Critical health checks a focus of Gold Coast health forum The saying that ‘prevention is better than cure’ may be centuries old but it is just as apt today as it has ever been. Australians have one of the longest life expectancies in the world due to successful and sustained prevention programs and a world leading health system. However, figures published in the Australian Government’s National Preventive Health Strategy 2021-2030 also show that more Australians are now living with and suffering from chronic illness than ever. Over the past 50 years, the prevalence of chronic conditions has increased, leading to increased pressure on the health system and cost to the economy from cancer, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, and mental and substance use disorders. It is estimated, however, that a significant portion of this burden could be prevented through a reduction in risk factors such as overweight and obesity, poor diet, lack of physical inactivity, high alcohol consumption, and high blood pressure. There’s no doubt that prevention is one of the smartest investments we all can make – for our health, for our economy, and for the future sustainability of our health system. Annual health checks are a great way to stay on top of your health goals and catch potential issues early, and there are several health conditions that can start to affect you in your 50s, most of which have few obvious symptoms. So, if you’re over 50, annual health checks are recommended, and it’s never too late to start. An annual health check helps you and your healthcare providers keep track of your health and work on strategies to reduce your risk of developing prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Special event Health Consumers Queensland has partnered with My Health for Life, a Health and Wellbeing Queensland initiative, to host a Preventative Health Village at its Annual Forum on 28 April, at Southport Sharks Event Centre. My Health for Life will conduct free 10-minute health assessments to forum attendees to identify risk factors, and each participant will be provided with their result, along with an explanation of what their score means and what their most appropriate next steps might be within the My Health for Life program. The Preventative Health Village will also provide helpful resources and representatives on hand to discuss other important health check programs including diabetes, bowel, breast and cervical screening. The Health Consumers Queensland 2026 Annual Forum will also provide a program of guest speakers, including popular performer, author, and passionate advocate for health issues, Jean Kittson AM, panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and interactive workshops that will focus on the power of consumers and carers in the community to drive meaningful improvements in healthcare services and access to them. Entry to the Forum is free but pre-registration is essential. Find out more about the event and register at https://www. hcq.org.au/about-us/annualforum2026-2/
