2 No judgement here. If you're moving, downsizing, or just standing in your garage wondering how it came to this - the paddleboards leaning on the golf bags, the golf bags blocking the wine fridge, the wine fridge you can't actually reach - you'll understand why Hope Island needed a Swift Storage. And now we have one. Swift Storage Hope Island is officially open, and it's their biggest facility yet. Easy to access off Broadwater Ave, it's purpose-built to serve the communities of Hope Island, Paradise Point, Sanctuary Cove, Santa Barbara, Oxenford, Coombabah and Hollywell - right in the heart of one of the Gold Coast's most liveable northern suburbs. This is a flagship facility, and it looks the part. Premium finishes, good lighting, even music playing while you move in and out and extra small units starting at $26/week right through to large-format spaces that handle the serious stuff. Simple. Smart. Storage. Security is taken seriously too. CCTV with AI monitoring, gated access, and a fully contactless experience - customers book, access and manage their unit entirely from their phone via an app. No front desk. No paperwork. No queues. Just seamless access whenever it's needed. Swift Storage is designed for the way people actually live - whether that's making space after a life change, housing a passion that's quietly taken over the house, or simply needing room to breathe. Swift looks after it all, no questions asked. Units are filling fast. Scan the QR code for exclusive opening offers. MarblecoteTM is completely seamless (there are no joins). A brand new factory made ‘stone’ or laminated benchtop will have joins sometimes only one or two, often three or four. KITCHEN MAKEOVER MAGIC Introducing MarblecoteTM – Your Durable, Handcrafted Benchtop Solution Does this difference really matter? Well, yes, it does, especially if you want your benchtop to be hygienically superior. A quick question... how many bacteria can fit on a pinhead? Answer... (fun fact) six million. Bacteria includes e-coli, staph, salmonella, Covid and many more. The second most popular place for bacteria to dwell and thrive in the home - after doorknobs - is the kitchen benchtop. And no matter how tight those joins appear to be, to bacteria they are like the Grand Canyon... party central! MarblecoteTM is stain, heat and scratch resistant. Whilst very resilient (finished with three coats acrylic cross-linking polymer), it is not bulletproof. So if someone drops a brick on it (yes, we’ve had that happen!) damage will occur. Unlike other benchtops, damage like that can be repaired in around one hour and the repair won’t be visible. MarblecoteTM is handcrafted so that each benchtop is unique and there’s a three year warranty. Once warranty expires...we also offer a ‘re-fresh’ (light sand plus 2 coats benchtop clear $200) which includes extended warranty for a further three years Cost comparison - the MarblecoteTM System is one quarter to one fifth the cost of a new replacement bench. 5 PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au 50% OFF - Mid Year - SUNGLASSES SALE UP TO excluding Maui Jim, Zeal and Meta range | Instore Stock only A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. It is caused by the hardening of the lens inside the eye, causing a gradual loss of vision. Most cataracts develop as part of the ageing process. Cataracts tend to affect people aged over 65, but the age of onset can vary. Some people aren’t affected until well into their 70s, while some develop cataracts at an earlier age. In fact, by the age of 80 most of us will have some degree of cataract formation. Other risk factors include long-term exposure to sunlight, smoking, diabetes and family history. Clouded, blurred or dim vision are the most common symptoms of cataracts. Many people don’t notice any changes early on, but as the cataracts progress they start to experience vision problems. Often people describe the quality of their vision as like looking through a dirty window. One of the other common signs is a sensitivity to glare, especially on a bright sunny day or when driving at night on artificially lit roads. Frequent years. There’s an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Michael is able to customise lens shapes for rimless and semi rimless frames to suit customers needs. Prescription polarised sunglasses for most sunglass frames are also available. Bulk billed eye testing is available and health fund claiming for most funds can be done on the spot. changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions can also be a sign of cataracts. A change to your spectacle prescription may help to keep cataract symptoms at bay for a time. However, for the best results the removal of cataracts through a surgical procedure is often recommended. The surgical procedure is straightforward and is usually performed under a local anaesthetic. In the absence of any other eye conditions the resulting vision is significantly improved in most cases. There is not much you can do to stop the formation of cataracts. Regular eye examinations with your optometrist, especially for those over the age of 65, can help to identify any changes as early as possible. Paris Miki Optical has been servicing the Helensvale and surrounding community for eyewear needs since 2005. Store Manager Michael has over 32 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for 25 Cataract signs and symptoms
6 The Hidden Chemicals You Can’t Wash Off Most of us wash our fruit and vegetables before eating them. It’s a sensible habit, but washing can only remove what’s on the surface. If a substance has already been absorbed while food is growing, it can’t simply be rinsed away. That’s one reason recent headlines about paraquat have attracted so much attention. Paraquat is one of the world’s most widely used herbicides. While it has been banned or heavily restricted in more than 70 countries, it remains approved for use in Australia under strict regulations. The renewed public discussion has encouraged many Australians to think more carefully about the environmental chemicals we encounter every day. A Dead Platypus. One Water Test. A Bigger Question for the Gold Coast. When a dead platypus was discovered in Ourimbah Creek on the NSW Central Coast earlier this year, it prompted investigators to test the surrounding waterways. The results revealed elevated PFAS levels in parts of the catchment, with some readings exceeding national guideline levels. Investigators believe the contamination may date back decades. Although these findings relate to one location, they raise a much broader question. What contaminants may be present in the catchments and waterways that supply the water flowing into our own homes on the Gold Coast? PFAS, often called “forever chemicals”, are a group of thousands of manmade chemicals used since the 1940s in products such as firefighting foams, non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics. Because they resist heat, oil and water, they break down extremely slowly, allowing them to persist in the environment for decades. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Measures Survey, more than 85% of Australians aged 12 years and over had detectable levels of several common PFAS chemicals in their blood, reflecting decades of environmental exposure. You can’t control everything. You can control your water. Paraquat and PFAS are different substances with different sources. But they highlight the same reality. We can’t control every environmental exposure. We can’t control how every crop is grown. We can’t undo decades of contamination. What we can control is the quality of the water flowing through our homes. Whether you’re renting, renovating or building your forever home, there’s a water filtration solution to suit your lifestyle. From renterfriendly benchtop systems and portable bath and shower filters you can take with you when you move, to undersink and reverse osmosis systems that integrate seamlessly with your existing plumbing, through to complete whole-home filtration, Pure Water Systems offers solutions for every stage of life.
