This important legislation, named in memory of Daniel Morcombe, establishes the Queensland Community Protection and Public Child Sex Offender Register, enabling parents to be informed and to protect their children from potentially dangerous offenders. For over 20 years, Bruce and Denise Morcombe have transformed their profound loss into a passionate advocacy for child safety. Daniel’s Law represents a significant advancement in honouring their commitment to safeguarding children in Queensland. The law is modelled after the successful system implemented in Western Australia since 2012 and introduces a three-tier disclosure framework: • Tier 1: A public website that lists reportable offenders who have violated their obligations and whose locations are unknown to law enforcement. • Tier 2: An online application that allows residents to view photographs of reportable offenders residing in their local area. • Tier 3: An application process for parents and guardians to verify whether individuals with unsupervised contact with their child are reportable offenders. To ensure responsible use of this information, three new offences have been established, carrying penalties of up to 10 years’ imprisonment for any misuse or acts of vigilantism. The Crisafulli Government has launched Queensland’s inaugural public child sex offender register, marking a pivotal achievement in community safety and providing a vital resource for parents and guardians. Daniel’s Law empowers Queensland families in ways they have not experienced before, giving them: • The power to know. • The power to act. By providing parents with access to essential information, Daniel’s Law reinforces our collective commitment to ensuring the safety of children throughout Queensland.
