The three-month campaign, running through to August 31, challenges emergency services across the country to get involved and highlights the urgent need for plasma, blood and platelet donations. Among those involved in the challenge and donating to the cause is Senior Constable Karen Watson, who celebrated a significant milestone, having marked her 450th donation. Senior Constable Watson has been donating regularly since she was 18 years old and encourages everyone to participate. “I just feel very blessed to have enjoyed good health and being able to share it,” Senior Constable Watson said. “Donating blood and plasma is now a regular activity for me and I plan to continue donating as long as I possibly can. Blood donations typically decline during the colder months as people become more susceptible to sickness and are unable to donate, so it’s an especially critical time for donations. As a police officer, I have seen firsthand the impact of blood donations and how far they go in saving lives. It’s an incredibly easy process and I encourage everyone to get involved.” Emergency services personnel witness the impacts of blood donations on a regular basis, when responding to trauma and medical emergencies and by taking part in the drive – they are directly serving their communities in more ways than one. As demand for blood and plasma continues to increase at record levels, Lifeblood spokesperson Liam Richardson said he hopes the Queensland community will follow the lead of their inspiring emergency services and book a donation. “Every day, we issue close to 10,000 blood products and medications to hospitals around the country to meet patient demand, and we would love to see more people in Queensland support our emergency services and join our movement of donors,” Mr Richardson said. To make a donation, call 13 14 95, book online at lifeblood.com.au or download the DonateBlood App.

With advances in nutrition and food technology, today’s high-quality frozen meals can be packed with nutrients and flavour, offering. A question that often comes up is how to treat adopted children on your tree. Naturally, it is important not to cause any offence – most adoptees are considered full relatives – so there are a couple of ways to handle this situation. If you want your tree to reflect the way folks lived as a family then you might choose to record the adopted person as a full child to the parents. This would cause all relatives to be shown in the same way as those of that couple’s natural children. If the aim is for your tree to be fully genealogically accurate then these children should be recorded under their birth names and their parents would be their birth parents – as far as that information is available. Depending on the program you are using you may be able to record both sets of parents as alternate facts - biological and adoptive. You may then be able to choose which of these is the preferred fact. A tree could be developed down the line of each set of parents giving you accurate DNA or lived experience information. Check how your program treats each of these scenarios when it comes to producing reports and remember – your tree your way. For help with producing your family tree, you may like to join the Gold Coast Family History Society. For a modest yearly fee, you will have access to a comprehensive library, many worldwide subscription websites, and fellow researchers prepared to help you get started or break down any brick walls you may encounter. 6 Making the decision that it is time to seek home care is important, but so is recognising when your home care plan needs changing. Creating a home care plan is not a once off task as the needs of the person receiving care can change as they age, or their health changes. As the situation changes, the home care plan must be adapted. The care that you or your loved one needs might change temporarily, or on an ongoing basis. At Home Care Assistance, our Care Professionals can work with you to adapt the home care plan for you or your loved, as needed, to ensure the right level of care is being provided. Sometimes care needs can change temporarily. When you or your loved one has had an accident, illness, or hospitalisation, a higher level of care may be required for a period of time. This might involve extra help with household chores, personal care, getting to appointments, taking medications, or adhering to a rehabilitation program. Our hospital to the home program is specifically set up to help with this situation, but anytime care levels need to be adjusted, please talk to our Care Professionals so we can discuss the changing needs and ensure the right support is given. Home care plans can also need changing as you or your loved one’s needs change. As a person ages, there may be more tasks that they require assistance with. Initially, assistance may just be required for a few tasks such as doing the shopping and preparing meals. This might be provided with care for a few hours a week. Over time, these needs may evolve to needing help with medication, personal care, When your situation changes: Adapting your Home Care Plan eating, and even having someone on hand to avoid distress of getting confused when being at home alone. This may require evaluating whether a shift to full-time home care is required, or just some extra hours each week. There may also be situations where a loved-one has been providing some care to complement the care provided by Care Professionals in the home care plan. This loved one’s situation may change so they are not able to provide care as they were. This may also mean a revision to the home care plan is needed. Our Care Professionals have a wide range of skills they can provide, and care-plans can be adapted as needs change. One of the advantages of having a home care plan with Home Care Assistance is we can adapt to the changing needs of you or your loved one, without the need for you to have to find further staff or juggle schedules. At Home Care Assistance we take the headache out of adjusting the care-plan by ensuring the right level of care is provided by the right staff. All you need to do is let us know that the care plan of yourself or your loved one needs changing. Our staff may also raise a need to alter the home-care plan for your or your loved one with you when we notice a change in care needs. If you have noticed that there are activities your loved is struggling with that are not in their home care plan, please either let the office or care professional know so we can discuss the changing needs and appropriate supports of your loved one. 8 Many millions of dollars in deceased estates are going to state and territory governments because authorities are unable to find a beneficiary to inherit the money. The Queensland Government recently divulged the extent of the transfer in that state alone. Between 2020 and 2024, the Public Trustee transferred $2.95 million from 10 estates to Queensland Treasury, with the funds put into consolidated revenue. According to ABC News, most of the funds came from a single estate worth $2 million that was given to the State Government in 2021. The Queensland Public Trustee says funds are transferred to the state when potential beneficiaries die before the owner of the deceased estate. It can also happen when a beneficiary is identifiable but cannot be tracked down. The Public Trustee is authorised to hold onto the funds for six years to allow potential claimants to come forward or be located. Public Trustee, Samay Zhouand, told the ABC his office did the “utmost within its powers” to find beneficiaries of deceased estates before transferring those funds to Treasury. “Should a beneficiary emerge in the future, those funds remain available without time limit to those beneficiaries to claim,” he said. This is known as dying in intestate, with the deceased’s estate distributed to next of kin in line with the Act. But it cannot go to relatives who are more remote than first cousins. The former Labor government began a review of the Succession Act in 2023, but did not finish it before leaving office in October 2024. New Attorney-General, Deb Frecklington, said she had requested a comprehensive briefing of the review. According to the ABC, possible changes could include banning adult children from contesting their parents’ will if the estate is worth less than $250,000, as well as changing the definition of a spouse. Time to review your will While it is common to put the will in a bottom drawer and forget about it until it’s needed, experts say we should review our wills, and estate plans every two to three years. There are two main ways to make a will: With qualified professional. A solicitor or lawyer can help you with this. State and Territory Public Trustee offices may provide a free service to help you make your will. Self-made wills. You can purchase a will kit from a newsagent or post office, or download one from the internet. It’s important to complete these very carefully as the wording or terms used in self-made wills might not achieve the outcomes you want. What happens if you die without a will? If you die without a will in place, the law determines who will benefit from your estate. The law follows a line of relationship for those who benefit starting with your spouse and children. The line of relationship can go right down to first cousins. In some cases, genealogists have had to be engaged to identify the family tree. If you want to make sure you get to determine who benefits from your estate, having a will means that your wishes are legally documented and must be followed. The Gold Coast is a vibrant, welcoming region with plenty of ways to stay socially engaged and enjoy the best years of your life. Expanding Your Social Circle on the Coast

10 Before mobile phones and their handy cameras, there were occasions when I was captivated by an unnamed plant and could only rely on keeping its appearance in my memory. This was the case with a Rose Grape, first seen as a glorious, flowering potted plant in a stationery shop in Italy in 1996. I was able to learn its name when I came across a Rose Grape Medinilla magnifica in all its exotic, tropical bloom in a basket at the floral pavilion at Floriade in the Netherlands in 2012 (pictured). Little did I know that there are over 300 species of Medinilla, native to South-East Asia, New Guinea, India, and western parts of tropical Africa. Several species including a climbing Daintree Medinilla - Medinilla balls-headleyi are native to far north Queensland. Belonging to the Plant Family Melastomataceae means they are related to popular Tibouchina plants. Learning they are a species that thrive in the warmth and humidity of the tropics would suggest they would be a challenge with our cooler, drier winters. Not so! Some species are epiphytic in nature, growing on tree trunks, otherwise as shrubs. The Medinilla species we have grown have all had woody stems, large deeply veined, leathery leaves, and masses of delicate flowers hanging in long panicles from the branches. Bright pink or burgundy inedible berries follow. Finally, some years ago we were able to purchase a Pink Lantern - Medinilla myriantha. It’s not quite up to the brilliance of Rose Grape but is thriving and flowering almost all year as a pot plant (pictured) in a sheltered, warm location in our courtyard. We also propagated cuttings of Orange-Coral Medinilla - Medinilla scortechini (pictured close-up flowers) which we’ll soon plant at home. Apart from the Daintree Medinilla, those mentioned have now become available at some nurseries and all are worthy of locating in your garden or as a pot plant. Remember – no frost, a warm, sheltered location, and in the morning sun or bright shade. Pruning is only necessary to maintain the shape suited to your garden. Good drainage is important with moderate watering. Footnote : The Netherlands will no longer host its world horticultural expo Floriade. The Dutch Horticultural Council (NTR) announced the end of Floriade which blossomed once every decade from the 1960’s. 11 Regular eye tests with an optometrist can help make sure your eyes are in good health. They can pick up problems with your eyes before you notice anything. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see an optometrist for an eye test. Regular eye testing is important for early detection of health problems such as Cataracts, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration and even Pterygiums, that’s why we recommend yearly check-ups. The earlier these problems are diagnosed, the sooner you can get treated. This will improve your vision outcomes. Eye tests can also help identify if you have trouble seeing at different distances. You optometrist can give you glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision. You should see a doctor or organise an eye test if you notice any symptoms with your eyes or changes to your vision. CALL SOMEONE WHO CARES! Custom made aesthetically designed natural looking dentures that you can wear with a confident smile. DENTURES DIRECT TO PUBLIC Registered with the Dental Board of Australia & Australian Dental Prosthetist Assoc. Ltd Common Denture Problems A common problem among denture wearers is ill-fitting dentures, which cause pain. Pain is directly related to the way dentures fit. When a denture rests snuggly against the gums and doesn’t slide around, then pain shouldn’t be an issue. But when dentures begin to rub against the gums, it leads to soreness and swelling. Left untreated, this can make wearing dentures intolerable. If dentures don’t fit well and you experience pain, you are likely to eat less or eat softer foods. Not eating foods that you used to enjoy is another sign of unstable or uncomfortable dentures. Poor diet and lower nutritional intake could lead to a variety of health and digestive problems. Furthermore, ill-fitting dentures constantly rub on the gums and can create a callus, called an Epulis, which may require oral surgery to remove. Natural changes in the gums and jaw over time can be another factor that causes denture pain. Gums change, and over time bone underneath the gum can shrink. The change is progressive, so you may not notice it, and over time your dentures no longer fit properly. Fixing Denture Discomfort No matter what the cause, a dental health professional can fix ill fitting dentures. Three techniques are typically used: a simple denture adjustment can sometimes fix the problem however. Relining the denture will seat the denture closely to the shape of the gums therefore stabilizing the denture giving more comfort. Depending on the individual you should have your dentures relined every two to three years to compensate for the constant change in your jaw bone. Depending on the way you use your denture, for instance you could have a very hard bite or you could be grinding your teeth in your sleep or similar, your denture should last you from five to eight years. If your denture is worse for wear then a new denture is the solution. Remember wearing the same denture past its due by date is doing you no favours, it will certainly cause problems to your gums and your jawbone later on making it more difficult to get a proper fitting denture as you age. ‘http://www.agingcare. com/Articles/denture-care-for-falseteeth-148020.htm’ Don’t put up with pain and discomfort from your dentures

17 Slow Cooker Mango Chicken Using family-friendly chicken thighs, mango and coconut cream, this creamy chicken curry is made easier by cooking it in the slow cooker. • 2 tbsp yellow curry paste • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 6 Chicken Thigh Fillets, trimmed, halved crossways • 500g pkt frozen mango cheeks, partially thawed, coarsely chopped (When mango is in season, substitute 500g of fresh mango pieces for this recipe). • 2 red capsicum, deseeded, thickly sliced • 1 large red onion, cut into wedges • 1 tbsp finely grated fresh ginger • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tbsp olive oil • 200ml UHT coconut cream (UHT coconut cream has been heat-treated and although rich and creamy it doesn’t curdle in the slow cooker. Swap for a 270ml can coconut cream if unavailable). • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 2 green shallots, thinly sliced • 2/3 cup fresh coriander leaves • 1 fresh long red chilli, thinly sliced • Lime wedges, to serve • Steamed rice, to serve Combine the curry paste and turmeric in a large bowl. Add the chicken, season and toss well to combine. Set aside. Place half the mango in a food processor and process until smooth. Transfer to the bowl of a slow cooker. Stir in 80ml (1/3 cup) water. Top with capsicum, onion, ginger and garlic. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook, turning, for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Add to the slow cooker bowl. Cover and cook on Low for 3 hours or until the chicken is starting to become tender. Add coconut cream to the slow cooker. Cover and cook on High for 1 hour or until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in the remaining mango along with the sugar. Cook for a further 10 minutes or until the mango has warmed through. Turn off slow cooker and set aside for 5 minutes to rest. Divide rice among serving plates. Add chicken and sprinkle with green shallots, coriander and chilli. Serve with lime wedges. SLOW COOKER SEASON!! Pear, berry and white chocolate cobbler • 4 pears, peeled, cored, cut into wedges • 300g Frozen Mixed Berries • 1/3 cup (75g) caster sugar • 1/4 cup (35g) plain flour • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste • 1 1/2 cup (225g) self-raising flour • 1 tbsp caster sugar, extra • 120g butter, chopped • 3/4 cup (185ml) buttermilk • 100g white chocolate, chopped • Vanilla ice cream, to serve • Any type of frozen or fresh berries will do. Apples work in place of pears in this dish too. Combine the pear, berries, sugar, plain flour and vanilla in a slow cooker. Set aside for 20 mins or until the berries begin to release their juices. Combine self-raising flour and extra sugar in a large bowl. Add butter. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre and pour in buttermilk. Stir until a soft, sticky dough forms. Stir in chocolate. Spoon the chocolate mixture evenly over the pear mixture in slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours or until the top is cooked through and the fruit is tender. Serve with ice cream. Prep 35m Cook 3h Serves 6 Prep 15m | Cook 4h | Serves 4
