10 Some of the most striking tropical foliage plants rely on the heat and humidity of Gold Coast summers. Many of them originate as understorey plants in rainforest, usually where there’s a gap allowing a little extra sunlight. Collected by intrepid plant collectors in the 18th and 19th century some plants, including the Sander’s Alocasia, are on the road to extinction in the wild. Listed by the International Union for Conservation in Nature (IUCN )as Critically Endangered it is endemic to Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Botanically named Alocasia sanderiana for Orchid Collector and Orchid Trader Henry F.C Sanders who described it in 1884 and brought it into popularity in the late 18th Century as ‘the finest variegated plant introduced into Europe’. Available from his nursery it was advertised for 2 Guineas, and today the true species it outside the reach of the average gardener. Sander’s Alocasia has been hybridised and there are now several hybrid cultivar forms that are affordable and available. (Pictured a hybrid form) Another stunning tropical foliage plant is Persian Shield, a stunning contrast to the deep glossy green and creamed veined, arrow-shaped leaves of Sander’s Alocasia. Botanically Strobilanthes dyerianus, Persian Shield belies its common name as its origins are in the forests of Myanmar. Vibrant pink markings across deep green upper leaves, with a deep purple leaf undersurface make this a standout, especially if planted close to a light green foliage plant. As the plant matures the leaves become larger and even more prominent. At home in filtered light, Persian Shield benefits form the occasional light prune, and appreciates a warm, moist, (not wet) location away from wind. Sanders Alocasia is a member of the Araceae family which includes over 100 Genera. Many are popular indoor and shade loving plants with similar flowers. Some are irritants or toxic - among them are Alocasia, Anthurium, Diffenbachia, Philodendron, Peace Lilies, Arum Lilies and more. All demand thoughtful placement in the garden.
