6 Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch Welcome to your September Newsletter. I am shocked it is September already, the way these years are rolling around is quite scary to be honest, but here we are. I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well and protected against the cold weather we have been having. As you know I work in Fraud and Scams and I am passionate about raising awareness for you, so you know what to look out for. Currently one of the most common scams occurring is: You will receive an unknown deposit into your bank account, it will have a reference similar to Wedding, Catering, Hair etc. It won’t be intended for you, so what do you do? You will get a call in a few days from someone frantically tell you they transfer the money to the wrong account, and I need you to desperately forward it to the correct person. The urgency and the story, most people fall for. A few things to consider, how did they get your bank details with your name on it, how did they know how to contact you? If you receive this type of money into your account, please move all money bar around $50 out of that account into another one of your accounts. DO NOT fall for transferring the money to anyone, let their bank do the recall, it is not on you to forward this on. What happens is, you forward the money thinking you have done the right thing and at the same time, they are having the funds recalled from your account. So basically, you have paid the scammers that sum of money and lost what they deposited into your account! But if you move the money bar around $50 they can’t get it recalled. So how do they get your details, from data breaches and they purchase your details from the dark web. Please be vigilant and DO NOT respond to them. Do not forward money on and move your money to another account for the time being. If you need to pay bills do that but know if you move the money back to that account it can be frozen whilst the other bank is doing a recall. Final Thoughts With cost of living and everything else causing havoc on people’s lives at present, the last thing you want to be is a victim of a scam. The scammers won’t stop, so I will continue to bring you information around this subject, as Gold Coast is a target due to what they call ‘old money’ or retirement money. They prey on the older generation as they aren’t always as tech savvy and they are very trusting. Please don’t be, this is one time you need to call their bluff, hang up on them, tell them to work it out with their bank, you’re not talking to them anymore and don’t. Block their number. I am obviously at the Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch meetings, so if you want to talk to me, please feel free to attend one of these. Our next meeting on Tuesday 11 November 2025 at 7pm. Please arrive early as we start on time. We also have cash ticket raffles on the night which are always great to take part in.
