KEEPING YOU AHEAD OF THE GAME: Why Australians Put Off Making A Will Christmas may be over, but it’s never too late to give your loved ones the ultimate gift: peace of mind. Many Australians delay making a will, often believing they are “too young” or “don’t have enough assets.” However, even modest estates can be complex due to superannuation, digital accounts, and family provision claims. Without a will, your loved ones may face unnecessary complications. Emotional discomfort is another common barrier. Modern family dynamics—such as separations, blended families, and caregiving arrangements—can make decisions feel overwhelming. People often avoid these conversations to prevent conflict, but this can lead to greater issues later. Additionally, the strict legal requirements for executing a will can be intimidating. While courts can validate informal wills in some cases, this process is uncertain and costly. At Aylward Game Solicitors, we make will-making simple and stress-free. Our experienced team will guide you through the process, ensuring your will is valid, clear, and tailored to your needs. This year, give your family the gift of security. Contact us today to create or update your will. 3 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In our fast-paced lives, filled with digital screens and constant visual stimuli, it’s easy to overlook the significance of maintaining good eye health. However, regular checkups with an optometrist are not just a precautionary measure; they are essential for preserving the precious gift of sight and overall well-being. One of the primary reasons to prioritise optometric check-ups is the early detection of potential issues. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often develop gradually without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. An optometrist can detect these conditions through comprehensive eye exams, allowing for early intervention and effective management. Timely diagnosis can prevent irreversible damage to the eyes and, in some cases, even save one’s vision. Moreover, optometrists are equipped with the expertise to address refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While it might be tempting to rely on over-the-counter reading glasses or online prescriptions, these solutions may not adequately address the unique visual needs of each individual. Optometrists tailor prescriptions based on a thorough understanding of the patient’s eye health, ensuring optimal vision correction. Regular eye check-ups are particularly crucial for children, as undetected vision problems can hinder their learning and development. Children may not always express vision concerns or even recognise them, making routine optometric visits essential for identifying and addressing potential issues early on. Good vision is integral to a child’s academic success and overall well-being. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. 5 When life gets busy, it’s easy to let important health checks slip down the todo list. Between work, family, and everyday demands, that simple reminder to book a breast screen can often fall by the wayside. But here’s a friendly nudge — don’t wait. This small act of self-care could make a big difference. Peace of mind For most women, breast screening brings reassurance and peace of mind with most breast screens delivering a normal result with no breast cancer found. Many women say that receiving a clear result allows them to get on with life, free from that nagging feeling in the back of their minds. Early detection means more options The goal of breast screening is to find cancers when they’re very small — often too small to be seen or felt. When breast cancer is found early, it’s usually easier to treat and there are often more treatment options available. Early detection not only saves lives but can also lead to a better quality of life after diagnosis. Saving lives, one screen at a time Since the introduction of the BreastScreen Australia program, deaths from breast cancer have reduced significantly. There are different benefits and risks of breast screening depending on your age, risk factors, and other considerations. Regular screening mammograms are recommended every two years for most women aged 50 to 74 as the effectiveness of breast screening is strongest for this group. Free breast screens are available at BreastScreen Queensland services for eligible people aged 40 and over who haven’t noticed any breast changes. If you’re a woman aged 40 to 49 or 75 and over, with no family history or previous diagnosis of breast cancer, speak with your doctor to help decide if breast screening is right for you. Support is available The BreastScreen Queensland team are here to support you every step of the way. Videos and facts sheets in various languages can be found online to help you prepare for your visit, including information for individuals with disability and those who use a wheelchair or mobility aid. Interpreters and small group bookings can be arranged. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients visiting BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast services, a Sistas Shawl (which can be worn or held during the screen) is offered alongside culturally supportive information. Convenient, quick and free Appointments are simple to book and available at convenient locations across Queensland. Permanent clinics are at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale, Robina and Southport. A mobile clinic visits other areas through the year including Nerang (February) and Elanora (March to April). Early morning and Saturday clinics are offered to help fit around your schedule. Book by phoning 13 20 50 or online at breastscreen.qld.gov.au Because peace of mind, early detection and better outcomes are all reasons to make booking a breast screen a priority. Regular screening could save your life
6 As Glaucoma Awareness Week (8–14 March) approaches, Vision Michael Hare Optometrists would like to shine a light on an important and often misunderstood eye condition. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss, yet it often develops without obvious symptoms. Many people are living with glaucoma without realising it, and early detection plays a vital role in protecting long-term sight. Often described as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information from the eye to the brain. In its early stages, there is usually no pain and no noticeable change to vision. Peripheral vision is typically affected first, meaning central vision can remain clear while damage quietly progresses in the background. “At Vision Michael Hare Optometrists, we regularly see patients who are surprised to learn they have early signs of glaucoma,” explains optometrist Michael Hare. “They feel their vision is fine, and that’s exactly why regular, thorough eye examinations are so important.” While increased eye pressure is a common risk factor, glaucoma can also occur in people with normal eye pressure. Family history, age, diabetes, and long-term steroid use can all increase risk, but glaucoma can affect anyone. Because vision loss caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, early detection is key. “Many people are surprised by how detailed glaucoma testing actually is,” explains optometrist Jonathan McCorriston. “We assess eye pressure, examine the optic nerve, analyse retinal nerve fibres, and measure peripheral vision. Together, these tests and others give us a much clearer picture of eye health and allow us to identify early changes long before vision is affected.” Advances in diagnostic technology now allow optometrists to identify glaucoma earlier than ever before, often before any vision is lost. With early diagnosis, treatment can begin promptly to slow or prevent further damage and help preserve long-term sight. Glaucoma Awareness Week is an important reminder that eye health should never be taken for granted. Even if your vision feels unchanged, regular eye examinations play a vital role in protecting your sight. If it has been more than two years since your last comprehensive eye test, or if you have known risk factors - especially a family history of glaucoma, now is the time to take action. Looking after your eyes today can make a lasting difference for your vision tomorrow. 9 The Power of Curb Appeal: Enhancing Your Home's Exterior to Boost its Market Value In the world of real estate, first impressions matter. Potential buyers often form opinions about a property within seconds of arriving, and the exterior appearance of a home plays a crucial role in shaping these initial perceptions. Joe Farr, your local 4216 agent from Farr Real Estate knows all about the art of enhancing a home's exterior to make it more attractive to potential buyers and, ultimately, boost its market value. Curb appeal encompasses a wide range of elements, from the condition of the landscaping to the appearance of the front door. Experts agree that investing time and resources into improving curb appeal can pay off handsomely when it comes time to sell a property. “One of the most fundamental aspects of curb appeal is landscaping. A well-maintained lawn, neatly trimmed hedges, and colourful flower beds can instantly elevate the appearance of a home's exterior”, says Joe. “Homeowners should ensure that their landscaping is tidy and well-groomed, as unkempt greenery can give the impression of neglect.” In addition to landscaping, attention should be paid to the condition of the home's exterior surfaces. Investing in a fresh coat of paint, a pressure wash, or making necessary repairs can go a long way toward improving the exterior appearance of a home and increasing its market value. Joe points out that the front entryway is another focal point of curb appeal. An inviting entrance can create a positive first impression and set the tone for the rest of the home. Simple enhancements such as updating the front door, adding decorative lighting fixtures, and a nice “welcome” mat can make a significant difference in the overall aesthetic appeal of a property. In today's digital age, curb appeal extends beyond physical appearances to include online presentation as well. With the majority of homebuyers beginning their search for properties online, it's essential for sellers to showcase their home's exterior in its best light through high-quality photographs and virtual tours. Professional photography and a stunning front yard can capture the attention of potential buyers and generate more interest in the property. Simple improvements such as adding fresh mulch to flower beds, updating outdoor lighting fixtures, or installing a new mailbox can make a big impact without breaking the bank. The power of curb appeal should not be underestimated when it comes to selling a home. By enhancing the exterior appearance of a property, homeowners can attract more buyers, command higher sale prices, and ultimately achieve greater success in the real estate market. If you’re getting ready to sell, your local expert agent Joe Farr can pop around to give you personalised advice on preparing your home for sale. You can reach Joe at Farr Real Estate on 55 007 007 or 0422 400 680. see advert front cover Congrats December Winners! $50 GIFT CARD SUDOKU 201: S. Ross, Labrador CROSSWORD 201: S.
