See advert back page After a separation it can often be difficult for parents to work together to reach a parenting arrangement that is in the best interests of the children. There are many methods that can be employed to assist parents in reaching an agreement without a need to resort to initiating Court proceedings. One of the best ways that parents can try to reach an agreement is through mediation. In a mediation the parties are assisted by an independent, unbiased third party to try to reach an agreement that works best for the children. Depending on the age of the children it may also be beneficial to participate in a child inclusive mediation. In a child inclusive mediation, the children are included in the decision-making process by meeting with the mediator or suitably qualified consultant to give voice to their thoughts, feelings and wishes. Alternatively, the parties may wish to have a formal Family Report prepared prior to a mediation. A Family Report is prepared by a suitably qualified professional whom is usually a social worker or psychologist. The Report considers both the parents views and wishes and those of the children and then makes recommendations as to what parenting arrangements may be in the best interests of the children. In Court proceedings the Court will usually require the parties to undertake a Family Report prior to making any decisions and that Report is almost always given significant weight by the Judge when making the decision. The benefit of commissioning a Family Report prior to Court is that it could assist the parties in avoiding expensive Court costs and if the matter does resort to Court the Report can then be provided to the Court without the need for a further delay. At Hilton Hartley Lawyers we can help parties arrange a mediation, whether it is child inclusive or not, and can assist parties in arranging for a Family Report. We can guide parties in reaching a child appropriate agreement that suits each client’s particular needs. If an agreement is reached, we can then assist parties in preparing Consent Orders to formalise the agreement. To discuss our fixed fee rates call Hilton Hartley Lawyers on 5610 8060 to schedule a meeting with one of our experienced solicitors today. 4 The Importance of Maintaining Your Property's Paintwork: Why Professional Painters Make the Difference Your property's paintwork serves as more than just aesthetic appeal—it's a critical protective barrier that shields your investment from the elements. Regular paint maintenance isn't just about keeping up appearances; it's about preserving your property's value, structural integrity, and long-term durability. The Hidden Costs of Neglected Paintwork When paint begins to crack, peel, or fade, it exposes underlying surfaces to moisture, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. This exposure can lead to wood rot, metal corrosion, and structural damage that costs thousands more to repair than preventive painting would have cost. Water infiltration through compromised paint can cause mold growth, foundation issues, and interior damage that extends far beyond surface-level problems. A well-maintained paint job can last 7-10 years on exterior surfaces and even longer indoors, while neglected surfaces may require complete restoration within just a few years. The Professional Advantage While DIY painting might seem like a cost-effective solution, professional painters bring expertise that delivers superior results and long-term value. Professional painters understand surface preparation, which accounts for 70% of a paint job's success. They know how to properly clean, sand, prime, and repair surfaces before applying paint, ensuring optimal adhesion and longevity. Professionals also have access to commercial-grade materials and equipment that aren't readily available to consumers. They understand which paint formulations work best for different surfaces, climates, and exposure conditions. Their spray equipment and techniques create more even coverage than typical roller applications, while their experience helps them identify and address potential problems before they become costly issues. Making the Smart Investment Maintaining your property's paintwork isn't an expense— it's an investment in your property's future. Professional painting services ensure this investment delivers maximum returns through superior preparation, quality materials, expert application, and lasting results. When you consider the true costs of materials, tools, time, and potential mistakes, professional painting often provides better value than DIY alternatives while delivering results that protect and enhance your property for years to come. 6 Australian residents aged between 45-74 are invited to screen for bowel cancer through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. The bowel screening tests are completed at home in private and returned in the mail. Why is it important to do the test? Bowel Cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, and the second highest cause of cancer death. Around 400 Gold Coast residents are diagnosed each year. Bowel cancers found through routine screening are usually less advanced than those diagnosed at a later stage, often after symptoms appear. Most bowel cancers are treatable if detected early. How does the test work? The bowel screening test looks for tiny amounts of blood in a person’s poo, which may be a sign of changes in the bowel. If blood is found in either of the test samples, the next step is usually a diagnostic test, such as a colonoscopy, to check the bowel for any abnormalities. Most people who have blood detected in their samples will not have bowel cancer, but many will have small growths in their bowel called polyps. If polyps are found during a colonoscopy they are usually removed, which prevents them from potentially turning into a cancer at a later stage. Are the tests suitable for everyone? Bowel screening tests are intended for healthy people who have no obvious bowel symptoms (such as bleeding from the bowel, persistent changes in toilet habits, unexplained tiredness or weight loss and abdominal pain). Anyone with bowel symptoms should discuss them with their doctor as soon as possible and not wait for a screening test. How do I get a bowel screening test? The free test kits are automatically sent in the mail to eligible people aged 50-74, and people aged 45-49 can join the program by requesting their first test kit. It’s important to keep your postal address up to date with Medicare or DVA, as this is where the kits will be mailed to. If your test kit has expired, was thrown away, is damaged or never arrived, a free replacement test can be requested online at ncsr.gov.au/boweltest or by phoning 1800 627 701. Have you done your free bowel test?
