4 City urges responsible pet ownership to prevent attacks • Mudgeeraba - 16 • Carrara - 16 • Pacific Pines - 16 • Upper Coomera – 16. In addition to attacks, there were 320 aggressive dog-related requests in 2025, including fence rushing and aggressive behaviour on and off leash. The City has launched a new campaign to highlight the consequences of irresponsible dog ownership, with most reported attacks occurring in public spaces when animals are not properly contained or under effective control. Dog attacks remain a serious community safety issue with more than 600 reported to Council in 2025, averaging 54 per month. Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel said responsible dog ownership was key to preventing these serious incidents. “Of the attacks reported to Council last year, a majority occurred outside the home or while the owner was present,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. “Let’s keep the Gold Coast a safe and enjoyable place to live by ensuring dogs are on a leash in public, safely contained at home, and under voice control and supervision in designated off leash areas. “With many dog attacks still going unreported we urge anyone who experiences an incident to report it immediately for the safety of our community.” The new campaign is aimed at preventing dog attacks and reminding residents of tougher penalties brought on by changes to State law. The campaign ‘One bite can cost your dog’s life - Leash. Contain. Supervise.’ will feature across various channels including TV, YouTube, social media and outdoor advertising. “Owners can face hefty fines and potential jail time for serious attacks, with stricter requirements for regulated dogs involved in repeat incidents,” Deputy Mayor Hammel said. Suburbs with most reported attacks in 2025: • Southport - 33 • Labrador - 30 • Surfers Paradise - 28 • Nerang - 25 • Pimpama - 24 • Palm Beach - 21 • Helensvale - 20 • Coomera - 18 “As communities across Australia and New Zealand navigate increasingly busy, screen-heavy lives, a growing body of research points to a simple, accessible solution for better health — time in nature. This May, Botanic Gardens Week returns for its 11th year with the theme “Where Your Health Grows”, inviting locals to step into their nearest botanic garden and experience the proven benefits firsthand. “ www.bganz.org.au Our Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens is valued as a safe, welcoming space. A walk along its shady paths will leave you feeling refreshed, but don’t forget to pause and look at your surroundings. See the detail, look more closely at plants, listen and notice the insects and hear the birds. Stop off at the Friends Centre and pick up a map before you select your walk. Perhaps follow the main path to the She Oak Grove – pause and listen. Step off the main path and wander along the side trails, including the Story of our Country and Bush Foods Plant Collections, which represent flora important to our First Nation Peoples. Walk among rainforest trees planted in honour of Australian Defence Force lives lost in the Afghan Conflict. Wander down to the Nerang River via more regional trees, and loop back through the Gum Tree Corridor. Based on bark types or regional ecosystems, and like so many of the Plant Collections planted by Friends and the community. Later, discover the Callitris Grove planted by local school children, together with visiting Turkish Artists to mark the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. For a shorter walk from the Friends Centre, head along the northern edge of the Feature Lake through the Friendship Force and Curators Avenue to the Closed Forest Gorge Plant Collection and Fountain. Backtrack and cross the Ring Road to the QE II Jubilee Walk. Fast becoming a favourite for its silent forest track, with some trees dating from the early development of the Gold Coast. Emerging at the heritage Rosser Orchard, walk to the bush steps back to the lake, passing the grand old Blackbutt. Even the shortest of walks in nature will leave you feeling refreshed. 5 In the realm of vision correction, your optometrist serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path to visual clarity through the selection of suitable eyeglasses. Beyond merely prescribing lenses, they play a pivotal role in aiding individuals in selecting glasses that not only correct vision but also complement their lifestyle, preferences, and unique facial features. One of the primary responsibilities of an optometrist is to conduct comprehensive eye examinations to determine the precise prescription needed for optimal vision correction. This involves assessing various factors such as refractive errors, astigmatism, and potential eye diseases. Armed with this information, the optometrist can recommend the most appropriate lens type, whether it be single vision for near or distance vision, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses for individuals with presbyopia. Choosing the right frames is equally crucial, blending functionality with style to enhance not only sight but also personal aesthetics. Optometrists are adept at guiding patients through the myriad of frame options available, considering factors like face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle preferences. Frames come in diverse styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, minimalist to bold, catering to individual tastes and preferences. Optometrists can recommend specialised lenses to meet specific visual needs. For individuals frequently exposed to digital screens, blue light filtering lenses can mitigate eye strain and discomfort. Those engaged in outdoor activities may benefit from photochromic lenses that adapt to varying light conditions, providing optimal vision in any environment. They can advise on lens coatings to enhance performance and durability. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and reflections, particularly beneficial for night driving or computer use. Scratchresistant coatings prolong the lifespan of lenses, ensuring long-term clarity and visual comfort. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 25 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Police step up to the challenge by taking part in the Emergency Services Lifeblood Drive Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers across the state are rolling up their sleeves to donate blood and plasma as part of the annual Emergency Services Lifeblood Drive (1 May to 31 July). QPS officers made an incredible 658 donations during last year’s Lifeblood Drive, earning the title of Queensland’s leading emergency service for blood donations, helping to save countless lives in the process. This year QPS officers are determined to continue the friendly rivalry with other emergency services and together, contribute to the good cause. Senior Constable Darin Carruthers has been in the QPS for 36 years and having attended many frontline emergencies, knows just how critical blood can be to save lives. He has the rare blood type of AB negative, which he shares with about one percent of Queensland’s population. “Every blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives so by participating in the drive I’m helping to keep other Queenslanders safe,’’ Senior Constable Carruthers said. First-year constable Amber Johnson, 22, was nervous about being a first-time donor but was pleased she could contribute and wants to encourage community members to give blood as a simple, but powerful way to help others. “As a QPS officer, helping people is at the core of what I do every day, so taking part in the Emergency Services Drive is another way I can help outside of my frontline duties,’’ Constable Johnson said. “Being a first-time donor has been a positive experience, and it feels rewarding knowing that such a small act can make a real difference to someone’s life, and I hope to continue to donate regularly.’’ To find out more about giving blood, visit the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood website at www.lifeblood.com.au to find your nearest donation centre.
7 What Assets Do and Do Not Form Part of a Will in Queensland A common misconception in estate planning is that a Will controls all of a person’s assets. In Queensland, this is not the case. A Will only deals with assets that form part of the deceased estate at the time of death. Many assets pass outside the Will automatically due to the way they are owned or structured. Understanding this distinction is essential to ensure an estate plan reflects a person’s true intentions. Assets That Form Part of a Will (Estate Assets) A Will generally deals with assets solely owned by the deceased that do not pass automatically to another person. These commonly include: • Real property owned in the deceased’s sole name • Bank accounts held in the deceased’s sole name • Personal possessions (jewellery, vehicles, furniture, artwork) • Shares and investments held personally • Business interests held in the individual’s name • Tax refunds, wages owing, and personal debts owed to the deceased These assets are distributed according to the terms of the Will (or under intestacy if no valid Will exists). Assets That Do NOT Form Part of a Will Some assets pass outside the estate and are not controlled by the Will: Jointly owned assets - Assets held as joint tenants automatically pass to the surviving owner by right of survivorship, including jointly owned property and joint bank accounts. Superannuation - Superannuation is generally not an estate asset. It is distributed according to a binding death benefit nomination or the trustee’s discretion. Life insurance - Life insurance proceeds usually pass directly to the nominated beneficiary and do not form part of the estate. Trust assets - Assets held in a trust are owned by the trustee, not the individual personally, and are not distributed under a Will. Company assets - Assets owned by a company are not personal assets. Only shares in the company form part of the estate. Nominated beneficiary assets - Some financial products pass by nomination and override the Will. Key Point A Will only controls assets that are legally part of the deceased estate. Assets held jointly, in superannuation, in trusts, or with nominated beneficiaries may pass outside the Will entirely. For this reason, effective estate planning requires more than just a Will, it also requires careful consideration of ownership structures and beneficiary nominations. Contact Us If you would like advice about your Will, estate planning, or understanding how your assets will be distributed, please contact our office on (07) 5610 8060 to arrange a consultation.
