But is winter really a bad time to sell? Joe Farr from Platinum Properties says “The simple answer is no”. Typically in winter, there are not many homes for sale. Just look around your neighbourhood. You won’t see too many sign boards up. Many home sellers think that spring is the best time to sell so they delay putting their home on the market until September. “We still find plenty of buyers in the market in winter, but there's very little for them to choose from. This year, there’s just not enough homes to go around, with historically low stock levels across the Gold Coast. We’ve pretty much run out of land to build new homes at the north end of town, and there aren’t many new apartment projects going up either. “We’re seeing a lot of interstate migration and interest rates are still at record lows, so there’s lots of buyers out there. It’s the ‘perfect storm’ for winter sellers!” Joe said. “The Gold Coast is different to the southern states. Spring is good to sell in Melbourne because the winters are so cold. But our mild winters don’t keep the buyers away. Actually it’s quite the opposite. Victorians come up this time of year to escape the cold, and often buy property while they’re here.” So the 'hidden advantage' is this: The supply vs demand equation means that home sellers who are prepared to list their homes in winter will benefit from a lack of competition from neighbouring homes, and strong demand from both local and interstate buyers. “It’s always important to make your home stand out in the crowd,” said Joe. “Whatever the market is doing, homes that are well presented and well marketed will always sell for higher prices and in shorter time frames.” Joe always suggests to his clients to make sure that their homes are spotless and free of clutter. The front yard should have an immaculate appearance. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression!” “And it’s key to get the marketing right. You need to cast the widest net to reach the best buyers. We use a range of media including Local Newsletters, Facebook, Google, realestate.com.au, flyers, virtual tours, videos and our investor database to attract buyers near and far.” If you’re after the best results when selling your Northern Gold Coast home, call Joe Farr Platinum Properties on (07) 5500 7000 or 0422 400 680. Beloved gardening festival Botanical Bazaar is back after a COVID-curse in 2020 and 202. Rotary Club of Gold Coast is once again proud to present the Botanical Bazaar - the Gold Coast’s premier Gardening and Sustainability Festival where naturally wild, urban gardeners and nature lovers connect - making this festival a truly community driven day, with profits raised going back into the community. This event is organised and run by volunteers from Gold Coast Rotary and the community. After the gut-wrenching last-minute cancellation of the 2021 Botanical Bazaar due to an unexpected COVID-19 lockdown announcement, Botanical Bazaar 2022 is back, and tickets are on sale now! Botanical Bazaar 2022 has been locked and loaded for Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August at the stunning Country Paradise Parklands, Nerang. This years' theme is "Butterflies". The butterfly symbolizes spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope and life … a very timely theme! This year, the Butterfly Art Project was launched, and entries have been 'flying' in. These butterfly entries will be displayed around the festival grounds and ticket holders can vote for their favourite! Sponsorship is also available for business to sponsor a butterfly. This Garden & Sustainability Festival Where naturally wild, urban gardening and nature lovers of all ages connect project is raising funds for a 'PeopleMover’ for the Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens which aims to provide an inclusive mobility service for the less fit, the elderly and those with limited mobility around the GC Regional Botanic Gardens. Already locked in are over 80 exhibitors, food vendors and entertainment for the 2-day gardening and sustainable living festival. "We can't wait to have The Vegetable Plot on Saturday and the incredible Kate Leopold (& Treats) on Sunday to entertain everyone under the Musical Tree. Along with wandering buskers and artists – we also have an actionpacked itinerary for the kids in the Kid's Hub," said Nikki Murphy, Co-Creative Director. Botanical Bazaar is proudly sponsored by Cr Peter Young and 94.1FM. The Country Paradise Parklands provides such a stunning setting for the Bazaar … full of native flora and fauna … and for this reason, there are no dogs allowed (assistance dogs accepted.) Tickets are on sale now, with concession and family tickets also available. Get in quick for the Early Bird prices – and thank you gifts and prizes! For safety reasons, there are limited tickets available, and they must be pre-purchased online from www.botanicalbazaargc.com.au.
4 Research shows that 80% of older Australians prefer to age in the comfort of their own home rather than an aged care facility. We all want what is best for our ageing loved ones, and to respect their preferences, and at Home Care Assistance Gold Coast we exist to help make this preference a reality. The idea of havingCareWorkers in the home for some people might impact their feelings of independence, making it more challenging as they are resistant to the idea. At Home Care Assistance Gold Coast, we understand this challenge, and can provide you with strategies to address the underlying concerns or fears and therefore help make the transition to receiving support easier for everyone. When is the right time for home care? It is not often easy to determine exactly when your loved one requires additional support to livewell at home. There are times when it can be more apparent, for example following an accident or injury, or on return home from hospital, but at other times the indicators may not be as obvious. Things like changes in eating habits, signs of memory loss, changes to energy levels or difficulty taking part in day-to-day activities can all be signs that extra assistance could be of value. Home care funding options Care for your loved ones in the home can simply be paid for outright, but there are also full or partial funding options accessible through the government such as Home Care Packages, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Carer Gateway respite. We can support you in your exploration of these options. Paying Privately The simplest method, and a good option when urgent care is required, is simply to pay privately in full. This timely option is also great when the care need is short term, or you simply wish to keep things simple and straight forward, without involving applications and processes for seeking funding support. Should this be your preference, we offer competitive hourly rates for home Respecting our ageing loved ones care services. Home Care Packages Home Care Packages are government funded subsidies for individualised home care services. As they are personalised to everyone, they can cover everything from gardening and cooking support to more complex services requiring a co-ordinated approach such as personal care or wound care. For those on an aged pension, these packages can be fully subsidised, so there is no out of pocket cost. Let us help you Home Care Assistance Gold Coast can help. See advert page 5 > Whether you’re in Hobart, Alice Springs, Cooktown, Port Augusta, or in Wellington New Zealand, you’ll find a botanic garden. Together the over 140 botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand work collaboratively towards the same objectives of plants and people, focusing on science and conservation. Collectively they bring the important messages through interpretation, education, and events to their communities and visitors. This year the theme for National Botanic Gardens Day is ‘Passion for Plants’. Most botanic gardens will have an event on the day – in some botanic gardens it will be a large event, others something smaller, but in keeping with the theme. Together with Friends, the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens will help visitors discover what makes a botanic garden different from a park. Starting at 10 am there will be displays, guest speakers, and introductory guided walks. The speaker line-up will include well know identities who will introduce some important concepts on conservation and how the community can help preserve our wonderful flora. The Botanic Gardens has an Endangered Plant Trail, with regional species they are helping rescue from near extinction by growing in-situ, or propagating for either reintroduction to the wild or for planting in areas where they can remain safe, including local backyards. A guide will walk with visitors to get a glimpse of some of these important trees, including our Ormeau Bottle Tree, pictured right, being valued by a young tree hugger! The ‘Passion for Plants’ theme will also include wildlife with a local expert explaining the perfect partnership that exists between plants and birds. Since its establishment, the Botanic Gardens has become a refuge for many species of birds. It’s a chance to find out why a Herbarium isn’t a place that grows herbs, and to catch propagating tips from our volunteer nursery group. Our native bee expert will be on hand to discuss these small, stingless creatures, and show one of the native hives which are spotted around the Botanic Gardens. The nursery will be open, selling our region’s native plants from mostly tube stock and providing friendly advice on suitable plants. The volunteer florists in Flowers by Friends will demonstrate the use of Australian flora in cut flower displays, and there will be nature-based activities for children – perhaps kids might take the opportunity on Sunday, May 29 to plant for the future at the Botanic Garden. There’s lots more happening on National Botanic Gardens Day. Starting at 10 am and finishing at 2pm it is a perfect time to bring a picnic, buy refreshments at the Coffee Kiosk, or from the sausage sizzle and enjoy the mild May weather in our Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens. 6 CITY NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Taking extra care of our wildlife We all have a role to play in the preservation of our magnificent fauna. Latest City data reveals the extent of wildlife-vehicle collisions on our roads. The report identified a high density of collision hotspots between koalas and vehicles concentrated along several key roads within Currumbin Waters and Currumbin Valley, Elanora, Tallebudgera, and Burleigh Heads areas. Major roads within the northern suburbs also pose a risk with further hotspots in Parkwood, Arundel, Coombabah as well as Helensvale. Two key issues have been identified: driver behaviour and the need for more mitigation measures. The City currently undertakes a range of measures to reduce strikes such as fauna exclusion fencing, fauna underpasses, static wildlife signage, koala speed awareness devices, variable messaging signs as well as community education and awareness messaging. But we must do more – and we are. New mitigation measures to be explored include: Additional signage (static as well as vehicle activated); new fauna fencing; modify existing fencing; installing fauna culverts; vegetation management; vehicle calming devices such as speed humps, rumble strips and chicanes; koala grids (to restrict access to roads) and koala ladders (to enable escape from roads). More than 13,000 records of wildlife-vehicle collisions (all native species) have been reported on Gold Coast roads in the last decade and koalas make up 12.5 per cent of these records. I urge drivers to play their part and slow down at known koala hot spots, especially around dawn and dusk. TOM TATE MAYOR We’re shaping the future of the Gold Coast. The Corporate Plan supports the implementation of the City Vision, Inspired by lifestyle. Driven by opportunity. It outlines what we want to achieve for the community over the next five years. 7 HOTA and City of Gold Coast are searching for 200 rockstars to take to the stage this July Grab your guitars, Gold Coast – registrations are now open to perform as part of Those Who Rock – an epic concert featuring Aussie music icons on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage this July 3, presented by HOTA, Home of the Arts and City of Gold Coast. A participatory arts and community-focused event led by internationally acclaimed artist, Joseph O’Farrell (JOF), Those Who Rock will bring together people of all ages and abilities, offering the opportunity to rock out on the big stage for the ultimate celebration of all things rock and roll. With the callout officially now open, community members are invited to grab a guitar and register, to join in the free community workshops from May to June across the Gold Coast. Everyday rockstars and guitarists of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds, are invited to join JOF and his team to rehearse a set list of iconic rock anthems at the free workshops to be held in community centres across six areas of the Gold Coast - Tugun, Robina, Carrara, Runaway Bay, Helensvale and Pimpama. The culmination will be a huge concert under the stars, featuring hundreds of our local guitarists and some of Australia’s rock music legends on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage, hosted by Australian television personality and radio presenter, Myf Warhurst. Rockers will perform on stage with some bona fide Aussie icons, including Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus) and Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets). Each guitarist group will have their moment in the spotlight, banding together to perform a song learnt throughout the workshop process. Rock jams include ‘You’re the Voice’ by John Farnham, ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ by The Angels, ‘Enter Sandman’ by Metallica, ‘Horses’ by Daryl Braithwaite, ‘I Love Rock’n’Roll’ by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, and ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen. In an epic finale, all groups will take to the stage and join forces to perform ACDC’s classic rock anthem, ‘For Those About to Rock’. HOTA CEO, Criena Gehrke said: “Since 2018, the HOTA Outdoor Stage has hosted some incredible artists. From Ocean Alley, L.A.B., to Ministry of Sound, and our very own Amy Shark, projects like Those Who Rock will bring out the next generation of rock stars.” “What better way to celebrate the return of live music after some undeniably difficult years for the industry – rocking out as only Gold Coasters can,” she said. Those Who Rock Creator, JOF, said this is a one-of-a-kind event that’s only been seen once before when the concept premiered in Melbourne in 2019. “Get your guitars ready Gold Coasters, I am so excited for everyone to experience this rocking good time and intergenerational event that is going to rock the community. We encourage everyone to get involved. It really doesn’t matter if you’re a complete newbie to guitar or an experienced player, our team will be there to guide the group towards an amazing show.” “Those Who Rock is about the community, being part of a once-in-a-lifetime experience and promoting diversity, while celebrating and giving live music some glory following the pandemic,” added JOF. Participants of all ages will need to bring their own guitars and attend a minimum of two workshops, plus a rehearsal and the main concert. Workshops kick off on Saturday, May 28 until Sunday, June 26 and will be held at Tugun Community Centre, Robina Community Centre, Carrara Community Centre, Runaway Bay Youth Centre, Helensvale Cultural Centre and Pimpama Community Centre. He put up a sign that said “Dr. Geezer’s clinic: Get your treatment for $500, if not cured, get back $1000.” Dr. Young, who was positive that this old geezer didn’t know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to win $1000. He went to Dr. Geezer’s clinic and says, “Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me?” Dr. Geezer calls out, “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young’s mouth.” Dr. Young yells, “Aaagh! This is gasoline!” Dr. Geezer replies, “Congratulations! You’ve got your taste back, that will be $500.” Dr. Young gets annoyed and returns a couple days later with another plan to recover his money. He enters the clinic and says, “I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything.” Dr. Geezer calls out, “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young’s mouth.” Dr. Young yells, “Oh no you don’t, that’s gasoline!” Dr. Geezer replies, “Congratulations, you’ve got your memory back, that will be $500.” Dr. Young, angry after losing $1000, comes back after several more days. He enters the clinic and says, “My eyesight has become weak, I cannot see anything!” Dr. Geezer replies, “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that, so here’s your $1000 back,” and hands Dr. Young a $10 bill. Dr. Young quickly yells, “Hey, this is only $10!” Dr. Geezer replies, “Congratulations, you’ve got your vision back, that will be $500.” y k c t j s i s o WordWheel 28 The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. If you've ever thought about raising funds and awareness for bowel cancer, then Red Apple Day is the time to do it! Host an apple themed virtual brunch, morning or afternoon tea, dinner or evening catch-up. Create your Red Apple Day online fundraising page as an individual or a team now. Apple logo and charity colours Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo is symbolic of the charity's bowel cancer message: bowel cancer is treatable and beatable if detected early. The outline of Bowel Cancer Australia's apple logo appears as an abstract of a human bowel. The small hole in the apple is caused by a worm. If detected early and removed, the worm is unable to continue affecting the apple or the health of the tree. It's the same with people. If bowel cancer is detected early it can be successfully treated, which means patients and their families can continue to enjoy a healthy life. They are smart, professional women living in the same sunny, prosperous neighbourhood in lovely houses with picket fences and beautiful gardens. And they were both married to successful, goodlooking men who both seem bent on having ‘the perfect wife’. They don’t - ever - find themselves in the same train carriage or meet accidentally at the gym or in the coffee shop. And they don’t - ever - discuss their problems and find common ground. But they do cross paths. And they see something each recognizes in the other. That they are living in hell. Neither narrator is unreliable. They always tell us the truth. And their truth hurts. A lot. Because these two attractive, intelligent professional women are living in a hell of their husband’s making. And there is no way to get out of hell. Is there? ISBN: 9781529068825 | Format: Trade Paperback | Pub Date: 31/05/2022 Imprint: Macmillan | Pages: 416 | Price: $32.99 THE GREATEST ESCAPE by Neil Churches The gripping, vividly told story of the largest POW escape in the Second World War - organized by an Australian bank clerk, a British jazz pianist and an American spy. In August 1944 the most successful POW escape of the Second World War took place - 106 Allied prisoners were freed from a camp in Maribor, in present-day Slovenia. The escape was organized not by officers, but by two ordinary soldiers: Australian Ralph Churches (a bank clerk before the war) and Londoner Les Laws (a jazz pianist by profession), with the help of intelligence officer Franklin Lindsay. The American was on a mission to work with the partisans who moved like ghosts through the Alps, ambushing and evading Nazi forces. How these three men came together - along with the partisans - to plan and execute the escape is told here for the first time. The Greatest Escape, written by Ralph Churches’ son Neil, takes us from Ralph and Les’s capture in Greece in 1941 and their brutal journey to Maribor, with many POWs dying along the way, to the horror of seeing Russian prisoners starved to death in the camp. The book uncovers the hidden story of Allied intelligence operations in Slovenia, and shows how Ralph became involved. We follow the escapees on a nail-biting 160-mile journey across the Alps, pursued by German soldiers, ambushed and betrayed. And yet, of the 106 men who escaped, 100 made it to safety. Thanks to research across seven countries, The Greatest Escape is no longer a secret.
