MOJO RISIN’ - The Doors Experience Mo’s Desert Clubhouse | May 30th 2025 MUSIC Review In 1961, Rick & the Ravens was one of a stack of sound-alike USA surf bands who serviced the brand-new pop market. Members John, Ray, and Jim retitled the group part-way through ‘65 after signing up a guitarist called Robby. Because that’s what bands do. The renaming ended up being “The Doors”. A formation that would only last ‘til ‘71, when Jim Morrison sadly joined an informal list known as the “27 Club”. During that time - if there’s a stronger, meatier word than ‘iconic’ – then I don’t know it, The Doors wrote and released groundbreaking songs, underscored with their own look, their own font and controversial dramas in the wild counterculture of the day. You have to step back and admire, that after 60 years, many tracks lifted from ‘Best Of’ albums endure, like “Love Me Two Times”, “L.A. Woman”, “Touch Me” and “Light My Fire” which till make the weekly playlists of stations internationally. It takes bravery to honour Jim Morrison and the Doors’ fantastic music by performing as a Tribute Band. It’s why ‘Mojo Risin’ – The Doors Experience’ is a real risk for venue promoters. Mo’s Desert Clubhouse on Queensland’s Gold Coast took a punt that paid off. With their front man behind the same model microphone that Jim Morrison used, the eerie sounds of “Riders on the Storm” evilly raised hairs on the necks of patrons. There’s a valid reason. From behind the mysterious Clubhouse stage fog, emerged what seemed to be the ghost of Morrison. Michael Cavallaro has an uncanny resemblance to Jim which is no drawback to belief in apparitions. Mojo Risin’ created the experience of the L.A. Woman studio album and what it might have been like if Jim was alive to tour with it. His robust low register vocals delivered the lyrics with the band’s backing. All in the same key, all using same model instruments. This is a concerted effort by professional musos: Jeames Johnson, Damir Sisak, Dave Attard, Chenier Fitchette to break on through and embrace international excellence. You have to love them madly! www.thedoorsexperience.com.au Reviewed by Stu Robertson Photography by Michelle Cop (MC Photography)
