Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss, yet it often develops without obvious symptoms. Many people are living with glaucoma without realising it, and early detection plays a vital role in protecting long-term sight. Often described as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information from the eye to the brain. In its early stages, there is usually no pain and no noticeable change to vision. Peripheral vision is typically affected first, meaning central vision can remain clear while damage quietly progresses in the background. “At Vision Michael Hare Optometrists, we regularly see patients who are surprised to learn they have early signs of glaucoma,” explains optometrist Michael Hare. “They feel their vision is fine, and that’s exactly why regular, thorough eye examinations are so important.” While increased eye pressure is a common risk factor, glaucoma can also occur in people with normal eye pressure. Family history, age, diabetes, and long-term steroid use can all increase risk, but glaucoma can affect anyone. Because vision loss caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, early detection is key. “Many people are surprised by how detailed glaucoma testing actually is,” explains optometrist Jonathan McCorriston. “We assess eye pressure, examine the optic nerve, analyse retinal nerve fibres, and measure peripheral vision. Together, these tests and others give us a much clearer picture of eye health and allow us to identify early changes long before vision is affected.” Advances in diagnostic technology now allow optometrists to identify glaucoma earlier than ever before, often before any vision is lost. With early diagnosis, treatment can begin promptly to slow or prevent further damage and help preserve long-term sight. Glaucoma Awareness Week is an important reminder that eye health should never be taken for granted.
