Here are four easy tips to help you get the most out of tax time: 1. Keep Track of Your Receipts It might seem simple, but many Australians misplace valuable receipts each year, losing out on potential deductions. Every time you make a work-related purchase, hold onto the receipt—whether that’s by snapping a photo and saving it to a folder on your phone or storing paper receipts in an envelope in your car. Come tax time, you’ll have everything you need in one place. 2. Log Work-Related Car Travel If you use your vehicle for work purposes (excluding your commute), you could be eligible for a deduction. Maintain a logbook for 12 consecutive weeks, recording all work-related trips. You only need to do this once every five years, as long as your work situation stays the same. Be sure to save a copy of your logbook in case the ATO requests evidence later on. 3. Don’t Ignore Small Expenses Even low-cost items like a $10 notebook or a $20 subscription can add up over the year. Get into the habit of immediately photographing and storing every receipt in a dedicated folder on your device. These small claims can make a noticeable difference to your refund. 4. Consult a Tax Professional A registered tax agent can review your return, spot additional deductions, and help you avoid costly mistakes. They can also represent you if issues arise with the ATO and may offer deadline extensions that aren’t available to individuals lodging directly. Plus, their fee is tax-deductible on your next return—a smart investment. City seeks to recognise disaster recovery heroes The search is on for the community heroes who stepped up to help others after severe weather events struck the Gold Coast. Mayor Tom Tate said the Disaster Recovery Hero Award was created to recognise community members who helped others recover from the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 severe weather events and Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025. “Gold Coasters have shown their strength in how they have come together and helped each other out following both these severe weather events,” Mayor Tate said. “The support shown and the powerful ways people helped each other is one of the reasons I’m incredibly proud to be a Gold Coaster. “Recovery is about more than just the initial clean-up – it is also about ensuring environment, economy, infrastructure and the community’s health and social wellbeing are built back better and made stronger. “We are stronger together and that has helped us through the recovery process. “This award celebrates those everyday people who gave their all to help the community recover and shown the unwavering spirit of the Gold Coast.” Gold Coasters are being urged to nominate a Gold Coast local community member or group who showed outstanding dedication and community spirit following these severe weather events. Residents are urged to show how “we are stronger together” by telling the story of their disaster recovery hero and nominating them for the award. The award is open to community groups and individuals who are residents of the Gold Coast. Nominations close on 8 July 2025. To nominate your disaster recovery hero head to goldcoast.qld.gov.au/recoveryheroaward.

Beyond merely prescribing lenses, they play a pivotal role in aiding individuals in selecting glasses that not only correct vision but also complement their lifestyle, preferences, and unique facial features. One of the primary responsibilities of an optometrist is to conduct comprehensive eye examinations to determine the precise prescription needed for optimal vision correction. This involves assessing various factors such as refractive errors, astigmatism, and potential eye diseases. Armed with this information, the optometrist can recommend the most appropriate lens type, whether it be single vision for near or distance vision, bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses for individuals with presbyopia. Choosing the right frames is equally crucial, blending functionality with style to enhance not only sight but also personal aesthetics. Optometrists are adept at guiding patients through the myriad of frame options available, considering factors like face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle preferences. Frames come in diverse styles, ranging from classic to contemporary, minimalist to bold, catering to individual tastes and preferences. Optometrists can recommend specialised lenses to meet specific visual needs. For individuals frequently exposed to digital screens, blue light filtering lenses can mitigate eye strain and discomfort. Those engaged in outdoor activities may benefit from photochromic lenses that adapt to varying light conditions, providing optimal vision in any environment. They can advise on lens coatings to enhance performance and durability. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare and reflections, particularly beneficial for night driving or computer use. Scratchresistant coatings prolong the lifespan of lenses, ensuring long-term clarity and visual comfort. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 31 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 24 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. 6 Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch Welcome to your June Newsletter. Wow we are hitting the half-year mark already, how did that happen! This month, I am highlighting safety tips for our seniors. As a senior, it’s important that you can enjoy your home, community and lifestyle in comfort and security, it is essential to your health and wellbeing. The Queensland Police have provided the following tips: • If you use an answering machine, ensure you leave a message saying ‘we’ will call back if you live alone. • If you and your family communicate on the internet via social media networks, make sure you don’t give out personal details such as your home address or phone number. • Be cautious about information you give to strangers – don’t tell them where you live or when you will be away and don’t give out any personal, family or financial information. • When shopping, avoid carrying large amounts of money and never leave your handbag, wallet or personal items unattended or in a shopping trolley or mobility device. • If you’re travelling on public transport, ensure you sit where you can see and be seen by the driver or guard, and always check timetables beforehand to avoid long waits. • In your phone, program in the contact numbers of a relative, neighbour or close friend you can contact if you need assistance. Also program the emergency number 000. • If you receive mail, emails or phone calls requesting money, even if it’s for charity, verify where the request has come from before donating. If you are unsure, contact your local police station. • When out and about, always appear confident and self-assured. Research shows that people who appear confident and take personal safety precautions are less likely to become victims of crime. • Consider installing an alarm system in your home, particularly if you live alone, to help protect your home and personal safety. • Medical or personal alarm systems are also a good idea to consider and are easy to set up. First impressions are everything, especially when it comes to selling your home. In today's competitive real estate market, capturing the attention of potential buyers requires more than just a well-worded listing. It's about presenting your property in its best light, and that starts with stunning photographs that showcase its full potential. Joe Farr, a seasoned real estate agent with over two decades of experience at Farr Real Estate selling Gold Coast homes, shares invaluable insights on how to get your property ready for a photo shoot that will leave buyers eager to see more. Prepping Your Property for a Picture-Perfect Sale "Photographs are often the first point of contact between a buyer and your property," says Joe Farr. "They set the tone for the entire viewing experience, so it's crucial to make sure your home looks its absolute best." One of the first steps in preparing for a photo shoot is decluttering and depersonalising your space. Remove any personal items such as family photos and knick-knacks, as they can distract potential buyers from envisioning themselves in the home. "You want to create a blank canvas that allows buyers to imagine their own life in the space," advises Joe. Next, focus on cleaning and organising each room. Pay special attention to high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and bathrooms, ensuring that countertops are clear, surfaces architectural details, natural light, and views. "You want to create a sense of flow that allows potential buyers to envision themselves living in the space," explains Joe. "Avoid overcrowding rooms with furniture and decor, as this can make them appear smaller and less inviting." Finally, don't forget about street appeal. The exterior of your home is the first thing buyers will see, so it's important to make a good impression from the moment they arrive. "Investing in landscaping, painting the front door, and ensuring that the exterior is well-maintained can go a long way in attracting buyers," advises Farr. By following these expert tips from Joe Farr, you can ensure that your property is photo-ready and poised to make a great first impression on potential buyers. With a little preparation and attention to detail, you can set the stage for a successful sale that exceeds your expectations. "A clean, tidy home not only looks more appealing in photographs but also gives the impression that it has been well-maintained," In addition to cleaning, consider making small cosmetic updates to enhance the overall appearance of your property. This could include freshening up paint, replacing outdated curtains, or adding strategic touches of staging to highlight the home's best features. "Simple changes can have a big impact on how your home is perceived by buyers," says Joe. "It's about creating a sense of warmth and welcoming that invites people in." Years ago, Nora Bridge walked out on her marriage and left her daughters behind. She has since become a famous radio talk-show host and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice. Her youngest daughter, Ruby, is a struggling comedienne who uses her famous mother as fuel for her bitter, cynical humour. When the tabloids unearth a scandalous secret from Nora’s past, their estrangement suddenly becomes dramatic. Nora is injured in an accident and a glossy magazine offers Ruby a fortune to write a tell-all about her mother. Under false pretences, Ruby returns home to take care of the woman she hasn’t spoken to for almost a decade. Nora insists they retreat to Summer Island, to the lovely old house on the water where Ruby grew up, a place filled with childhood memories of love and joy and belonging. There Ruby is also reunited with her first love and his brother. Once, the three of them had been best friends, inseparable.
