origins are in the forests of Myanmar. Vibrant pink markings across deep green upper leaves, with a deep purple leaf undersurface make this a standout, especially if planted close to a light green foliage plant. As the plant matures the leaves become larger and even more prominent. At home in filtered light, Persian Shield benefits form the occasional light prune, and appreciates a warm, moist, (not wet) location away from wind. Sanders Alocasia is a member of the Araceae family which includes over 100 Genera. Many are popular indoor and shade loving plants with similar flowers. Some are irritants or toxic - among them are Alocasia, Anthurium, Diffenbachia, Philodendron, Peace Lilies, Arum Lilies and more. All demand thoughtful placement in the garden. People might judge us at the checkout.” Sister Sarah smiled and said, “Don’t worry, Sister, I can handle this.” She grabbed two six-packs and confidently marched to the register. The cashier stared in surprise at the two nuns buying beer. Breaking the awkward silence, Sister Sarah said, completely straight-faced, “We use beer to wash our hair. It’s a very good shampoo.” Without missing a beat, the cashier reached under the counter, tossed a pack of pretzel sticks on top of the beer, and said, “The curlers are on the house.”

13 Dental Health and Dentures What are the types of Denture Adhesives? Paste application. Apply this denture adhesive to a dry or preferably wet denture. Avoid placing adhesive close to the denture borders. If the adhesive oozes, use less of the product. For dentures on the upper jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - along the ridge area and one down the centre. For dentures on the lower jaw, apply three short strips of adhesive - or a series of small dots - in the centreof the ridge area. Powder application. Sprinkle a thin, uniform layer throughout the tissue-bearing surface of the denture. Shake off excess powder and press the denture into place. Powders may be preferred over pastes because they are easier to clean off the denture and tissue. In addition, they don’t have the same tendency as pastes do to “shim” (keep the denture away from the tissue). Will Dentures Change How I Speak? After getting dentures, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words. If so, practice by saying the difficult words out loud. With practice and with time you will become accustomed to speaking properly with dentures. If dentures “click” while you’re talking, contact your dentist. Dentures may occasionally slip when you laugh, cough, or smile. Reposition the dentures by gently biting down and swallowing. If any speaking problem persists, consult your dentist or prosthodontist. Are Dentures Worn 24 Hours a Day? Your dentist or prosthodontist will instruct you as to how long to wear dentures and when to remove them. During the first several days after receiving your denture, you may be asked to wear it all the time, including while you sleep. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it is the quickest way to identify the areas on the denture that may need adjustment. Once adjustments are made, you should remove dentures before going to bed. This allows gum tissues to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. The denture can be put back in the mouth in the morning. Should I Use a Denture Adhesive? A denture adhesive may be considered under the following circumstances: • To enhance satisfaction with a properly constructed denture. Adhesives enhance retention, stability, bite force, and an individual’s sense of security. • To assist individuals with dry mouth conditions that lessen denture adherence, such as individuals taking cold medications, those with neurologic disabilities including strokes, and the elderly. • To provide added stability and security for those who place unusual demands on facial muscles, such as public speakers or musicians. We’ll have more tomorrow, so please come back then.” She nods and walks away. A few minutes later, she returns and taps him again. “Sir, I was wondering where I could find the spinach?” Confused, the grocer says, “Ma’am, we are out of spinach today. We’ll have more tomorrow morning.” She smiles and thanks him, then walks off again. Moments later… tap tap tap. “Pardon me, but do you know where the spinach is?” Now visibly irritated, the grocer says, “Let me ask you something. How do you spell ‘dog,’ like in dogmatic?” She replies, “D-O-G.” “Good. Now, how do you spell ‘cat,’ like in catatonic?” “C-A-T.” “Perfect,” says the grocer. “Now, how do you spell ‘freakin’, as in spinach?” She pauses. “F-… wait a second… there’s no F in spinach.” The grocer throws his hands up and shouts, “LADY, THAT’S WHAT I’M TRYING TO TELL YOU!” f y d e l s a l m WordWheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. 15 In the intricate workings of the human body, the eyes are remarkable organs that require a myriad of nutrients to function optimally and stave off diseases. The adage “you are what you eat” holds particularly true when it comes to maintaining eye health. A balanced diet is not just beneficial for your waistline but also for your eyesight. The connection between nutrition and eye health is well-established. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play pivotal roles in maintaining eye health and preventing conditions like cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting the eyes from oxidative stress that can lead to chronic eye diseases. Vitamin C, found abundantly in citrus fruits and vegetables, supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. It’s believed to combat cataract formation and, when combined with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of AMD and visual acuity loss. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, can be sourced from nuts and seeds and contributes to cell protection from free radicals. Zinc, a mineral present in high concentrations in the eyes, plays a crucial role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina, aiding in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Meat, poultry, fish, and legumes are excellent sources of zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. They are natural sunblock for the eyes, filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protecting against oxidative damage. Leafy greens, eggs, and other foods are rich in these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are vital for cell membrane health in the retina and may help prevent AMD. Fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3s. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, exemplifies a dietary pattern that supports eye health. It’s not just about individual nutrients; the synergy of a nutrient-rich diet contributes to overall eye health and function. The significance of nutrition in eye health cannot be overstated. As we age, our eyes are susceptible to various conditions, but a diet rich in specific nutrients can help protect our vision. It’s a simple yet powerful truth: the food we consume can have a profound impact on our eyesight. Schedule Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting potential eye conditions before they manifest symptoms and cause irreversible vision loss or blindness.
