4 Gold Coasters and visitors to the city will be able to view Botanical Art at the Royal Queensland Art Society of Queensland Gallery, 25 Broadbeach Blvd, Broadbeach from the 5th July to 31st July. The exhibition is jointly presented by The Botanical Art Society of Australia (BASA), Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens (FGCRBG) and Native Plants Queensland (NPQ). Showcasing 71 paintings and some graphite pencil works from botanical artists across Australia, the works include three categories – Eucalypts, Native Plants and Non-Native Plants and will be judged on 4th July. Everyone is welcome – entry is free. It is also an opportunity to purchase the works exhibited Some of the works on show may include all relevant parts of the plants, providing a scientific record that enables detailed identification. Others may represent parts of a plant, a flower, foliage or perhaps a fruit, but must also be botanically correct. The work can be painstaking, as in this Giant Spear Lily Doryanthes palmeri by Mali Moir in 2005, from a specimen growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Bauer made field sketches and completed the works on his return to England as Illustrations published as Florae Novae Hollandiae, London, 2013. Joseph H Maiden was the Director of RBG Sydney from 1896 – 1924 and pictured left is his detailed line drawing of Eucalyptus erythrocorys Red Capped Gum from his 8 volume A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus (1903-1933). To coincide with the exhibition FGCRBG are running a series of Glider Tours and Guided Walks, as well as several tours by Native Plants Queensland and various workshops.
