Sharing his interpretation of many of Farnsy’s hits, I pushed back into my seat and thought yeah, you’re the voice all right. Sung in the original key, musos playing with the original passion, so give me a reason why I couldn’t call this the best night ever. However, my personal test was yet to come - could Simon sing the high octave sustained note of “Help”? He did, a jaw-droppingly fantastic pitch that shook the audience into silence, then applause. As if by confirmation, this show has an aura around it already. 23 years ago on this same night, Farnham performed on this same stage. Take a bow, Simon! Don’t you know it’s magic! A must see. The dilemma is the music we cherish, the seductive love songs, the screaming Aussie anthems, the soulful scorchers will never be performed live again. And frankly it’s a part of our collective youth gone for good. Until... Until this production called “One Voice - Celebrating the Greatest Hits of John Farnham” came to Twin Towns Services Club. Strategically, the producers have side stepped the cheap look-a-like tribute show approach, waiting patiently to handpick Australia’s top in-demand, studio musicians and on-stage backing singers. The key component for an authentic delivery is the guy behind the mic and in front of the spotlight. A singer who admired John from side stage, was in the Australian group “1927”. They had a massive hit with “That’s When I Think of You” Simon Shapiro is polite, humble, likable and courteous - and Music Review Stepping back just a moment, you’d have to agree anyone touching the repertoire of living legend John Farnham risks a massive backlash. There’s a good reason for this. Farnham’s tick list of awesome musicians, backing vocalists, bubbly personality, good looks, flowing hair and his amazing voice is his own protection scheme against a plethora of B-grade Bowls Club buskers and C-grade corporate boardroom crooners.
