The award generates an exhibition of finalist work that numbers over 500 artworks. Artists compete for the $33,000 prize pool, with a $20,000 acquisitive cash prize for the winning landscape entry. “We have had entries from every state in Australia” says Sam Sinner, Event Director. “It’s testament to the reputation of The Doyles as an excellent vehicle for showcasing Australia’s artistic talent, in a representational style. Representational art is our focus, a style that requires high level technical skill to pull off well and it is also a style that most people can relate to regardless of age and stage.” Sam goes on to say that this does not mean the exhibition is full of traditional ‘drover style’ artworks. There is a huge variety of ways to visualise our landscape, as well as our people and our things. It’s a joy to wander through the exhibition and be surprised by the interpretations. “Of particular note this year are the excellent submissions in the junior categories. It’s encouraging to see organisations like The Doyles inspire and offer opportunity for recognition in our creative youth. I think the future Gold Coast art scene is in good hands and I applaud the art teachers who have supported these students.” Says Sam. The Doyles Art Award is a not for profit organisation, run by volunteers. Entry is free, with the option to donate a coin or two to support the award. Categories include Landscape, Still Life, Figurative, Juniors and All Abilities. The Doyles finalists will be on display at the Firth Park Community Centre, Somerset Drive Mudgeeraba (look for Mudgeeraba Community Centre on Google Maps). The exhibition runs from 3rd July to the 13th of July 2025. Open from 10am-5pm. For further details visit www.thedoylesaward.com.au The Doyles Art Award 2025

4 Welcome to your July Newsletter. This month I am highlighting scams. Scams are everywhere and they appear to be evolving quicker than anyone seems to be able to keep up. It really is important to double check everything, if its sounds too good to be true, it generally is. What is a Scam A scam can be defined many ways, but one is where someone is making money by using illegal methods, generally by tricking someone in to making payments, providing their personal information, bank accounts and credit card numbers, logins to internet banking or online payments systems etc. Or having people pay in to investments that are not real, or being paid into someone else’s name, not the payees name. There are so many scams around. Scams are something that you personally have contributed too, you have authorised the payment to be made, so it is not then classified as Fraud. Current Scam One scam that is around at present is people being contacted from a bank representative that is in fact an imposter. They tell you that someone has used your credit card illegally on an online payment platform eg. Google Pay, Amazon, iPay, Pay Pal etc. They tell you that there has been several transactions, which you know you never made, they create a sense of urgency for you to act. They tell you that the chip on your credit card has been compromised, so they will send a courier out immediately to obtain your credit card to reset your chip. During this phone call or when the courier comes out, and you are anxious and wanting to assist, they have been known to obtain your login and password to the payment platform. They now have your credit card and your online access; they then drain your money. Please know, your chip can not be reset, you also don’t need the chip for any only payments, it is for tap and go or insert payments only, although in the moment you may not think of that. If your chip stopped working, you would need to let your bank know and they would send you a new card, you cannot get it fixed immediately. Please remain vigilant and let your friends and family know. Scam Watch The Australian Government has provided the following website www. scamwatch.gov.au. I encourage you to visit and review the three steps: Stop. Check. Protect. This site talks to ways that scammers make contact with you eg. SMS, phone, social media etc. It highlights some of the major scams eg. Romance scams, investment scams, threat and penalty/extortion etc. It also talks to how to report a scam, which is a very important step for you to take. Don’t sit in silence, report, report, report. 5 Breast screening helps save lives by finding breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. A regular breast screen can help detect very small breast cancers that can’t be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. Screening is most effective for women aged between 50 and 74 years who are encouraged to have a breast screen (screening mammogram) every two years. Nationally, participation in the BreastScreen program is typically lower for First Nations women compared to nonIndigenous women. BreastScreen Queensland (BSQ) is committed to increasing uptake across the state and providing accessible breast screening services that are inclusive, welcoming, and culturally safe. A local Sistas Shawl initiative is helping to encourage more women to participate in screening, particularly those who had never been screened before or were overdue. A Sistas Shawl is a modesty shawl, that can be worn or held during a breast screen, offered to BSQ clients who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander when they attend their appointment at local permanent and mobile clinics. Locally, many First Nations women are taking the opportunity to book in for this important health check. Sistas Shawls boost screening uptake by First Nations women BSQ offers free breast screens for people aged 40 and older who were assigned female at birth, identify or present as female. Services are located at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale, Robina, and Southport. A mobile unit is visiting Eagleby until mid-July and Pimpama in July and August. An appointment can be made by: • Phoning BSQ on 13 20 50 • Visiting breastscreen.qld.gov.au/ make-an-appointment or • Scanning the QR code to book online. In the previous two years, a record number of First Nations women (almost 1000) have attended BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service, many accessing BSQ for the first time. The Sistas Shawl helps women to feel more comfortable and culturally safe during their visit, while providing a sense of connection to community. The initiative is also assisting to boost awareness about breast screening and other local services available. For more information on this initiative visit goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au and search for “Sistas Shawl”. Scan to book a free breast screen today!

6 The hidden advantage to selling your home in winter Real estate folklore says the property market cools as the temperature drops. But is winter really a bad time to sell? Joe Farr from Farr Real Estate says, “The simple answer is no.” Typically in winter, there are not many homes for sale. Just look around your neighbourhood. You won’t see too many sign boards up. Many home sellers think that spring is the best time to sell so they delay putting their home on the market until September. “We still find plenty of buyers in the market in winter, but there's very little for them to choose from. This year, there’s just not enough homes to go around, with historically low stock levels across the Gold Coast. There’s very little land to build new homes at the North end of town, and there aren’t many new apartment projects going up in the local area either. “We’re still seeing a lot of interstate migration even though we’ve had all these interest rate rises. There’s still plenty of buyers out there. It’s a great market for winter sellers!” Joe said. “The Gold Coast is different to the southern states. Spring is good to sell in Melbourne because the winters are so cold. But our mild winters don’t keep the buyers away. Actually it’s quite the opposite. Victorians come up this time of year to escape the cold, and often buy property while they’re here.” So the 'hidden advantage' is this: The supply vs demand equation means that home sellers who are prepared to list their homes in winter will benefit from a lack of competition from neighbouring homes, and strong demand from both local and interstate buyers. “It’s always important to make your home stand out in the crowd,” said Joe. “Whatever the market is doing, homes that are well presented and well marketed will always sell for higher prices and in shorter time frames.” Joe always suggests to his clients to make sure that their homes are spotless and free of clutter. The front yard should have an immaculate appearance. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression!” “And it’s key to get the marketing right. You need to cast the widest net to reach the best buyers. We use a range of media including Local Newsletters, Facebook, Google, realestate.com.au, flyers, virtual tours, videos and our investor database to attract buyers near and far.” If you’re after the best results when selling your Northern Gold Coast home, call Joe Farr and the Farr Real Estate team on (07) 5500 7000 or 0422 400 680. see advert front cover

7 The Importance of Maintaining Your Property's Paintwork: Why Professional Painters Make the Difference Your property's paintwork serves as more than just aesthetic appeal—it's a critical protective barrier that shields your investment from the elements. Regular paint maintenance isn't just about keeping up appearances; it's about preserving your property's value, structural integrity, and long-term durability. The Hidden Costs of Neglected Paintwork When paint begins to crack, peel, or fade, it exposes underlying surfaces to moisture, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. This exposure can lead to wood rot, metal corrosion, and structural damage that costs thousands more to repair than preventive painting would have cost. Water infiltration through compromised paint can cause mold growth, foundation issues, and interior damage that extends far beyond surface-level problems. A well-maintained paint job can last 7-10 years on exterior surfaces and even longer indoors, while neglected surfaces may require complete restoration within just a few years. The Professional Advantage While DIY painting might seem like a cost-effective solution, professional painters bring expertise that delivers superior results and long-term value. Professional painters understand surface preparation, which accounts for 70% of a paint job's success. They know how to properly clean, sand, prime, and repair surfaces before applying paint, ensuring optimal adhesion and longevity. Professionals also have access to commercial-grade materials and equipment that aren't readily available to consumers. They understand which paint formulations work best for different surfaces, climates, and exposure conditions. Their spray equipment and techniques create more even coverage than typical roller applications, while their experience helps them identify and address potential problems before they become costly issues. Making the Smart Investment Maintaining your property's paintwork isn't an expense— it's an investment in your property's future. Professional painting services ensure this investment delivers maximum returns through superior preparation, quality materials, expert application, and lasting results. When you consider the true costs of materials, tools, time, and potential mistakes, professional painting often provides better value than DIY alternatives while delivering results that protect and enhance your property for years to come.
