2 Clients, pupils and business associates of Gullivers attended a gala celebration night to remember marking 50 years since Terry Gulliver started teaching the Gold Coast to swim. Guests walked the red carpet and for many it was a stroll down memory lane. There were families whose children were taught in the pool behind the now demolished Pacific Hotel, some from the first Gulliver Swim Academy in Benowa Road and others who trained in the half Olympic pool in Benowa. There was Judy Ward one of the first Swim teachers who proudly showed her Diploma from when she graduated the Gulliver Swim Teacher Training Course in the mid seventies. Darr Grant reminisced enthusiastically about the fun of Waterball, a game Terry invented that attracted 100 teams a week. A power point presentation highlighted the Gullivers journey and the ventures that helped it survive those early days at Coomera when there were more kangaroos than people. There was a sample menu from very popular Ladies lunches that Terry’s wife Lyn ran to help prop up the business in those early days. Displays of the numerous magazine features and newspaper articles highlighted the performances of young Gullivers pupils and their seemingly miraculous achievements. GULLIVERS 50 year Celebrations Lyn & Terry Gulliver with Lara cutting the 50 Year Celebration Cake Pic Right: State Member Theodore Mark Boothman congratulates Terry Gulliver on 50 years of Gullivers Swim Schools Pic Left: Rod Young, Channel 9 GC and Darr Grant discussing Water Ball General manager Cam McKay and some of the Gullivers team Host Lara had the assembly in stitches with hilarious anecdotes of her time with Gullivers over the past 27 years. State member for Theodore Mark Boothman attended and congratulated Terry on his wonderful contribution to the community. Former premier Rob Borbidge and Division 13 councillor Donna Gates were late no shows due to personal matters but contributed messages of support. Key members of the 45 strong staff who make Gullivers the success it is today attended and were given the accolades they well deserved. The four Gullivers Legends who have been with the company for between 11 and 27 years were honoured for their work with the more than 1000 pupils who attend swim lessons every week. Former directors of the Out of Hours School Age Care programme marvelled at the growth in the programme that now services almost 250 pupils a day . The event was not just a celebration of the past, but a testament to a thriving future. With a passionate team, loyal families and a proud history of excellence, Gullivers remains a shining example of how commitment and community spirit can make waves for generations to come.

4 Use it or Lose It! 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au Book your appointment today! If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. Paris Miki Helensvale accepts all health funds, so book your appointment and make the most of your benefits. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 24 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. 5 Why Driving Much Slower Than the Speed Limit Can Be Dangerous: What Drivers Need to Know When we think about dangerous driving, most people's first thought is speeding. It's true that excessive speed is a major contributor to crashes. But did you know that driving well below the speed limit can also be a significant risk, sometimes just as hazardous as driving too fast? The Research: What Does Science Really Say? The popular idea that "driving 10 mph slower than the traffic flow makes you six times more likely to cause an accident" comes from a famous traffic study in the U.S. by David Solomon in the 1950s and 1960s. Solomon's research tracked tens of thousands of crashes and found something unexpected: drivers most likely to crash were those driving much slower or much faster than everyone else. His results formed what is now called the Solomon Curve: crash risk is lowest for cars moving at about the same speed as other traffic, but increases sharply for those driving much slower or much faster. While the exact numbers vary by study and road conditions, the key takeaway has held up over time. Why Is Driving Too Slowly Dangerous? Creates Speed Differentials: When a vehicle travels much slower than other cars, faster drivers must brake, change lanes, or take sudden action to avoid a collision. This disrupts the flow and causes surprises - prime conditions for crashes. Encourages Risky Passing: Slow drivers often force others to change lanes or overtake, especially on highways, leading to dangerous manoeuvres. Visibility and Expectations: Other drivers expect traffic to be moving at a typical speed. When someone is going much slower, it gives less time to react, especially if visibility is poor. What About The “Six Times More Likely” Claim? While that specific number is often mentioned in media and online posts, it's a rough average from older U.S. data. The crucial point remains: driving at a very different speed from the flow - either fast OR slow - increases your risk. Good Driving School Advice: Keep With The Traffic Flow Safe driving is not just about following the speed limit, but also about flowing smoothly with surrounding traffic (without exceeding posted speed limits). Here are key tips: Don't Drive Too Slowly: Unless conditions require it (bad weather, congestion, emergencies), avoid driving significantly below the speed of other vehicles on the road. Avoid Disrupting Traffic: If you need to drive slowly for some reason, keep to the left or allow others to overtake safely. Stay Alert: Always adjust your speed for the road, weather, and traffic - but remember that unnecessary slow driving can create hazards. The Bottom Line Being a safe driver means more than just not speeding. It means matching your speed to the conditions - and the general flow of traffic - so that everyone can predict what's coming next. Drive smart, drive safe, and remember: major speed differences - whether fast or slow - are what put you and others at risk.
