Our commitment to excellence and strong reputation as the live-in specialists makes us the premier home care company in Australia! Read what our clients are saying about the quality of our care: “Home Care Assistance is the Company we have chosen to help with assistance around the house due to disability and health problems. From first contact with Michelle we found the prompt solving of any problems we had to be such a relief. The company and their staff are caring and efficient providing us with all areas of house maintenance, cleaning, care giving and assistance with the purchase of disability equipment. The company and management are a very hard working professional organisation and I’m sure one of the best on the Gold Coast for quality care of the elderly and people with disabilities. It is comforting to know that Michelle is only a phone call away to be there to assist us.” Julie & Joe Deakin, Coombabah “I have employed Home Care Assistance Gold Coast to provide in home nurse care for my wife Margaret. Margaret sustained a severe fall in November 2016 injuring her shoulder and her back. We have found the two caregivers provided by Home Care Assistance Gold Coast most professional, considerate and helpful at all times in fact going beyond what we envisaged the caregiving role to be. The Director Michelle Lye, is most attentive and helpful at all times I would have no hesitation in recommending Home Care Assistance Gold Coast for similar circumstances.” William M. Gold Coast “I have been with Home Care Assistance Gold Coast since 2015 and I have found the care given is professional and personal. The service provided is over and above the norm and Michelle, the director has made visits to my parents to ensure the standard and quality of care. My previous provider did not offer the personal touch to the service and I am very appreciative of the extra care provided. My parents who required high care is given the priority and Michelle makes sure that the service provided is adaptable/compatible to my parents needs, and I would be happy to answer any further inquiries.” Suane Goh, Gold Coast Home Care Assistance takes a unique approach to the care of older Australians. 4 CITY NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Batteries don’t belong in bins Dead batteries don’t go in your household bin. They can start fires either in your bin or recycling trucks when they are crushed or damaged, and when they end up in landfill they leach toxic materials. It’s estimated that 90 per cent of Australia’s used batteries end up in landfill, and yet nearly all of the materials in batteries can be reused like lithium, cobalt and manganese. But where should they go? B-Cycle has you covered! Just collect your used batteries and drop them off at one of the over 60 locations across the Gold Coast Pop some clear sticky tape over the ends and store them. Try reusing a glass jar for storing them before disposing of them safely. You can also take them to a City Recycle Street facility at your nearest City Waste and Recycling Centre. Find out more, visit https://bcycle.com.au/ For City recycling locations go to cityofgoldcoast.com.au/recycling The 2022-23 City Budget has several key focus areas including safety, transport and sustainability. As Mayor, I am acutely aware of the cost-of-living pressures we all face. These pressures are driven by inflation and are impacting every Australian. The 2022-23 City Budget is my tenth as Mayor and I’m confident it will continue our city’s record of ensuring any rate increases are capped at, or below, CPI (Consumer Price Index). A focus next financial year is on ensuring greater community safety through further investment in CCTV, street lighting and community infrastructure including disability-compliant change rooms and park facilities. Since 2011, we have increased our city CCTV network from 110 fixed cameras to a fleet of more than 700 units today including mobile CCTV and anti-hoon cameras. Safety starts at home and the City and Queensland Police are currently running a camera network trial, known as the Community Camera Alliance (CCA), in Varsity Lakes and Yatala. The trial will provide police with great visual footage, should an incident occur in streets around those two suburbs. The program is confidential and helps keep our streets safe. Access to information greatly assists police and as we all know, visual footage of potential offenders is vital when someone is acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood. I applaud the Queensland Police Service for launching this initiative and we hope more suburbs are included later this year. Details are at: https://bit.ly/3FgFzYN TOM TATE MAYOR The cost of water leaks Leaking toilets, taps and leaking underground pipes can waste a lot of water, leading to high water bills. Leaks can also cause structural damage to your property and even attract termites. We recommend regularly reading your water meter to detect any unusual variation in water usage between readings. Learn more about detecting water leaks and what to do if you find a leak at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/waterleaks

5 COUNCILLOR NEWS Councillor William Owen-Jones Division 2 P 07 5582 8555 E division2@goldcoast.qld.gov.au PO Box 5042 GCMC QLD 9726 @WilliamOwenJonesDivision2GoldCoast W cityofgoldcoast.com.au JUNE 2022 ia O en-Jones i i i i i i l . l . . @WilliamOwenJonesDivision2GoldCoast W cityofgoldcoast.com.au Flexiskip kerbside bags The City has changed the way it manages bulky waste kerbside collections by working with Handel Group to provide an on-demand kerbside collection service. Each eligible Gold Coast household can order one free Flexiskip bag per year. Flexiskip is a heavy duty three cubic metre skip bag with a one tonne capacity. Set up within four metres of the kerb or driveway, fill it and then arrange collection. To check eligibility or arrange delivery go to www. kerbside.handel.group or phone 07 5619 5221 (Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm). Most residents with a wheelie bin collection service are eligible. You are not eligible if you live in: • High-rise or unit complexes with a current bulk bin service • Any complex with 10 or more units • Rural areas that do not have a City waste collection service • Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove resort complexes that are serviced by a private waste contractor. Waste and Recycling centres City waste and recycle centres accept most household items. Please note:- • Hazardous household waste such as bleach, herbicides and pool chlorine can only be accepted at Helensvale and Merrimac WRCs. • Up to 20 litres of paint can be disposed of at Helensvale, Merrimac or Reedy Creek WRCs. • Electronic waste, refrigerators and air conditioners can be disposed of at Helensvale, Merrimac, Molendinar and Reedy Creek WRCs. Car tyres will also be accepted at these centres however there is a charge of $5.60 per tyre (maximum of five). For further information go to cityofgoldcoast.com.au/services/ waste-recycling. Mobile phones can be recycled at all major mobile phone retailers including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Samsung stores, or google Mobile Muster. Helensvale WRC In early 2020 when COVID-19 first appeared the waste recycle centres were temporarily closed. They reopened with access restrictions which saw every second car bay closed. The green waste bins were replaced with general waste bins as part of these arrangements, with residents being directed to the green waste pad at the Coomera depot (196 Old Pacific Highway Pimpama). The City operates its WRCs under an Environmental Authority issued by the Department of Environment and Science. Under COVID restrictions, the Environmental Authority limited the volume of material that could be moved from the Helensvale site. In order to not exceed the permitted limits, an operational decision was made not to return green waste at the Helensvale site. The movement of green waste from WRCs using the large bulk container bins is incredibly inefficient as the material cannot be compacted. The advantage of the green waste pads is that the green waste material can be ground and mulched on-site. I appreciate that not all residents will be happy to learn that green waste will not return to the Helensvale site, however the City recently sought to establish an additional green waste pad at the former Suntown site in Captain Cook Drive Arundel. It is expected that the green pad will be operational in early 2023 following the removal of the GC500 equipment from the site in December 2022. Hopefully the second green waste pad at Arundel will be more convenient for Helensvale and Hope Island residents in particular. If you wish to discuss please call me on 0412 242 622. Community consultation I am a Justice of the Peace (Q) and available to meet with members of the community in my office on the ground floor of the Helensvale Library and Cultural Centre from 9am – 10.30am most Mondays and Fridays. Book a free breast screen today, it could save your life. Women 40 and older can attend. Enjoying life due to routine breast screening Hollywell resident and mother of two, Jennifer Whiteway, is grateful that routine breast screening has meant she can continue enjoying life with the people she cares about. Jennifer was shocked to receive a breast cancer diagnosis a few years ago, at age 67, after needing further tests at BreastScreen Queensland’s Southport clinic following her regular breast screen visit. “I was diagnosed with multiple cancerous tumours ranging in size from 5mm to 19mm. What surprised and scared me the most was how rapidly cancer can develop,” Jennifer said. “The staff, doctors, and specialists at BreastScreen Queensland were very caring, sympathetic, and helpful to support me through my cancer diagnosis.” Jennifer continues to take hormone therapy as part of her ongoing care, following breast surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment. While medical appointments and treatments (and COVID) have meant Jennifer and her husband John haven’t travelled as much as they’d love to, she continues to enjoy time with family and friends, and her other passions like gardening, walking, and boating. Breast screening every two years can help save lives by finding breast cancer early. “I feel that if I hadn’t had my routine breast screen, the consequences could have been very different and I might not be here today to enjoy life,” Jennifer said. Jennifer urges all eligible women to have a breast screen without hesitation when they are due. Anyone, at any age, who notices any new or unusual breast changes should to see their doctor immediately. Women can attend free breast screening with BreastScreen Queensland from age 40, with those aged between 50 and 74 strongly recommended to attend regularly. Services are at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale, Robina, and Southport. A mobile service is also available. To arrange a free breast screen, eligible women can phone 13 20 50 or book online by visiting breastscreen.qld.gov.au Jennifer enjoying the Coombabah Wetlands

9 Our May Neighbourhood Watch meeting at the Oxenford and Coomera Community and Youth Centre (CYC) proved to be a great success. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the bicycle helmet design competition. This has improved awareness among young people of the need for road safety while cycling; we hope to continue with this initiative given the positive response. We also received a most informative presentation from Sergeant Todd who reported that Pimpama Police Station has now opened providing greater mobility of police within the region and leading to much improved policing, better cover, plus a quicker response. We were cautioned that ‘sneak entries’ were on the increase with residents being at home while the burglary was taking place. Always ensure your home, garage and car are secure with keys locked away. Most offenders were juveniles; horrible statistic: 10% of the offenders commit 90% of the crimes. The good news is that prosecutions are becoming more severe. It was regrettable to note that some of the kids come from good homes. Friday and Saturday nights continue to be the most active for crime. Vigilance, surveillance, and informal social control remain the best deterrents; ‘optimistic youths’ seeking to damage or steal from property are likely to seek alternative sites if seen by a neighbour and possibly also photographed. As always, our catchphrase remains ‘Lock it or Lose it’! Sergeant Gordon from Forensics also provided an excellent account of advances in crime detection through analysis of DNA including new methods of collection and detection such as plastic sticky pads which have proved to be useful for lifting DNA from clothes. Cold cases are being re-examined on this basis with criminals being identified especially as more information is being shared inter-state, unknown criminals in Queensland maybe well-known elsewhere – the long arm of the law has stretched a little further! The success of the initiative to encourage volunteers to meet their neighbours and play an active role in the community continues. Just a reminder that building a more active, engaged and involved Neighbourhood Watch integrates into a wider program to make Letterbox Distribution Have your flyers and brochures delivered to the Northern Gold Coast from $35 per 1,000 - 28 Years Experience - Call Deirdre on 5573 1040 or 0412 416 063 www.deirdrehipperson.com deirdreh@bigpond.net.au DELIVERERS ALSO REQUIRED Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch our area safe and secure, you may email: DCPC. GoldCoast@police.qld.gov.au. Interesting to note that during the annual LawWeek (16-23 May) it was announced that, “scams are in the spotlight.” It seems that Queenslanders are particularly vulnerable to this crime. Personal experience suggests that dozens of parcels await my collection if I just visit a (doubtful and never to be opened) site. There are scams offering uninvited offers of help to recover money for an up-front payment as well as online shopping (including classifieds) scams offering dodgy deals. It is particularly unfortunate that scammers are preying on the goodwill of communities trying to provide disaster recovery assistance and funds to charities after the recent flooding events. One worrying statistic is that dating and romance scams resulted in Australians losing over $50 million last year, a significant increase. We are encouraged to seek advice and make an official complaint to the Office of Fair Trading if personally affected by a scam. Keep a note in your diary that our next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be on Tuesday August 9th at 7.00 pm at the CYC, 25 Leo GrahamWay, Oxenford QLD. 4210. As always, there will be much to learn regarding security in our neighbourhood. and we look forward to the support from our local police, council representative, and our Queensland State MP.
