But as we age, the aches and pains that creep in can threaten our ability to do the things we love. Truth is that, staying active and strong isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity for maintaining independence and enjoying a vibrant life. Here's why: Movement is Medicine: • Improved Bone Density: As we age, our bones naturally lose density, increasing the risk of fractures. Weightbearing exercises, like strength training, help combat this by stimulating bone growth and keeping our skeletons strong. • Enhanced Balance and Coordination: Falls are a major concern for older adults. Regular exercise, including balance and agility training, can significantly improve coordination and reduce the risk of falls. • Increased Energy and Stamina: Feeling tired all the time? Exercise is a natural energy booster. It improves cardiovascular health, which translates to better endurance for everyday activities, allowing you to explore the Gold Coast with renewed vigour. • Mental Wellbeing: Exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress, anxiety, and even depression. It releases endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, and promotes positive mental well-being. Building a Supportive Community: Taking the first step towards a more active lifestyle can be daunting. That's why finding a supportive community is crucial. At Club 40FIED, we understand the unique challenges faced by adults over 40. We offer a holistic approach to strength, movement, and health, focusing on individual needs in a nonjudgmental and encouraging environment. We are passionate about helping you move better, get stronger, and feel confident to embrace all that the Gold Coast offers. Whether you're a seasoned athlete looking to regain your edge or a complete beginner seeking guidance, we're here to support you every step of the way. PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au In the intricate workings of the human body, the eyes are remarkable organs that require a myriad of nutrients to function optimally and stave off diseases. The adage “you are what you eat” holds particularly true when it comes to maintaining eye health. A balanced diet is not just beneficial for your waistline but also for your eyesight. The connection between nutrition and eye health is well-established. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play pivotal roles in maintaining eye health and preventing conditions like cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting the eyes from oxidative stress that can lead to chronic eye diseases. Vitamin C, found abundantly in citrus fruits and vegetables, supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. It’s believed to combat cataract formation and, when combined with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of AMD and visual acuity loss. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, can be sourced from nuts and seeds and contributes to cell protection from free radicals. Zinc, a mineral present in high concentrations in the eyes, plays a crucial role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina, aiding in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Meat, poultry, fish, and legumes are excellent sources of zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. They are natural sunblock for the eyes, filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protecting against oxidative damage. Leafy greens, eggs, and other foods are rich in these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are vital for cell membrane health in the retina and may help prevent AMD. Fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3s. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, exemplifies a dietary pattern that supports eye health. It’s not just about individual nutrients; the synergy of a nutrient-rich diet contributes to overall eye health and function. The significance of nutrition in eye health cannot be overstated. As we age, our eyes are susceptible to various conditions, but a diet rich in specific nutrients can help protect our vision. It’s a simple yet powerful truth: the food we consume can have a profound impact on our eyesight. Schedule Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting potential eye conditions before they manifest symptoms and cause irreversible vision loss or blindness. 6 • 1 cup plain flour (all purpose flour) • ▢1 cup rolled oats • ▢1 cup desiccated coconut, unsweetened • ▢3/4 cup white sugar , preferably caster / superfine • ▢150g unsalted butter • ▢4 tbsp golden syrup • ▢1 tsp baking soda (bicarbonate soda) Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (160°C fan forced). Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Mix flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl. Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium high heat and stir until butter has melted. Add baking soda and stir to combine - it will fizz up, this is normal. Immediately remove from heat. Pour butter mixture into flour and mix until just combined. Roll level 1 tablespoon mixture into balls, flatten into patties. Place balls, 2.5 cm apart, on prepared trays. Bake for 15 minutes or until deep golden. (Bake 12 min for chewy biscuits!) Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool - they harden as they cool! ANZAC BISCUITS Anzac Biscuits are a cherished treat in Australia, adored for their rich buttery caramel taste, satisfying crunch, and the ease of their recipe—not to mention the profound historical significance they hold. These biscuits are traditionally baked by Australians in honor of ANZAC Day. The acronym “ANZAC” refers to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day, observed on April 25th each year, is a solemn day of remembrance for Australians, commemorating the anniversary of the initial significant military engagement undertaken by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War, a battle marked by substantial losses. Legend has it that soldiers’ wives invented the original Anzac Biscuits, carefully choosing ingredients that would ensure the biscuits remained edible over the long journey to their husbands abroad. The original versions were reportedly so tough that soldiers sometimes ground them into porridge. Prep: 15min | Cook: 15mins | Makes 16-18 Congratulations February Winners! $50 GIFT CARD SUDOKU: L. April is National Heartworm Awareness Month FIVE FACTS ABOUT HEARTWORM DISEASE THAT WILL SHOCK YOU ... It’s everywhere! Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in Australian states. They look like spaghetti. Mature heartworms look like long strands of spaghetti. Dogs are more susceptible. Dogs can have hundreds of heartworms in their bodies. We need to act fast. In most cases, the treatment often comes too late to cure the animal fully. Decreased appetite might be a sign. If your cat or dog is not eating well, it might indicate heartworm disease. Heartworm disease, a perilous condition affecting both cats and dogs, is caused by a parasitic worm dwelling in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Its insidious presence can lead to severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to vital organs in these beloved pets. Dogs are a host of heartworms, meaning they can grow and reproduce in the animal, while cats are a dead-end host, meaning the worms cannot reproduce in the animal. Most cats are infected with only a few worms and may not be fully mature, though the disease can be just as deadly for cats as it is for dogs. Transmission of heartworms occurs through mosquitoes, which acquire larvae from the bloodstream of infected dogs during feeding and subsequently transfer them to other animals. Once transmitted, these larvae develop into adult worms, perpetuating the cycle of infection. Preventative measures are paramount, including monthly oral medications that target immature worms. Strict adherence to preventive schedules is crucial, as heartworm larvae can mature rapidly, rendering prevention ineffective within as little as 51 days. Detecting heartworm disease early is pivotal for successful treatment. While dogs may exhibit symptoms such as coughing, fatigue, decreased appetite, and weight loss, many remain asymptomatic initially. Regular blood tests are indispensable for diagnosis, preferably during routine veterinary visits. However, detecting heartworms in cats proves challenging due to the low worm burden and absence of definitive symptoms. Antigen and antibody tests, supplemented by imaging techniques like x-rays and ultrasounds, aid in diagnosis. Treatment for heartworm disease in dogs necessitates a multifaceted approach. Upon confirmation of diagnosis, strict activity restriction is imperative to mitigate further damage to the heart and lungs. Stabilizing the dog’s condition may be requisite, particularly in cases with underlying health issues. Treatment protocols typically involve several steps, followed by post-treatment testing to ensure complete elimination of parasites. Unfortunately, effective treatment options for heartworm-infected cats are lacking, underscoring the critical significance of preventive measures. In conclusion, heartworm disease poses a grave threat to the wellbeing of companion animals, emphasizing the need for proactive prevention, early detection, and appropriate treatment. Consultation with a veterinarian is indispensable to tailor preventive strategies and ensure timely intervention in cases of infection, safeguarding the health and longevity of cherished pets.

Youth crime tops the agenda, how to protect your property and be best prepared should such an unfortunate event arise on your doorstep. If youths approach your property, security lights, dogs barking and angry words from the occupier all act as a deterrent. If the youths enter your property they are trespassing, and you are entitled to defend your home using similar force to that provided by the perps. This should not encourage a vigilante type response. If confronted by youths with knives, the best solution is to comply with requests made; the main objective is to protect human life. If youths are acting aggressively in a public area, avoid confrontation, you might be held liable with the perp claiming to be an innocent party if an attack takes place. If criminal activity is apparent, call the police. Consider the level of risk when restraining the perp until the police arrive, never compromise your personal safety. It is also clear that properties left unattended are more vulnerable. Perps quickly identify target homes. Properties become vulnerable when there are signs that the occupier is in absence; overgrown vegetation in the front yard and an over-stuffed letter box with junk mail represent an open invitation. In our neighbourhood we encourage realtors not to sell properties to foreign buyers who leave the property vacant. Please remember to remain vigilant and spread the word: ‘Lock it or Lose it’ and keep keys hidden. Neighbourhood Watch stickers and signs affixed to doors and windows are a deterrent. We usually hand out these items at our meetings. Alternatively, you can contact us direct, and we will send them to you at no cost. Cybercrime represents a major concern, particularly among our more senior members in retirement. Scammers seek the victim’s trust and have demonstrated considerable success. Be particularly cautious of the ‘too good to be true’ opportunity and however enticing never reveal your PIN or account details. Just a reminder that if you experience a scam, report it to the ACCC via Scamwatch (www.scamwatch.gov. au). While the ‘cash-crunch’ continues, Queenslanders are eligible for a range of benefits. It is worth accessing ‘https://www. queenslandsavers.qld.gov.au/’ to find out if you are eligible. Also, a quick reminder of the QPS portal to identify stolen cars – an excellent initiative in tracking car thieves. If you see a suspicious vehicle, check out ‘www.police.qld.gov.au/stolenvehicles’ to see if there is a match. Our next NHW event will be on the 14th of May 2024 with a 7.00 pm start, location at the Meeting Place (aka the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre), 25 Leo Graham Way, Oxenford QLD. We will welcome our new local Councillor, Naomi Fowler, a resident in our district and someone who has provided us with continued support and advice. We also hope to hear from our community Police Officer, and our State member for Parliament. In response to popular demand, we will close with a raffle and light refreshment. You are assured of a stimulating evening, and we look forward to welcoming you. Martin Mankowski, Area Coordinator Oxenford Neighbourhood Watch
